Many people approach mattress shopping in the wrong way, by focusing solely on measures of firmness level or sleep position, considering only the price, or choosing materials and technology touted in an ad. But that approach might land you a not-so-comfy mattress that you could regret buying.

The advice in this guide will show you a better way (hint: focus on comfort and support). This guide builds on our hundreds of hours of research and sleep testing to help you find a mattress you’ll happily sleep on for years.

Top pick

This Costco best-seller is made from layers of foam that are as dense (and probably as durable) as those in foam mattresses that cost twice as much. Testers loved its cuddly yet supportive feel, but some found it to be too firm.

The all-latex Zenhaven is $1,000 more than similar online options, but it should prove more durable and breathable (and thus feel cooler) than many foam mattresses. Great latex mattresses are expensive, but we think this one is a good value.

Buying Options

The Saatva, which pairs a classic innerspring bounce with a cushy but understated Euro top, appeals to those who want to nestle in without feeling engulfed. But it doesn’t have the best motion isolation.

The Leesa Hybrid combines the best elements of memory-foam and spring mattresses. It offers better cooling and a thicker cover than the competition, all at a great price.

This foam-and-coil mattress has a supportive and springy feel, good motion isolation, and decent edge support. It appealed to a wider range of testers than most of the other cheap mattresses we tried.

Buying Options

When you’re shopping for a mattress, you can choose from three primary types: foam (memory foam, polyfoam, latex foam, or a combination), innerspring, and hybrid (a mix of foam and springs). We recommend the memory-foam Novaform ComfortGrande, the latex-foam Zenhaven, the innerspring Saatva Classic, the foam-and-coil Leesa Sapira Hybrid, and the budget-friendly Zinus Cooling Comfort Support Hybrid Mattress for their comfort, price, and generous trial periods. But we consider these to be only starting points. Given that comfort is highly subjective—and no single mattress will work for everyone—we also have tips on figuring out which type of mattress you might like best, plus more recommendations in our guides to the best foam mattresses, the best hybrid mattresses, the best innerspring mattresses, and the best cheap mattresses.
