This blog brings together key primary passages from sources such as literary texts, philosophical works, and documents, on concepts, ideas, people, gestures, and cultural practices that shaped the pre-modern world in its otherness, as well as those that appeal to our post-modernity. Following Le Goff's concept of the long Middle Ages, the period spans from the 4th to the 18th century, with an emphasis on the formative and central centuries. The global nature of the Middle Ages, rooted in the Western world on Latin as the language of culture and the Church as a shared institution and doctrine, cannot obscure the internal centripetal and centrifugal tensions, nor the interaction with non-Western cultures, especially the encounters with Islamic and Jewish civilizations. The primary sources are presented in their original languages, followed by translations into Spanish and English. The aim is to create a repository for students, teachers, and the general public that contains essential texts for understanding the pre-modern period, its distinctive characteristics, what has remained from the past, and what remains part of our cultural and social heritage. 

En este blog se reúnen fragmentos escogidos textos literarios, filosóficos y artístico que son fuentes primarias claves sobre conceptos, ideas, personas, gestos y prácticas culturales que construyeron el mundo pre-moderno en su alteridad pero también aquellos que apelan a nuestra post-modernidad. Siguiendo el concepto de larga Edad Media formulado por Le Goff, el periodo comprende desde el siglo IV hasta el siglo XVIII con énfasis en las centurias formativas y centrales. La naturaleza Global de la Edad Media, fundada en el mundo occidental sobre el latín como lengua de cultura y la Iglesia como institución y doctrina compartidas, no puede hacer olvidar las tensiones centrípetas y centrífugas internas ni la interacción culturas no occidentales, en especial los encuentros con la civilización islámica y judía.Las fuentes primarias están en la lengua original seguidas de una traducción al español y al inglés. Se pretende así construir un repositorio para estudiantes, profesores y el público en general con textos esenciales para comprender el periodo pre-moderno con sus características distintivas, lo que quedó en el pasado y lo que aún forma parte de nuestro horizonte cultural y social.
