Data Compliance in Spain

As a member of the European Union, Spain implemented the EU Data Protection Directive through the Organic Law 15/1999 of December 13 on the Protection of Personal Data. However, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaced the Directive, becoming applicable in Spain on May 25, 2018. According to the GDPR, written consent must be obtained from the data subject, and failure to comply can result in fines, which, under the GDPR, can be significantly higher than the range specified in the original statement.
