Emily 'Emiru' Schunk On Streamer Safety: The Dark Side Of Twitch Fame
Twitch “costume play” queen Emily "Emiru" Schunk has been playing dress-up since she was young. Today, the hobby has made her one of the most followed women on Twitch, with 2 million fans on the platform (she has another 5 million followers across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X). Schunk started livestreaming the multiplayer battle game League of Legends in 2015, and went viral with her cosplay, where she sports countless colorful wigs and manga-style character outfits. Her popularity makes her an advertising powerhouse—video game makers pay her big bucks both to stream their titles and to wear elaborate costumes of their characters at conventions. In August, Marvel partnered with her to host her own cosplay contest with a $100,000 purse for the best-dressed fan. Forbes estimates she earned around $1.5 million over the last 12 months from her Twitch streams, a podcast, YouTube Adsense and a variety-show series sponsored by AT&T. “When you look at the top streamers, they’re just straight-up entertainers,” Schunk says. “On stream, it’s just you...You can’t fake a personality for 12 hours a day every single day for years.”

This Entrepreneur Made Sustainability Profitable—Here's How
One bad apple can spoil the supply chain, so Katherine Sizov uses software to find rotten ones. In 2019, she launched Seattle-based Strella, which uses machine learning models and food-sniffing sensors to monitor inventory to prevent produce from rotting. AI-connected sensors measure the hormones plants exude as they ripen. Based on the data, Strella informs vendors about the best time to ship and sell it. To date, Sizov says she has analyzed more than 1.5 billion pounds of apples, saving over 40 million pounds from going to waste. Investors Google Ventures, Yamaha Motor Ventures and Millennium New Horizons have put $18.5 million in. Sizov says her service is good for the planet—and potentially highly profitable. “A lot of sustainable solutions are profitable, driving optimization and driving more elegant solutions.”

Where Maverick Fits Into The Future Of Energy In A Sustainable World
Using his background in biology, Eric Herrera brews up proteins in his lab that can dissolve rocks. His goal? Make harvesting valuable metals easier on miners—and the environment. The idea came to him in 2022, while on an Explorers Club expedition in the Arctic Circle. There, Herrera, who served for two years in the Navy as a medical scientist, encountered iron-eating bacteria that survived by secreting chemicals that could melt minerals, leaving behind the iron for the bacteria to absorb. Soon, he launched Maverick, based in San Francisco, which uses the same organic proteins to extract oil and minerals at scale without harmful chemicals or high-pressure systems. “Simply put, we break rocks and take out all the goodies,” Herrera says. With Maverick, companies don’t even need to dig a traditional mine. Instead, they simply drill a small hole, pump the proteins and bring the liquefied elements up as if they were water. “What we’re left with is a soup of critical elements, and we separate them,” he says. In 2025, Maverick raised a $19 million seed round led by Olive Tree Capital with participation from Y Combinator.
