Report: Shelby Miller agrees to two-year, $2.5 million contract with Chicago Cubs

Miller played for Arizona and Milwaukee last year, going 4-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 10 saves in 48 appearances. He was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Brewers on July 31.

The 26-year-old infielder was claimed off of waivers from the White Sox in mid-January, but he’ll get removed from the Cubs’ 40-man roster following the addition of Shelby Miller on Sunday. There’s a decent chance he slides through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as extra infield depth for the Cubs.

The deal also includes a club option for the 2028 season. Miller is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. To clear a spot on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, Ben Cowles was designated for assignment.

Robert Murray reports that the Cubs are nearing a multi-year deal with reliever Shelby Miller.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports that the deal is a two-year, $2.5 million contract. Miller will likely be out for most, if not all, of 2026 following Tommy John surgery in October of last year. However, he was really impactful as a reliever last season, pitching to a 2.74 ERA in 46 innings for the Diamondbacks and Brewers. The multi-year deal would allow him to rehab with the Cubs this season and then be a factor in their bullpen in 2027.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Daniel Palencia would have closing duties if the season started today.

It’s notable because Counsell has normally given a boilerplate answer about having “an outs-getter” or something along those lines. Palencia looks like a good bet for 30 or more saves if he can stay healthy this season, and the fact that there’s no committee that we know of entering Spring Training is great news for his fantasy stock.

Cubs signed RHP Kyle Wright to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Wright, a 20-game winner for the Braves in 2022, hasn’t pitched in the majors since undergoing shoulder surgery in 2023. He made eight starts in the minors for the Royals last season, finishing with a 5.48 ERA and a 21/14 K/BB in 23 innings. His fastball was down about 2.5 mph from his 94.7-mph average in 2022.

The 29-year-old is a .238/.287/.342 hitter with 15 homers and a 21.3 percent strikeout rate in 1,032 MLB plate appearances, but he can play a few positions around the infield and has been a solid minor league hitter over his career. He could provide infield depth at a few spots if he wins a minor league job.

Velasquez hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since the 2023 season. He made 18 starts at Triple-A Columbus for the Guardians in 2025 before moving to the Korea Baseball Organization where he struggled to an 8.23 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and a 28/18 K/BB ratio across 35 frames. He’s nothing more than extra rotation depth for the Cubs and can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Cubs signed INF Karson Simas to a minor league contract.

The 24-year-old infielder spent the first seven years of his minor league career in the Red Sox’ organization. In 2025, he slashed .244/.313/.331 with four homers, 30 RBI, 17 stolen bases and an 85/26 K/BB ratio over 317 plate appearances across three minor league levels. He’ll add infield depth in the upper minors for the Cubs.

Cubs signed RHP Gabe Klobosits to a minor league contract.

The 30-year-old hurler hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since making 11 appearances out of the Nationals’ bullpen during the 2021 season. He pitched in the independent Atlantic League and American Association in 2025, compiling a 2.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 42/15 K/BB ratio over 34 2/3 innings of work.

Cubs signed LHP Charlie Barnes to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Barnes returned to major league baseball in 2025 after pitching in Korea for four seasons. He registered a 3.58 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 516/166 K/BB ratio in 553 innings in four seasons in the KBO. He signed with the Reds in August of 2025 and compiled a 7.13 ERA and 27/5 K/BB ratio in 24 innings at Triple-A. He will operate as organizational depth for the Cubs.
