1- Choose your domain name.
Which web address will web users enter to access your website? The domain name is the address (including .com or .net, for example) that allows internet users to visit your website. We would recommend a short domain name, to avoid any typos.
2- Select the right hosting plan
Several of our web hosting plans are available at a price that is adapted to the performance you need. Each has free options such as a free domain name for the first year,* custom email addresses and a CMS that can be installed in 1 click. For the technical side, other, more expensive offers will bring you more performance, storage space and services.
3- Choose the content management system you want
A content management system (CMS) is the tool that allows you to put your texts and images online and manage them. It will also provide a framework for your layout: each one offers different templates and interfaces. WordPress is the best-known, but we also offer alternatives like Joomla! and Drupal . With PrestaShop, you can build an e-commerce website.

We offer several pre-installed CMSs, which are currently market leaders: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla! and PrestaShop.
Each CMS has its own interface, along with its own advantages and disadvantages. To make your choice, we recommend taking several criteria into account:
- Ease of use: if you’re just getting started, it’s best to start with a simple CMS. There are beginner tutorials available online that can help you get an idea of the interface.
- Customisation: some CMSs are more flexible than others, and will allow you to more easily scale your website to suit your future needs.
- Available features: all the CMSs offered are provided free with your hosting plan. You will find both free and paid templates and tools to install online, that will allow you to activate additional features (e.g. online bookings, a contact form, multilingual web pages).
- Online community: a large online community (such as WordPress) will give you access to many tutorials via expert blogs or forums. If you need help or advice, it’s easy to find an expert to help you.
Please note that not all CMSs are available on all hosting plans. For example, the STARTER offer only offers the WordPress CMS, and PrestaShop is only available with the PERFORMANCE hosting plan.

Secure your web project
To secure your website, there are several options available. The SSL certificate (which enables data encryption) and anti-DDoS protection are both features that are included in all offers. Don’t forget to enable them. Finally, update your software regularly and set up automatic backups.
Add a blog or store with a sub-domain
You can create sub-domains for free with web hosting plans. This allows you to create a professional blog or an online store, for example “mystore.mywebsite.com”, either right away or in the future. Your site can evolve with your ideas and your business!
Create content and update it regularly
Detailed and up-to-date content will keep your website relevant and effective both for your visitors and for search engines. A website with up-to-date information and opening times will therefore improve customer satisfaction and your reputation. What’s more, if it includes text with keywords relating to what your prospective customers are looking for on search engines, it will increase your visibility.

How much does it cost to create a website?
At OVHcloud, we minimise the cost of building and hosting websites by creating and managing our own datacentres ourselves. Our hosting plans are tailor-made to offer you the best service at the fairest price. The additional costs involved in creating and managing a website will then depend on your preferences and how ambitious your project is. The CMSs offered are free of charge. However, if you would like to add a paid template or specific extensions, you will find community-developed options available for sale on specialised websites. To attract traffic to your website, advertising fees may also be an added expense, depending on the provider you have chosen to launch them, or on your traffic acquisition skills.
What is DNSSEC?
DNSSEC is a feature offered with most domain name extensions. It adds a layer of protection to prevent your domain name from being hacked. For example, a hacker could redirect your domain name to another source: this is called cache poisoning. Be aware that not all domain name extensions support DNSSEC.
Do I need to have an SSL certificate for my website?
We strongly recommend applying the SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer) to your website. This secures the data exchanged between the website and internet users by encrypting it. This security (included with our web hosting plans) protects sensitive customer data, such as banking information and passwords. Secure SSL sites are also favoured by search engines.
