Every season, the Indian Premier League (IPL) transforms into a theatre of audacity, where bat meets ball with unrelenting force, and boundaries shrink under the weight of fearless intent. It is a stage where timing flirts with power, and innovation constantly redraws the limits of what seems possible in T20 cricket.
Over the years, a select few have risen above the chaos, transforming clean striking into an art form and dominance into routine. These are the players who don’t just score runs but bend games to their will, six-hitters who have defined eras, shattered records, and left bowlers searching for answers.
With each passing season, the IPL has witnessed a surge in the number of balls sailing over the boundary ropes. Across its 18-year history, the growth has been staggering. The total number of sixes struck touched 1,294 last season, more than double the 506 recorded in the inaugural 2008 edition. With the expansion in fixtures and evolving batting philosophies, the rate of sixes per match has also risen sharply, from nine per game in 2008 to 18 in 2025.
It is precisely why, alongside the Orange Cap, the IPL also awards the batter with the most sixes in a season. Nicholas Pooran of Lucknow Super Giants claimed the honour in 2025 with 40 maximums, just two short of what Abhishek Sharma had smashed in 2024.
The 2026 season promises to be no different. Fasten your seatbelts as power hitters return for another carnival of sixes in the glitzy IPL. Whether it is a tense chase or a match-defining blitz, these towering hits will once again leave fans on the edge of their seats.
As the countdown to IPL 2026 begins, here’s a look at the all-time top five six-hitters in the league’s history:
1. Chris Gayle: Only two players in IPL history have crossed the 300-six mark, and Gayle was the first to get there. Across a 13-year IPL career that ended in 2021, the West Indies legend smashed a staggering 357 sixes in just 142 matches. His most dominant season came in 2012, when he hammered 59 sixes — still the highest in a single IPL edition. He remains the only player to have hit 50-plus sixes in multiple seasons, achieving the feat again in 2013 (51), both times for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
2. Rohit Sharma: No wonder he is called the ‘Hitman’. With 302 sixes, Rohit holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian in IPL history. He reached the milestone across 272 matches spanning 18 seasons. Despite stepping away from international T20s, the former Mumbai Indians captain remains active in the IPL and still has a realistic shot at surpassing Gayle at the top.
3. Virat Kohli: Perhaps an unexpected entrant in this list for some, Kohli’s presence underlines his evolution as a T20 batter. The RCB stalwart has struck 291 sixes in 267 matches. Heading into yet another season, he is within touching distance of the 300 mark and is in direct competition with Rohit, with just an 11-six gap separating the two.
4. MS Dhoni: One of the greatest finishers in the format, Dhoni’s six-hitting ability remains as feared as ever. Even at 44, he continues to produce flashes of his vintage self. While his batting opportunities have reduced in recent years, his impact remains undiminished. He has accumulated 264 sixes in 278 matches — many of them coming in pressure situations that have defined his legacy.
5. AB de Villiers: The original ‘Mr. 360’. De Villiers revolutionised modern T20 batting with his innovative strokeplay and ability to target any part of the ground. Before retiring from the IPL in 2021, he blasted 251 sixes in just 184 matches, often making the impossible look routine.
