The Data Ethics Club write-up for the '‘Alphafold: The Most Useful Thing AI Has Ever Done' is now available! Proteins are fundamental building blocks of living organisms, performing a vast array of functions from catalysing metabolic reactions to providing structure to cells. The way a protein is coiled or folded is directly tied to its function, so understanding the structure of the protein relays information about how the protein works, what other molecules it interacts with, and how mutations may cause diseases. This information can be applied to drug design and discovery, or to break down environmentally harmful substances such as methane and plastic. Over six decades, scientists working on protein folding had discovered about 150,000 protein structures. AlphaFold took the field by storm, unveiling over 200 million protein structures – nearly all proteins known to exist in nature. Comprising data scientists and research software engineers, the team is a pool of experts that can be deployed into research projects, to provide in-depth technical support in data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and research software engineering. The role holder will work with researchers on projects and provide advice and support to the multidisciplinary research community at the University of Bristol. They will liaise with researchers to collaboratively design and deliver solutions to data science, AI and software engineering challenges using a combination of practical and professional knowledge (such as statistical modelling, AI or sustainable software development). They will also facilitate knowledge exchange by leading and participating in a range of events, including training, networking and outreach activities. Last week JGI Data Scientist, Dr Huw Day attended the Digital Footprints Conference - Leeds. The conference was all about the vast potential of novel digital data for public good. Dr Anya Skatova who leads the Digital Footprints Lab, University of Bristol contributed multiple talks and posters to the conference. She gave the opening remarks on the history of her involvement with digital footprints data research and talked about the type of work her lab got up to. The majority of the lab’s current research is focused on the novel linkage of supermarket loyalty card data with various health surveys, allowing them to investigate the insight and predictive power of our shopping trolley content for health-related outcomes. Dr Laura Fryer and Dr Neo Poon led a session talking about data donation and having members of the public voluntarily give their data. To facilitate this, Laura led a JGI funded Seedcorn project, with support from Huw, on building a visualisation tool to allow members of the general public to look at their own loyalty card data. They built a version of the app on the Streamlit package in Python, which allows users to dynamically load in their usually uninterpretable Tesco clubcard data (which Tesco gives to you in a .JSON file format). They received app insight and feedback from members of the public at We The Curious science centre in Bristol as well as at user design workshops in Bristol. Laura and Neo presented the app in a live demo to the audience and got feedback from the participants. This sparked a lively discussion about the potential data insights from the visualisation app and opportunities in public outreach and communication. Additionally, University of Bristol's current MRes and incoming PhD student Madeleine Jones presented a poster on her masters research on data from the Mood Music project a previously JGI-funded Seedcorn project from 2020, led by Dr Nina Di Cara. The project involves linking ecological momentary assessment data with Spotify streaming history in pursuit of insight into mental health that can be inferred from their music listening habits. Maddie’s work has been on data processing and analysis, using dimensionality reduction methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA), to extract important features from the Spotify data which is otherwise very messy and highly dimensional.
