Man to Attempt First South Pole Winter Crossing

A seasoned polar explorer has unveiled plans to conduct the first South Pole ski crossing during Antarctica's winter season, a brutal time of 24-hour darkness and deadly cold.

Briton Ranulph Fiennes, a 68-year-old veteran of many extreme missions to some of Earth's harshest environments, said the journey will begin in March 2013, just as winter descends on Antarctica.
