The Home Service Club has its pros and cons. Service plans are very affordable, and multiple add-on packages can help homeowners cover everything they need. However, the company is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and received less-than-stellar Trustpilot ratings. The Home Service Club may have a lot to offer the right customer, though.

It could be a great fit for homeowners with relatively new appliances in newer properties. The affordable monthly fees make it a great choice, and while the service fees are somewhat high, newer homes shouldn’t have as many issues to handle.

We performed extensive research to get to know The Home Service Club better. We felt its two plans and add-on coverage were easy to understand and provided plenty of security.

Pros

  • Monthly fees are relatively affordable
  • Add-on coverages provide more peace of mind
  • Customers can choose their own technicians

Cons

  • Only two service plans are available

The Home Services Club is a home warranty company that provides homeowners with some peace of mind. The company was formed in 2009 and now serves all 50 states. It offers two coverage plans that are easy to understand (though relatively limited) as well as some add-on policies to improve coverage.

But there is more to choosing a home warranty company than just its coverage. In this Home Service Club review, we’ll take an in-depth look at this warranty provider to help you determine whether it’s a good fit for your needs.

About The Home Service Club

The Home Service Club, headquartered in New York City, has been in business since 2009 and offers home warranty policies designed to protect homeowners from expensive repairs on appliances and home systems. Coverage is available in all 50 states.

Plans include everything from microwaves and garbage disposals to air conditioning systems and water heaters. The two options are the Standard Coverage Plan, which includes most systems and appliances in the home, and the Comprehensive Coverage Plan. The latter option includes many more items, including pest control and gas leaks. There are also additional coverages available for items like pools, roofs and sprinkler systems. Home Service Club also offers services to real estate professionals.

We used the company website to get a quote, and the process for requesting an estimate is pretty straightforward. All that’s required is basic contact info, your location and the size of your home. This can be a benefit for those who prefer to get a quote online instead of in-person or over the phone.

Securing a Home Warranty Plan: We Put The Home Service Club to the Test

We wanted to test out The Home Service Club’s customer journey, from submitting a request for a quote to submitting a claim. Here’s how it went.

Submitting a Request for a Quote

This part of the process couldn’t get much easier. All that’s required is the user’s name and contact information, address as well as some small details about the home. After submission, a representative from The Home Service Club will contact you over the phone or through email.

The Home Service Club’s FAQ page states that the company’s plans can be purchased completely online. An in-home inspection isn’t required to start your services.

Submitting a Claim

It’s impossible to submit a claim without a login and customer identification number. However, The Home Service Club states that customers can submit a claim by calling the service hotline or submitting a claim online. The website is also mobile-friendly.

What We Like About The Home Service Club

It’s worth noting that Home Service Club customers can choose their own technicians. They’ll have to call ahead, but this can be a great benefit for those who aren’t comfortable with strangers in their home. Also, while the number of plans is limited, the coverage is fairly comprehensive.

The estimated monthly fees are also a pro. They’re more affordable than those of most other home warranty companies. Others tend to cost $10 to $50 more.

What We Didn’t Like About The Home Service Club

The plans are pretty limited in volume (not necessarily coverage). We would like to see a third plan that mixes coverages. Also, the service fee per call ranges from a reasonable $65 to an expensive $125. The higher end of the range is significantly more expensive than many other warranty providers’. However, this will vary based on your home, plan and other factors, so it’s worth getting a quote to get a sense of your exact cost.

Finally, cancellation isn’t super straightforward and can get costly.

Payout Limitations and Other Considerations From The Home Service Club

Payout limitations vary considerably between the different items covered. In total, the company will cover up to $9,000 per year, but there are individual limits on the items. For example, HVAC systems are eligible for up to $2,000 per 12-month period. For hot water pumps, the company will only pay $600 in 12 months.

Also, note that cancellation fees aren’t as straightforward as one might hope. Canceling costs a $45 administrative fee. However, our research shows that additional fees may be associated with canceling plans.

Home Service Club Availability

The Home Service Club is available in all 50 states, including Washington, D.C. Customers throughout the country can rely on the company to fix their broken items or systems no matter where they live.

The Home Service Club vs. American Home Shield

American Home Shield offers more service plans than The Home Service Club. The former company also provides most of the same comprehensive coverages at a higher cost. Consequently, The Home Service Club could be a solid choice for homeowners on a budget.

The Home Service Club vs. American Residential Warranty

American Residential Warranty offers three coverage options as opposed to two. However, the most comprehensive plan is much more expensive and no more comprehensive than The Home Service Club’s. Home Service Club Reviews and Experience

Home Service Club generally gets mixed customer reviews. Many consumers tout the company’s expansive coverage options, which include systems and appliances of all ages, makes and models. Other customers called out the quick service time, as HSC will typically send out a tech without requiring an inspection. Customer service was also a highlight to many consumers, thanks to a national call center that operates 24/7.

Some consumers have dinged the company, however, for a number of reasons. Despite the budget-friendly monthly premium, many customers have stated that Home Service Club is not the cheapest provider on the block. This is due to higher-than-average service call fees and cancellation fees. Others have issued complaints with the BBB, saying that the company had a delayed response when it comes to handling claims. Finally, a home warranty company is only as good as the techs that swing by to handle issues, and some consumers have called out poor experiences with local professionals.

Bottom Line: Is The Home Service Club Right for You?

Ultimately, if you have a home that is prone to breaking down (essentially an older home), then The Home Service Club probably isn’t a good fit for you. The high service fees and past customer experiences lacking timelines and communication might be an issue. However, if you have a newer home and want to protect its appliances and systems without paying an arm and a leg, The Home Service Club could be a great option. The monthly fees are affordable, and you shouldn’t have to pay for too many service fees.
