Manchester United’s outstanding transfer debt stood at £300m at the end of the second quarter, the club’s latest financial results have revealed.

The net figure that the Old Trafford club owes in transfer fees is down from £319m at the end of September, although the proportion due within the next year rose to £168m.

A more detailed report of United’s second quarter figures was released on Wednesday evening, disclosing how much the club is currently owed and is due to pay in transfer fees.

The release also revealed the club invested a further £37.7m in the playing squad during the January transfer window.

Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven signed from Lecce and Arsenal respectively, while United also agreed the pre-contract signing of Diego Leon from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno and Amad signed a new five-year contract until 2030.

United’s transfer debt is among the highest in the Premier League. Arsenal’s financial results for the 2023-24 season revealed a net transfer debt of £229.3m, while Tottenham Hotspur recorded £269m in the 2022-23 season. Chelsea do not disclose their figure.

United’s transfer debt is separate from the £731m’s worth of financial debt on the club’s books, the majority of which relates to the Glazer family’s controversial leveraged buy-out in 2005. Combined, the figures total more than £1billion.

United have recorded losses totalling £373m over the last five years, which has led Sir Jim Ratcliffe to embark upon a range of cost-cutting measures since taking control of operations at Old Trafford last year.

Last week, The Athletic reported United plan to make more than 100 redundancies, having already cut 250 jobs as part of a restructuring last summer.
