Inclement Weather Protocols

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) remains appreciative of the efforts of our institutions and visiting teams to support upcoming visits.

We remind you of inclement weather protocols and assist you should any weather events impact your ability to conduct the required on-site visit or otherwise impact the travel of peer evaluators, institutional representatives, or Commission staff.

The priority is always the safety of everyone involved. No one should ever risk their safety. Commission policy and procedures account for delays due to emergencies, and major weather events fall into that category. Staff will work with institutional leaders and team chairs to help determine the next steps should an on-site visit need to be reconsidered. As a reminder, the Commission’s assigned Vice President liaison to the institution would work with institutional representatives and team members. Please remember that any decision to reconsider the on-site visit must be made in collaboration with the Commission staff.

In accordance with the Commission’s Travel Policy and Procedures, the options to consider include:

  • Adjusting the visit schedule or the participation of individuals in meetings and interviews in light of travel conditions, institutional decisions about attendance, and other considerations;
  • During the visit, supplementing the on-campus, in-person, interactions with remote interactions via video and virtual meeting; and/or
  • After the visit, supplementing the team’s work on campus with remote interactions via video and virtual meeting.

Even if a weather event does not have a direct impact on your arrival to an on-site visit or the visit itself, team members may be concerned about their ability to return home safely and on schedule. As a result, the institution may be called upon to provide extended accommodations and additional services and support for affected team members. Team members should retain receipts for any expenses associated with the visit to ensure reimbursement in accordance with Commission policy and procedures.

If you are facing a weather event likely to impact your visit, please contact the institution’s assigned Vice President liaison.

The Commission is grateful for your leadership and contributions to the work of accreditation. We remain available to support you in the peer review process and in the extraordinary situations that sometimes arise during that process.
