She was born in Gary, Indiana, living in a lower class home with several brothers and sisters. She lived at home with her sisters, while her brothers, and father lived an extravagant life in Los Angeles. After auditioning, she made her television debut as Penny Gordon on the show "Good Times", which showcased her acting abilities early on. She also made a few memorable appearances on the hit show "Diff'rent Strokes" as Charlene. Soon afterwards came her role on "Fame".

She then married boyfriend James DeBarge, and divorced several months later. She later signed with A&M Records and recorded her first solo album titled "Janet Jackson". It did poorly on the charts. Two years later she recorded "Dream Street", which was only a moderate success. A year later she collaborated with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to record a third album, "Control". It was a massive hit, selling 5 million copies in the U.S. alone and spawning six hits, including the number one "When I Think of You".

She then recorded "Rhythm Nation 1814". It sold 9 million copies in the U.S. - a bigger hit than "Control"! She began relations with a dancer named René Elizondo, Jr. and secretly married him in March of 1991. That same year she received a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame! Janet went to record her fifth album, titled "janet.". It was her biggest hit to date, selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. and over 20 million worldwide. It includes her biggest hit single to date, "That's the Way Love Goes". Two years later she released a Greatest Hits album, "Design of a Decade", which included two new hits, "Runaway" and "Twenty-Foreplay". Her seventh album, "The Velvet Rope", dealt with darker themes regarding her depression, and clarified her pop culture status as a music icon.

In the midst of promoting "The Velvet Rope", she divorced Rene Elizondo, which exposed their private marriage to the public. Janet then recorded her eighth album "All For You". Another hit. She was honored by MTV as their first MTV Icon. In 2004, she caused massive controversy when her breast was accidentally exposed by Justin Timberlake at the Superbowl Halftime Show, becoming the most searched person and image in internet history. The event changed censorship and caused Janet to be blacklisted by many major radio companies and music channels involved with the broadcast who were heavily fined by the FCC. Janet then released her next album "Damita Jo", and despite the controversy, it was another hit, going multiplatinum worldwide.
