🎓 Meet Tong Liu — PhD student, Health Economist, and one of the sharpest minds in our department. Tong studies how health policies and new medical information shape the decisions of patients and physicians — including the unintended consequences that ripple out when policy changes affect behaviour in unexpected ways. She is a 2025 SSHRC Doctoral Fellow, a 2025 Gaisford Prize winner for Best 2nd-Year Paper, and an Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholar. Her advice to aspiring PhD students? 💡 "Start simple and build complexity gradually. A clean, well-identified question is far more valuable than an ambitious one with weak empirical grounding." Students like Tong are why we do what we do. This week is UCalgary Giving Day (April 9–23) — and gifts to the Department of Economics Impact Fund are matched dollar for dollar. Your support helps us attract and retain exceptional graduate students.
