Intel Galileo Blueprints

Chapter 2. Creating a Weather Measurement and Data Logging Station

In this chapter, you will learn how to create a weather measurement and data logging station. Through this project, we will explore how to use the inputs of the Intel Galileo board to measure data from sensors. We will connect analog and digital sensors to the board. The sensors will measure the temperature, humidity, and ambient light. We will then log these measurements on to the SD card.

Let's dive in!

Hardware and software requirements

Firstly, you need to secure your Intel Galileo board. This will serve as our microcontroller board. Note that we'll use Gen 2 for this project.

We'll only use two sensors—a DHT11 and a photocell. We will need the DHT11 for the temperature and humidity measurements and the photocell for measuring the ambient light level.

Aside from these major components, you will also need a 1N4148 diode, 4.7K and 10K Ohm resistors, breadboard, jumper wires, and, of course, an SD card.

Here is a list of all the components needed for this project:

At this point...

Configuring the hardware

After all the required files are installed, we can start configuring the hardware by following these steps:

  1. Start with the DHT11 sensor, place it on the breadboard.
  2. Connect pin 1 to VCC (5V) on the Galileo board and pin 4 to GND on the Galileo board.
  3. Connect the sensor's pin 2 to both Galileo pin 5 and the diode.
  4. Connect the other end of the diode, and the cathode, to the Galileo board pin 6.
  5. Place one leg of the photocell in series with the 10k Ohm resistor.
  6. The other end of the resistor should be grounded by connecting it to the GND pin or the blue power rail.
  7. Connect the row where the resistor and the photocell meet to the A0 pin of the Galileo board.
  8. Connect the other leg of the photocell to VCC.
  9. Insert the SD card into Galileo's onboard SD card reader on the side of the board.

You can refer to the following schematic as a guide:

Configuring the hardware

Here is a picture of the hardware that was configured:

Configuring the hardware

Testing the sensors

After setting up the hardware, we can now test whether the sensors are working properly. To do so, we need to write a code to test both the digital temperature and humidity (DHT) sensor and the photocell.

Here is the complete code that I used in this project:

// Libraries
#include "DHT_Galileo.h"

// DHT sensor type
#define DHTTYPE DHT11 // DHT 11

// DHT sensor pins
#define DHTIN 5
#define DHTOUT 6

// DHT instance
DHT_Galileodht(DHTIN,DHTOUT, DHTTYPE);

void setup()
{
  // Initialize the Serial port
Serial.begin(115200);

  // Init DHT
dht.begin();
}

void loop()
{
  // Measure from DHT
float temperature = dht.readTemperature();
float humidity = dht.readHumidity();

  // Measure light level
floatsensor_reading = analogRead(A0);
float light = sensor_reading/1024*100;

  // Display temperature
Serial.print("Temperature: ");
Serial.print((int)temperature);
Serial.println(" C");
   // Display humidity
Serial.print("Humidity: ");
Serial...

Logging data onto the SD card

Now that data from the sensors is being displayed on the serial monitor, we will log the results on an SD card. You need the following code to make this work.

You will notice that the following code is similar to the previous code; only a few parts are added. This is the complete code for this recipe:

// Libraries
#include "DHT_Galileo.h"
#include <SD.h>

// DHT sensor type
#define DHTTYPE DHT11 // DHT 11

// DHT sensor pins
#define DHTIN 5
#define DHTOUT 6

// DHT instance
DHT_Galileodht(DHTIN,DHTOUT, DHTTYPE);

void setup()
{
  // Initialize the Serial port
Serial.begin(115200);

  // Init SD card
Serial.print("Initializing SD card...");

if (!SD.begin()) {
Serial.println("Card failed, or not present");
return;
  }
Serial.println("card initialized.");
system("/sbin/fdisk -l > /dev/ttyGS0");

  // Init DHT
dht.begin();

  // Set date and time (only run once!)
  //system("date 171110202014&quot...

Summary

In this chapter, we first built the hardware by connecting the sensors and SD card to the Galileo board. We installed the necessary files and code on the Galileo to make it work as desired. Then, we tested the sensors and displayed the measurements on the serial monitor. We read the data and stored it on the SD card. Lastly, we analyzed and plotted the data in Excel.

To go further with this project, you can add more sensors, such as precipitation and wind speed detectors.

In the next chapter, you will learn how to control the outputs of the Galileo board. We will connect actuators, such as relays and servomotors, to the board and control them via push buttons and potentiometers.
