Russia attacked not only Ukraine but also Poland in a combined overnight aerial assault, Ukrainian and Polish officials reported.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 10, Russia launched waves of strike drones from multiple axes, moving from the east and south toward Ukraine’s western regions.

At around 1 a.m. (2200 UTC), Ukrainian monitors reported that Shahed drones crossed the border into Poland, breaching NATO airspace.

By 6 a.m. (0300 UTC), the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed additional groups of cruise missiles entering Ukrainian airspace from both north and south, also flying westward.

Explosions were heard during the attack in Kyiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Zhytomyr, Kalush, and Vinnytsia regions.

Vinnytsia region: Civilian industrial facilities were hit, though no casualties were initially reported.

Zhytomyr region: Drones and missiles struck civilian enterprises and homes, leaving one person dead and another injured.

Cherkasy region: Air defenses shot down two missiles and around ten drones, though blast damage to homes, power lines, and livestock was reported.

Poland under attack

The Polish Armed Forces confirmed detecting enemy drones over their territory. Alert status fighters were scrambled, air defenses were activated, and radar systems were used to vector Polish and allied warplanes to engage the Kremlin UAV threats.

Poland temporarily closed at least four airports, including Rzeszów, Lublin, Warsaw, and Modlin, along with the associated airspace. The Podlaskie, Masovian, and Lublin voivodeships were reported to be at greatest risk.

Lavrov Demands Russian Language Rights as Core Condition for Peace

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the full restoration of rights to Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine remains a non-negotiable condition for any long-term settlement of the war. Speaking on Saturday during a video address marking Russian Language Day, Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s long-standing accusations of systematic language discrimination and “Russophobia” by Kyiv – claims that served as primary justifications for the 2022 full-scale invasion.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Polish forces had engaged targets. President Karol Nawrocki announced an emergency security briefing, stating that “the security of our homeland is the highest priority.”

A Ukrainian monitoring channel linked to a government official Nikolaevsky Vanek noted that more than 10 drones crossed into Poland and did not return - an unprecedented occurrence.

“I’m sure the Poles will report fewer drones. I wouldn’t expect any strong reaction,” the channel added.

Meanwhile, a silence from the White House followed news that, for the first time, a NATO ally had engaged and shot down Kremlin military weaponry, marking a new and potentially dangerous phase of Putin’s Russo-Ukrainian war on Europe’s eastern flank.

While Poland confirmed it had scrambled its own and allied air defenses to destroy Russian drones that crossed its airspace, President Donald Trump, when pressed by reporters Tuesday night, gave no response.
