Shadow IT refers to any cloud application, SaaS platform, or AI tool used by employees without explicit IT approval. It has become critically difficult to control because employees use an average of over 1,000 cloud apps, yet less than 2% are managed by IT. This sprawl creates massive security blind spots where corporate code, financial data, and intellectual property are continuously uploaded to unvetted third-party databases.
Shadow AI is the use of unapproved GenAI tools, personal LLM accounts, or autonomous AI agents at work. Netskope Threat Labs reports that 60% of enterprise AI usage is shadow AI, often fueled by employees logging into tools like ChatGPT or Gemini with personal credentials.
