Google Is Back
We have long offered Google searching of AAC, but then a couple of years ago Google started returning a bunch of links to information other than ours, which confused the hell out of people (justifiably), so we added a different program to search the site.
It kinda worked, but nowhere near as well as Google, so we also offered Google as “Advanced Search”.
No sooner had we got all that done, (about a year ago) at the cost of no little time and money, and Google stopped returning links to non-AAC results, so we have now reverted to Google as our our primary, and only, search option.
Search on Comments Works
The other cool thing is that, unlike the previous primary search, Google indexes the comments, so you can search on them. For example, “Klem torque” (without the inverted commas) not only returns Erik’s excellent articles on understanding torque, but also his comments on the subject on other articles.
That said, when you click on a link to a comment, it does not take you to the comment, but rather to the start of the article, but that’s easy to deal with by just using your browser’s search function on, in this example, “Klem”.
Nothing is Perfect
Of course, like with cruising boats, every good thing we add or change has downsides.
In this case we lost searching individual Online Books, and the titles on the Topics page.
However, very few of you were using those features so we think this is a worthwhile trade-off, particularly since the custom search program added a ton of code to the site, which is always a negative—kinda like junking up an offshore boat with too much gear.
