When do you use an SSL certificate?
Small business websites
Local small businesses often allow customers to sign up for newsletters or fill in a contact form.
A paid SSL certificate provides a secure connection without the need for in-depth technical knowledge and it prevents warnings of “unsecure sites”, thus reinforcing customers’ trust in the brand.
Online stores (e-commerce)
Online shops process payments and collect information about their customers.
A paid SSL certificate enables encrypted online transactions, protects against phishing attacks and ensures compliance with PCI DSS requirements, providing a secure shopping experience and protecting your customers’ data.
An organisation collecting sensitive data
Organisations handling sensitive data must protect their users’ information with advanced security technologies.
A paid SSL certificate ensures strong encryption, verified identity, and regulatory compliance, protecting data against breaches and reducing the risk of legal liability.
SSL certificate: what are the advantages and how to choose?
Ensure your company’s website and its visitors are kept safe with OVHcloud.
Your brand image is closely linked to the level of security offered by your website. To gain credibility, your website should be accessible via a secure HTTPS connection. This connection is active when a green padlock appears in the browser’s address bar (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) next to the website’s URL. This informs users that the content of the pages they are viewing comes from a secure and non-pirated source, because their data is protected by encryption. Bear in mind that SSL certificates vary for each security level.

First level of security: HTTPS connection
Without an SSL certificate, your website address will not have a secure HTTPS connection. Your visitors could get alerts from their browser, highlighting the lack of security on your pages. Activating a valid SSL certificate will display a padlock in your browser’s address bar. Its presence indicates that the connection is secure by encrypting the data exchanged. This is the first level of security.
DV SSL certificates: The domain has been verified
Premium SSL certificates offer different levels of verification and ensure the confidentiality of the data that passes between the browser and the website. To do this, a certification authority must first validate the website’s SSL certificate. Google's algorithm now includes this parameter in its assessment criteria. The DV SSL certificate by Sectigo guarantees that the domain owner has proven their control over it.

EV SSL certificates: The website publisher has been verified
Only EV SSL certificates can guarantee that the website visited is administered by the company that owns it, and that the company exists legally. This is the highest level of security and guarantee. When you visit web pages secured by an EV SSL certificate, the certificate will display the name of the company in question next to the padlock icon. This allows you to check who is behind a website’s IP address.
Guaranteed security for your customers
Protecting your customers’ data and transactions with encryption is an essential step in reassuring your visitors about the security of your e-commerce platform. By securing exchanges with your web server, you boost your credibility and inspire confidence on each log in.

Boost your SEO
A website that can be accessed in HTTPS not only secures the exchange of information - it also boosts your SEO ranking on search engines such as Google, which alone represents more than 90% of searches in France.
Your free Let’s Encrypt DV SSL certificate is installed by default on all OVHcloud web hosting plans.
Let’s Encrypt is an open-source project supported by multiple companies, including OVHcloud. The certification is recognised by the most popular web browsers.
The advantage for you is that you don’t need any technical skills to configure the certification. The HTTPS protocol is routinely enabled when you create your website and subdomains. With a validity period of 90 days, the Let’s Encrypt DV SSL certificate will be renewed automatically (and free of charge) without you needing to do anything. So you can easily ensure that your website is secure.

Your questions answered
How to obtain a free SSL Certificate
With our web hosting plans, you get a free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate included, which is activated by default. This means your website will immediately get HTTPS.
What is a certificate authority?
It is a trusted entity that authenticates correspondents. It issues certificates describing digital identities and provides the means to verify the validity of the SSL certificates it has provided. Sectigo is one example of a certificate authority.
Are all certificates the same?
Each certificate offers a different level of security. Domain Validation (DV) SSL certificates provide basic security by authenticating the identity of the domain name owner. In comparison, Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates guarantee that the website visited is managed by the publishing company and that the company exists legally, by allowing its name to appear near the “green padlock” icon. You must ensure that this type of security certificate comes from a verified authority.
How are new SSL certificates installed?
You can change the SSL certificate linked to your Web Hosting plan at any time from your OVHcloud Control Panel, so that you can import one you already own, for example. You can also have multiple digital certificates for one or more websites linked to one or more IP addresses. However, be careful when managing your SSL certificates: some are only recognised by certain browsers.
How does an SSL certificate work?
An SSL certificate is a data file. You can use it to encrypt the information exchanged between websites, via a web browser and a server. To do this, SSL certificates use an asymmetric cryptography system based on a public and private key pair.
This encryption is based on a simple principle: two generated keys consisting of a series of randomly generated numbers. The first, called the private key, is kept secret, while the second, called the public key, is publicly accessible. For example, during a transaction on your website, the information entered by a customer is encrypted using the server’s public key. If an attacker tries to intercept this data, it remains protected, as only the server can decrypt it using its private key. Once authentication and validation have been carried out, the data transmitted is protected against hacking.
