Apple Begins Selling Refurbished 2022 iPad Pro and iPad Air Models

Apple today began selling certified refurbished 2022 iPad Pro and iPad Air models through its online store in the U.S. for the first time.

iPad Pro M2
The fourth-generation 11-inch iPad Pro with the M2 chip, sixth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the M2 chip, and fifth-generation iPad Air with the M1 chip are each available in a variety of storage capacities and color options. The refurbished models are discounted by between 15% and 20% compared to the original pricing of these iPads.

Apple first introduced this particular iPad Air model in March 2022, and the iPad Pro models followed in October of that year.

Apple says its refurbished iPads include a new battery and outer shell, a new white box, and all manuals and accessories, including a USB-C charging cable and power adapter. Apple says it puts refurbished devices through a "thorough cleaning process and inspection," and it performs full functionality testing to ensure there are no defective units.

All refurbished iPads are covered by Apple's one-year limited warranty and 14-day return policy, and eligible for AppleCare+ coverage.

While some savings can be had here, these are obviously two-year-old iPad models with fewer remaining years of iPadOS support.

The prices Apple is asking for these refurbed iPads are quite simply too high.

I hoped that a $2 trillion company would be more generous.

A $200+ discount on a product that is literally as good as new (which Apple refurbished is) is too high?

I mean the prices are already too high when they were new, but that's a different argument.

Yeah that's such a weird statement. Since moving to M-series chips, there is no end in sight for support. These iPads will all be getting updates long past their useful lifespan.
I mean, when Best Buy is selling the M2 11" Pro BRAND NEW in 256GB and 512GB sizes for $699 and $799 respectively, while Apple is selling same REFURBISHED for $719 and $889 respectively, that's insultingly high. And it's not just BBY either, as Amazon and BH Photo among others routinely beat Apple's refurb prices with new old stock on Macbooks as well. Apple Refurb used to be a great deal, but at some point Tim Tim caught on and started jacking up the prices while limiting stock. In the last 6 years I've not found anything in the refurb store I couldn't find cheaper brand new from a major retailer with a quick google search or a couple minutes on Slick Deals.

“While some savings can be had here, these are obviously two-year-old iPad models with fewer remaining years of iPadOS support.”

The 2018 iPad pro is still getting updates, and it’s CPU is behind the M1, let alone the M2 in these.

Of course an older model will get fewer updates, but eh.

So the same M2 Ipad Pros Best Buy is still trying to unload from their inventories. These may be brand new from Apple who held onto them.

The only benefit to getting these from Apple, is that Apple normally has higher trade in values on their products compared to Best Buy.
At the moment Best Buy is offering bonus cash on trade ins when used to purchase new Apple devices.
Even without that, BBY is still beating Apple.
For example, Series 8 Stainless Steel 41mm Graphite.
Apple: $135
BBY: $150 + $15 more if you're a Reward Plus member.

I've tried this with M2 MBA's, 11" iPad Pros, iPhone 14's and a couple other Apple products and BBY consistently beats Apple on trade in prices, and again that's not even including the bonus offers with membership and when purchasing new Apple devices. Yes those offers do stack as well.
This will be my last post on the topic, but point I'm trying to make here is Apple's Refurb store is a ripoff at this point and consumers can find much, much better prices on brand new devices from other retailers with minimal effort.
