The Open Source Operating System Platform for Connecting Devices Big and Small

About us

Oniro is an Eclipse Foundation Project dedicated to the development of an open source vendor-neutral Operating System (OS) platform. The Oniro Project was established through a collaboration between two global open source foundations: The Eclipse Foundation and The OpenAtom Foundation. Leveraging the solid foundation of OpenHarmony, an open source project operated by the OpenAtom Foundation, Oniro builds upon an operating system platform known for its versatility across a wide range of smart devices. At its core, Oniro prioritizes seamless interoperability, modularization, and a visually appealing user interface. These priorities are realized through an array of enhancements, encompassing application frameworks like React Native, system-level OS components such as Servo Web Engine, and a comprehensive toolchain that ensures intellectual property compliance and licensing. This adaptable platform provides robust support for a broad range of global technologies and applications spanning various industries, including Consumer Electronics, Home Appliances, Industrial IoT devices, Smart Home, and Multimedia.

I had the great pleasure of being interviewed by the organizers of Open Source Experience in Paris. It gave me the opportunity to introduce the role I play within Huawei Open Source and some of my thoughts and wishes for 2026. I hope 2026 can bring many more contributors to the Oniro project, enhancing it with new innovative features, having fun while doing it. Of course I would also love to see more manufacturers come in and build off this strong #oniro #openharmony foundation to produce fantastic new products for everyone!.

We’re happy to have helped bring React Native support to HarmonyOS NEXT. ⚛️ Together with Huawei, we’ve worked on React Native OpenHarmony (RNOH), contributing to its core implementation. We’ve also helped port key libraries so that React Native apps can run smoothly on OpenHarmony devices. 🚀 📖 Check out the full article to learn more about our journey of bringing React Native to HarmonyOS NEXT: https://lnkd.in/dE3Zr8ek

As 2025 comes to an end, it is the right time to look back at how the Oniro WG has evolved. If the first half of the year was about exploration and setting up our tools, the second half has been about putting those tools to the test. We started the year with a clear mission: to be the transparent, European-governed bridge to the global #OpenHarmony ecosystem. Today, we close the year with a stronger sense of direction and an evolving technical foundation. We are building something ambitious, and while the road ahead is challenging, we are well on our way. 📝 Read the full 2025 year-end review here https://hubs.la/Q03YTL200 Here is the story of our 2025: 🏗️ Technical progress: validation & growth. We moved from planning to active development, prioritising continuous alignment. 🔹 Hardware challenges: we tackled the complex engineering work of integrating Oniro into the Volla Phone X23, aiming to prove Oniro on consumer hardware. 🔹 Continuous alignment: we updated our work to align with OpenHarmony 6.0 (API 20), ensuring we evolve alongside the global platform. 🔹 New horizons: we began exploring Rust & Tauri for secure, hybrid apps and launched the Oniro Tutorial Series to guide developers from "Zero-to-Hero." 🌍 A year on the road: connecting the ecosystem in H2, from Florence to Paris, we engaged with diverse audiences to refine our strategy: ⚜️ OpenHarmony Technical Conference: a pivotal moment positioning Oniro as the "Global Gateway" and showcasing React Native integration. 🇪🇸 Huawei Connect: industrial discussions on Edge/IoT and the need for a vendor-neutral OS. 🇮🇹 SFSCON: focusing on facing device fragmentation, CRA readiness, license compatibility, and our first on-site Steering Committee meeting. 🇩🇪 hackaTUM: a magnificent validation where students built life-saving CPR apps on Oniro in just 24 hours. 🇫🇷 OSXP: concluding the year with discussions on Digital Sovereignty and strategic independence. 🚀 The path forward: 2026 priorities. With the lessons learned, next year is about focus and formalisation: 🔹 Releasing Specification v1.0 for a formal Compatibility Program. 🔹 Establishing Oniro as a reference implementation for CRA compliance. 🔹 Deepening collaboration with OpenHarmony and exploring AI Agent integration. 🔹 Refreshing our website and expanding the ecosystem in specific domains. 👥 A community effort. This year’s success would not have been possible without the dedication of our members and friends. A sincere thank you to everyone who represented Oniro on stages across the world this year: Jarosław Marek, Ph.D., Adrian O'Sullivan, Francesco Pham, Carlo Piana, Alberto Pianon, Luca Miotto, Daniel Thompson-Yvetot, Jasper Morgan, Przemysław Sosna, Kaj Grönholm, Marko Saukko, Dr. Liu Yang, Juan Rico, Pawel Mandes, Robert Radzki, Chen Song, and Ignacio Ahedo. The bridge is being built, brick by brick 🧱 Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year from the Oniro Team!

  • 🌍 Our 2025 event calendar concluded at the Open Source Experience in Paris. It was encouraging to see a number of booth visitors already familiar with the Oniro and OpenHarmony efforts. This provided a great opportunity to increase awareness of the Oniro project within the French open source community, confirming our project's growing footprint within the broader European open-source ecosystem. 💡 As one of the premier European events focused on open source and digital transformation in the enterprise, OSXP is fertile ground for strategic discussions. The environment facilitated interesting dialogues and perspectives on themes like digital sovereignty, IT transformation, and emerging embedded technologies. These conversations were invaluable for gathering diverse angles and reinforcing the importance of the Oniro Working Group’s mission in these key areas. 🛠️ We strategically used our time to gather actionable inputs during insightful sessions as well as dedicated talks at the booth, which will serve to refine our technical and community strategy, ensuring we transition into 2026 with a clear and focused direction. 🏎️ Congratulations to the lucky winners of our two-day raffle: Tassos Koutlas and Eloise Augier! Thank you for visiting our booth, and enjoy building your new Lego Formula 1 cars! 🥂 To successfully mark the conclusion of our event year, the Oniro team present at OSXP gathered for a toast, celebrating the year's achievements. We extend our deepest appreciation and wishes for a Happy Christmas to every contributor to the Oniro project, and we look forward to collaborating with everyone at many more open source events next year.
