A Week in the Life of Three NYTW 2050 Administrative Fellows

It’s super fun and super busy to work at New York Theatre Workshop as a 2050 Administrative Fellow, so I sat down with two of my fellow fellows to keep track of what each of us do day to day. My name is Marty Chandler (Education & Engagement), and I’m joined by Tyra Mishell (Marketing) and Salwa Meghjee (Artistic Workshop). Any given week at the Workshop is different, since there are always new and different events, programs, or shows happening, so we did our best to give you a sense of most of what we do. (We threw in some of our favorite local recommendations, too!) Read all about it below!

A Knock on the Roof and Enduring Solo Performance at NYTW

Despite the cold weather outside the walls of the Workshop, the room feels warm as I watch Khawla Ibraheem’s performance of A Knock on the Roof. I can feel how the audience around me is moved by Khawla’s performance as Mariam, a mother rehearsing how she and her family can run from the titular evacuation warning. Collectively, we consider the questions she asks of us (or individually, answer aloud when asked directly). Parents in the audience laugh at Mariam’s complaints about her family. All of us feel the weight she carries throughout her story.

A KNOCK ON THE ROOF STUDY GUIDE

Ready to catch a preview or performance of A KNOCK ON THE ROOF at NYTW? We know our students are! Our amazing partner schools from all over New York City will be joining us for our Student Matinee next month. To help the students (and all of us!) get excited about the show, our Education department has published the latest edition of “The Brief” Study Guide. From solo performance to the metric system, the topics covered in the guide will help prepare audiences to understand the weight of Khawla Ibraheem’s character, Mariam, and find commonality in her everyday life, feelings, and obstacles.

From NYTW To Tahrir Square, With Love

When We Live in Cairo came to NYTW, Literary Manager Salma Zohdi knew it would be a specific kind of experience. Not only would she be working in her capacity as an NYTW staff member, she was also the co-dramaturg of a piece that was about her homeland. In this deeply personal essay, Salma reflects on her journey with We Live in Cairo.

A Letter from NYTW

For more than 45 years, we’ve been producing theatre that animates, challenges and celebrates the world we live in. Through this work, we not only build shows, but also community.

While we may be best known for award-winning work—Rent; Merrily We Roll Along; On Sugarland; Hadestown; Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord; Here There Are Blueberries and so many more—they represent a fraction of what we do in our unique home in the East Village.
