{"id":670,"date":"2007-10-22T00:11:11","date_gmt":"2007-10-22T00:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joelonsoftware.com\/?p=670"},"modified":"2007-10-22T00:11:11","modified_gmt":"2007-10-22T00:11:11","slug":"introducing-fogbugz-60","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joelonsoftware.com\/2007\/10\/22\/introducing-fogbugz-60\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing FogBugz 6.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At some point, while I was running around the country giving demos of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogbugz.com\/\">FogBugz 6.0<\/a>, the development team officially got it out the door, and I don&#8217;t think I ever officially announced, &#8220;FogBugz 6.0 is now shipping,&#8221; so, here it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcreek.com\/FogBugz\"><\/a>is:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogbugz.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"MARGIN-LEFT: 5px\" height=\"87\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.joelonsoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/22fb6logo.png?resize=200%2C87&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"200\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"FONT-SIZE: 120%\">FogBugz 6.0 is now shipping!<\/p>\n<p>It has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcreek.com\/FogBugz\/docs\/60\/topics\/basics\/Whatsnewinversion6.0.html\">ton<\/a> of major new features: an integrated Wiki, an API, a completely overhauled search engine, and lots of Ajax to make things really snappy.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the most interesting part of 6.0 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogcreek.com\/FogBugz\/learnmore.html?section=PredictShipDates\">Evidence-Based Scheduling<\/a>, which uses a statistical technique called bootstrapping (a variation on Monte Carlo) to determine the probability that you&#8217;ll ship on any given date. EBS is interesting enough that I&#8217;ll devote a whole article to explaining it as soon as I get a minute of free time. Briefly, with EBS, you estimate features as usual. But then, instead of adding up everyone&#8217;s estimates\u2014instead of taking them on faith\u2014FogBugz does a Monte Carlo simulation looking at what speeds developers worked at in the past, vis-\u00e0-vis their estimates. You use that same distribution of probabilities that you had in the past and run a simulation of 60 futures each of which will occur with equal probability. What you get, instead of a date, is a probability distribution curve that shows the probability that the product will ship on such-and-such a date:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.joelonsoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/10\/22ebs.png?w=730&#038;ssl=1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The introductory price is a terrific deal, and it&#8217;s only good until November 1st.
