As you would expect things have moved quickly and we now have some alpha and development builds supporting Java 9 and Java EE 8. These are \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Payara 5 \u2013 For payaradomain<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openliberty.io\">Open Liberty<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adam Bein posted a video <a href=\"http:\/\/adambien.blog\/roller\/abien\/entry\/java_ee_8_on_java\">Java EE 8 on Java 9<\/a> on how to deploy a Java 9 application on Open Liberty using netbeans. Its a great video and worth a look.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to use the same approach as Adam to deploy a JSF Application on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eclipse.org\/downloads\/packages\/release\/Oxygen\/1A\">Eclipse Oxygen<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This post deals with installation and the first part of the project installing the core application, the next post will expand on this by building a JSF 2.3 application<\/p>\n<h2>Installation<\/h2>\n<h2>Java 9<\/h2>\n<p>Ensure you are running Java 9 on both classpath and JAVA_HOME, and also ensure you have <a href=\"https:\/\/maven.apache.org\/\">maven<\/a>\u00a0installed<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_71471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71471\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-19_57_25-Select-C__Windows_System32_cmd.exe_.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71471 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-19_57_25-Select-C__Windows_System32_cmd.exe_.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">dos prompt<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h2>Open Liberty<\/h2>\n<p>Open Liberty came from IBM open sourcing WebSphere Liberty, and is a fully compliant Java EE 7 server. They also have an early release <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.ibm.com\/wasdev\/blog\/2017\/11\/24\/java-ee-8-implementation-november-liberty-beta\/\">Java EE 8 server<\/a>, which is getting improved all the time in their development builds. We will use a development build for this project, which can be downloaded from \u2013<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_71472\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71472\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/screenshot-openliberty.io-2017-12-11-10-54-23.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71472 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/screenshot-openliberty.io-2017-12-11-10-54-23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Open Liberty Development Download<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h2>Eclipse<\/h2>\n<p>Eclipse Oxygen also has Java 9 release available at <a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.eclipse.org\/content\/java-9-support-beta-oxygen\">download<\/a> \u2013 I am using the Java EE version of the eclipse<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_71473\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71473\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/screenshot-www.eclipse.org-2017-12-11-10-56-16.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71473 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/screenshot-www.eclipse.org-2017-12-11-10-56-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eclipse Download<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>Work through the installation instructions. wrap-lines:false\">mvn archetype:generate -DinteractiveMode=false -DarchetypeGroupId=com.airhacks -DarchetypeArtifactId=javaee8-essentials-archetype -DarchetypeVersion=0.0.2 -DgroupId=com.javabullets.javaee8 -DartifactId=javaee8<\/pre>\n<p>Then lets compile straight away and make sure there are no errors \u2013<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">E:\\code\\javaee8&gt;mvn clean package<\/pre>\n<p>Note the archetype is compiled against Java 8, we will move it to Java 9 in the next section<\/p>\n<p>The source code is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/farrelmr\/javaee8\">https:\/\/github.com\/farrelmr\/javaee8<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Open in Eclipse<\/h2>\n<p>In \u201cEnterprise Explorer\u201d select \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Import &gt; Import\u2026 &gt; Maven &gt; Existing Maven Projects<\/p>\n<p>Navigate to your Java EE 8 directory, click Finish and let Eclipse load your project into Eclipse<\/p>\n<p>Open the pom.xml file and change source and target from 1.8 to 1.9 \u2013<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:xml\"> &lt;properties&gt;\r\n    &lt;maven.compiler.source&gt;1.9&lt;\/maven.compiler.source&gt;\r\n    &lt;maven.compiler.target&gt;1.9&lt;\/maven.compiler.target&gt;\r\n    &lt;failOnMissingWebXml&gt;false&lt;\/failOnMissingWebXml&gt;\r\n &lt;\/properties&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>Then run maven (right click the project &gt; Run As\u2026 &gt; maven install)<\/p>\n<h2>Add Project to Open Liberty<\/h2>\n<p>Go to \u2013Servers &gt; \u201cWebSphere Application Server Liberty\u201d &gt; Right Click \u201cAdd and Remove\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-21_00_53-Add-and-Remove....png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71486\" src=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-21_00_53-Add-and-Remove....png\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Move our javaee8 application from Available to Configured<\/li>\n<li>Press Finish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Start Open Liberty<\/h2>\n<p>Servers &gt; \u201cWebSphere Application Server Liberty\u201d &gt; Right Click \u201cStart\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You will get an error message about setting a keystore. I am just cancelling this as its used by the \u201clocal connector\u201d feature. Ive not found a way to clear this error on Eclipse \u2013 but will post when I have.<\/p>\n<p>The server will start and you can access the pre-installed application on \u2013<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/localhost:9080\/javaee8\/resources\/ping\">http:\/\/localhost:9080\/javaee8\/resources\/ping<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-21_12_24-Mozilla-Firefox.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-71487\" src=\"http:\/\/www.javacodegeeks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-12-21_12_24-Mozilla-Firefox.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Woohoo running Java 9 on Java EE 8 Open Liberty!!!!<\/h3>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>This post uses Adam Bein\u2019s approach to running Java 9 on Java EE 8 Open Liberty \u2013 but demonstrates how you can integrate this into Eclipse Oxygen.
