NCIMB is governed by a board of directors with a wealth of industry experience and microbiology knowledge.

Martin Gouldstone

Martin joined the NCIMB board as Chairman in November 2025, and brings a wealth of commercial and leadership expertise from drug discovery and contract research. His previous board and advisory roles include non-exec director for hVIVO, an AIM listed viral challenge services business; chair for ValiRx, an AIM listed Biotech company; and advisor to Alden Scientific post the acquisition of Oncimmune GmbH.

Prof Andy Porter

Andy Porter joined the NCIMB board in 2023 and has a wealth of experience within both industry and academia. He co-founded Haptogen Ltd (sold to Wyeth/Pfizer Inc) , was one of the founders of the drug discovery company Elasmogen, and also holds Non-Executive (inc Chair) positions in the Scottish life science businesses: Roslin Technologies Ltd and MicroPlate Dx Ltd. He is part-time Professor of Medical Biotechnology at the University of Aberdeen and Director of the Scottish Biologics Centre.

Prof James Prosser

James Prosser is Emeritus Professor in Environmental Microbiology at the University of Aberdeen. Before taking up a lectureship in Aberdeen, Jim carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Liverpool, where he also gained his PhD.  His research focuses on the ecophysiology, diversity and ecosystem function of soil microorganisms. Jim is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Society of Biology and the American Academy of Microbiology. He was awarded an OBE for services to Environmental Science.

Andrew Bruce

Andrew joined NCIMB as Company Secretary in June 2025.  He has extensive experience of providing support and guidance to SME boards, across a broad variety of sectors. Prior to becoming a ‘fractional’ company secretary, Andrew was Head of Portfolio for KPMG-Acceleris, a VC advisory firm. Andrew qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG.  He has a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of York and an MBA from the University of Bradford.
