Our Expert Take

Those in the market for a solid travel rewards card with no annual fee and an introductory APR will find the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card (rates & fees) a great addition to their wallet.

Why We Like It

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers a straightforward earning structure: You earn 1.25 miles for every dollar spent on every purchase. These miles can be redeemed for travel expenses such as flights, hotels and car rentals, through Capital One Travel or transferred to Capital One’s travel partners like Air Canada or British Airways.

There’s no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, so the card is an excellent companion for international travelers. Additionally, the VentureOne offers protection for some travel-related issues.

What We Don’t Like

While the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a strong contender for simple, everyday purchases, the flat 1.25 miles per dollar earning rate isn’t as high as some cards that focus on specific spending categories. There are also no rotating rewards categories to take advantage of, which could be a limitation for those looking to maximize their earning potential.

Who It’s Best For

This card is ideal for those who want a simple way to earn travel rewards, especially if you don’t want to deal with complex bonus categories or spending limits. It’s a great choice for frequent travelers seeking a no annual fee card that offers solid rewards on all purchases and a flexible introductory APR offer.

Pros & Cons
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • No annual fee
  • No penalty APR
  • Ongoing rewards rate is relatively low
  • Booking via Capital One Travel required to earn the highest rewards
Card Details
  • $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees

  • Earn unlimited 1.25X miles on every purchase, every day
  • Miles won’t expire for the life of the account and there’s no limit to how many you can earn
  • Earn 5X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, where you’ll get Capital One’s best prices on thousands of trip options
  • Use your miles to get reimbursed for any travel purchase—or redeem by booking a trip through Capital One Travel
  • Transfer your miles to your choice of 15+ travel loyalty programs
  • Enjoy 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months; 19.24% – 29.24% variable APR after that; balance transfer fee applies

Credit Score

Excellent, Good (700 - 749)

Our Expert Take

If you’re looking for a cash-back credit card for redeeming points for travel, the Chase Freedom Flex® may be exactly what you need.

Why We Like It

This card features strong rewards rates, which are further enhanced by quarterly rotating bonus categories that earn a hefty 5% (activation required). You can redeem points for cash back, statement credits, gift cards, merchandise or travel through Chase Travel℠.

For a no annual fee card, the Freedom Flex offers impressive benefits, such as cellphone protection, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage.

New cardholders are eligible for a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.99% to 28.49% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies. So if you’ve got a big purchase planned and need extra time to pay, you won’t pay interest within the introductory APR period.

What We Don’t Like

While the earning rate on rotating categories is generous, it only applies to the first $1,500 spent each quarter, effectively limiting the cash back you can earn. And it’s not automatic—cardholders must activate the bonus every three months. The Freedom Flex charges a foreign transaction fee, so it’s not ideal if you’re traveling internationally.

Who It’s Best For

The Freedom Flex is well-suited for those wanting to maximize their rewards and can take advantage of quarterly spending bonuses. Cardholders with a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card can supercharge their earnings by pairing it with the Freedom Flex to enable transferable points redemptions through Chase’s airline and hotel partners.

Pros & Cons
  • No annual fee
  • Rotating quarterly categories earn 5% rewards when activated, up to a combined quarterly $1,500 maximum
  • Travel rewards rate rivals some of the best premium travel cards
  • Generous rewards rate in several other categories
  • Travel bookings must be made through Chase Travel℠ to earn 5% cash back
  • Quarterly rewards access requires activation every quarter
Card Details
  • Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening
  • 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. Enjoy new 5% categories each quarter!
  • 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, our premier rewards program that lets you redeem rewards for cash back, travel, gift cards and more
  • 3% cash back on drugstore purchases and dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery service, and unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.
  • No minimum to redeem for cash back. You can choose to receive a statement credit or direct deposit into most U.S. checking and savings accounts. Cash Back rewards do not expire as long as your account is open!
  • 0% Intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.99%-28.49%.
  • No annual fee – You won’t have to pay an annual fee for all the great features that come with your Freedom Flex® card

Credit Score

Good, Excellent (700 - 749)

Our Expert Take

The Wells Fargo Autograph® Card (rates & fees) is excellent for everyday spending with bonus categories that most people regularly use.

Why We Like It

The strong earning structure emphasizes common spending categories, which makes it easy to quickly earn rewards. Cardholders can get the best value by transferring points to Wells Fargo’s airline and hotel partners. Otherwise, points are redeemable at a fixed 1 cent per point. The card provides cellphone protection, an auto rental collision damage waiver and a 0% introductory APR on purchases for 12 months from account opening. A variable APR of 19.24%, 24.24%, or 29.24% applies for purchases after the intro period ends and for balance transfers. The card has a balance transfer fee of up to 5%, minimum $5. There’s also no foreign transaction fee.

What We Don’t Like

Wells Fargo has a short list of airline and hotel transfer partners (for now) which limits the value and flexibility of Wells Fargo points. But if you prefer cash rewards, the card can help you boost your earnings on purchases.

Who It’s Best For

If you’re looking for strong earnings rates on everyday spending and you want to avoid foreign transaction fees, this card could work for you.

Pros & Cons
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Introductory APR period
  • Wide array of bonus categories
  • Cellphone insurance and other protections
  • No domestic airline transfer partners
  • No elevated rewards on groceries
  • No introductory balance transfer APR

Our Expert Take

The One Key™ Card is for anyone who often books travel through Expedia and its partner network.

Why We Like It

The One Key™ Card earns a competitive 3% in OneKeyCash on Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, 3% in OneKeyCash on gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and food delivery purchases and 1.5% in OneKeyCash on other purchases.

Points can be redeemed for hotels, accommodation rentals, rental cars, flights and activities through the One Key programs, which is powered by Expedia. Finally, it offers a generous cellphone insurance policy: up to $1,000 in coverage ($25 deductible applies).

What We Don’t Like

While the One Key™ Card offers solid rewards on all purchases, it’s limited to Expedia, Vrbo and Hotels.com for redemptions so you won’t have the same flexibility as cards that allow point transfers to airline or hotel partners. And to earn the highest rewards in the travel categories, you’ll need to achieve One Key’s top-tier status.

Who It’s Best For

The One Key™ Card is perfect for anyone who wants a simple, no annual fee rewards card with an easy way to redeem rewards through Expedia, Vrbo and Hotels.com. It’s especially great for those who frequently book travel through Expedia and its partners and want to take advantage of exclusive offers and selection of travel options.

Pros & Cons
  • Higher welcome bonus than many comparable cards
  • Solid travel protections for a no annual fee card
  • High reward rates on several common everyday spending categories in addition to One Key brands
  • No elevated rewards on travel purchases outside from One Key brands
  • No access to transfer partners
  • Rewards and welcome bonus in the form of OneKeyCash that can only be used at Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo

Our Expert Take

The Hilton Honors American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees) offers the ability to earn Hilton Honors points for each dollar you spend on eligible purchases and automatically qualifies you for elite perks.

Why We Like It

The card offers robust earning categories that let you earn bonus points in many common areas of spending. Cardholder benefits include automatic Hilton Honors™ Silver status (but you can move up to Gold status if you spend at least $20,000 on your card within a calendar year), secondary car rental damage insurance¹ and no foreign transaction fees.

What We Don’t Like

The card offers minimal travel benefits. Frequent Hilton customers may find more value in one of the other Hilton cards, which charge an annual fee. The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card (terms apply) provides Hilton Honors™ Gold status, higher earning rates and more travel perks. When traveling internationally, you may find Amex is not accepted everywhere.

Who It’s Best For

Pros & Cons
  • High point earning rates
  • Generous welcome bonus
  • Automatic Silver status includes fifth night free on award stays

Our Expert Take

The Bilt World Elite Mastercard® (rates & fees) is unique because you can pay and earn points on rent. For rent payers, it offers a way to earn a bunch of points each year without the transaction fee (up to 100,000 per calendar year).

Why We Like It

Bilt points can be transferred at a 1:1 rate to various transfer partners, including United and Hyatt. Points can also be redeemed through Bilt Travel for 25% more value or used as a statement credit. The card also offers various travel benefits, cellphone protection and the ability to double points (excluding rent) on the first day of every month (known as Rent Day) for up to 1,000 bonus points per month.

What We Don’t Like

To earn points, cardholders must use the card at least five times during each statement period (rewards & benefits). Unlike the other listed cards, the Bilt card doesn’t offer a welcome bonus.

Who It’s Best For

The card is most beneficial for renters who are interested in travel rewards.

It’s almost impossible to earn rewards on what is the biggest monthly expense for many people, which is why anyone who pays rent should have a Bilt Mastercard in their wallet. Not only will you earn points just from paying your rent (up to 100,000 points in a calendar year), you’ll do it without being charged a fee for the transaction, and Bilt points are among the most versatile travel points around. (Pro Tip: Don’t redeem Bilt points to pay rent when you can get much more value for them for travel!).

Our Expert Take

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® keeps it simple with a solid base rate on all purchases with a few higher earnings categories. Plus, you can redeem rewards for travel or cash back.

Why We Like It

There’s no extra effort required to earn healthy rewards across all your purchases. The card offers benefits such as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage. It also offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.99% to 28.49% applies. An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days of account opening. After that, a fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer applies.

What We Don’t Like

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® won’t be the best choice for traveling abroad because it charges a foreign transaction fee. You’re also required to book through Chase Travel℠ to earn top rewards on travel, which doesn’t always offer the best price. However, just like the Chase Freedom Flex®, pairing this with a premium card allows you to pool and transfer your points to travel partners.

Who It’s Best For

The Freedom Unlimited is a good fit for people who don’t want the hassle of juggling multiple credit cards to maximize rewards on every purchase.

Pros & Cons
  • Earn a minimum of 1.5% back on all purchases
  • Long intro APR for purchases and balance transfers

Why We Like It

With the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, cardholders earn at least 1.5 points per dollar on every purchase and 3 points per dollar on travel purchased through the Bank of America Travel Center. These points can be redeemed for travel expenses and dining purchases.

Customers with qualifying balances in their Bank of America accounts can earn a bonus on points through the program, increasing their rewards potential. This is a great perk for existing Bank of America customers who already have higher-tier banking accounts.

This card comes with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. Additionally, new cardholders can earn a generous welcome bonus.

What We Don’t Like

Although the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card offers a simple earning structure, point redemptions don’t include transfers to travel partners.

How Do Travel Credit Cards With No Annual Fee Work?

Typically, credit card annual fees cover the cost of extensive benefits provided to the cardholder, such as high rewards rates and travel perks. However, to attract new users, issuers often waive annual fees during the first year or sometimes entirely, which can be particularly appealing for new applicants.

Having a card with no annual fee does not mean you should expect no fees at all—you might still pay interest, over-limit fees, late payment fees or a foreign transaction fee. Carefully consult your cardholder agreement and the Schumer box therein.

Benefits of No Annual Fee Travel Credit Cards

Each card offers its own suite of benefits. These vary depending on the issuer, but most travel credit cards offer at least some of the following:

  • Fraud protection (all consumer cards are required to offer a certain degree of protection)
  • Introductory APRs
  • Welcome offers
  • Rewards earning (in the form of cash back, points or miles redeemable for airline tickets, hotel stays or other travel)
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Discounts on in-flight food and beverage purchases

Who Should Get a No Annual Fee Travel Credit Card?

Many people can benefit from a no annual fee travel credit card. Whether you travel occasionally or all the time, these cards offer benefits targeted toward travelers without charging you an annual fee.

  • If you’re an occasional traveler. Look for a travel credit card that offers the most benefits for the lowest fee—You can probably find a no annual fee card that will fit your needs.
  • If you’re a frequent traveler. While you may be able to find a no annual fee travel card that works for you, there’s a good chance you would benefit more from one of the best travel cards, many of which do charge an annual fee.

A no annual fee travel card may be even more powerful when paired with another credit card. For example, the Chase Freedom Flex is a solid card on its own, but when paired with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve your points can go 25% to 50% further through Chase.

How To Choose the Best Travel Credit Card With No Annual Fee

Selecting the right credit card involves identifying the combination of card features that offer the best value for your needs. A card rewarding your unique spending habits and goals could outperform one that ranks best for the average consumer.

All the travel credit cards in our ranking allow consumers to earn travel rewards points or cash back without paying an annual fee. But there’s more to picking a travel credit card than just finding an option without a fee.

Compare Rewards Programs

Not all rewards are created equal. Look closely at how the rewards program aligns with your travel habits. Ask Yourself:

  • Are you earning rewards you’ll use? For instance, if you’re considering a hotel or airline credit card, research the loyalty program.
  • Is redeeming rewards for flights or stays you plan to book easy?
  • Do blackout dates or limited redemption options reduce its value?

If you rarely fly, consider skipping airline miles and looking for cards that offer more flexible rewards and bonus points in the categories you spend the most in.

Consider Flexible Travel Options

Flexible travel cards can offer greater versatility than those tied to a single loyalty program. Some cards allow you to transfer points to multiple travel partners or redeem them for travel purchases, gift cards or even cash. Explore these questions:

  • Do you want to be able to switch between airlines or hotel chains?
  • Would you benefit from using points for nontravel expenses in a pinch?

Look at 0% Intro APR Offers

Many top travel credit cards include introductory 0% APR offers, which can save you money in the short term. Make sure to check:

  • Does the intro APR apply to new purchases, balance transfers or both?
  • How long does the promotional period last?

Look for Other Cardholder Perks

Choose a card that not only earns rewards but also includes perks tailored to how you travel. For example:

  • No foreign transaction fees save you money abroad.
  • Travel insurance benefits like trip delay coverage or rental car insurance provide peace of mind.
  • Elite loyalty status perks (like upgrades or priority boarding) make your trips more comfortable.

How To Apply for a No Annual Fee Travel Credit Card

  1. Start with a travel goal. Whether you’re planning a family trip to Hawaii or a honeymoon to Paris, create your plan first, then begin to understand which cards will help you reach your goal.
  2. Decide which travel credit card to apply for. Research the cards you’re interested in and weigh the rewards, benefits and other factors to determine which card is best for you.
  3. Check your credit. Before applying, know your credit score and review your credit history. No annual fee travel credit cards often require good to excellent credit for approval. The better your credit score and history, the higher your chances of getting approved.
  4. Improve creditworthiness. If needed, enhance your chances of approval by taking steps to improve your credit. This includes paying off any existing debts and lowering your credit utilization ratio, which shows how much of your available credit you currently use.
  5. Choose the application method. The fastest way to apply for a credit card is typically online. However, applying over the phone, by mail, or in person is also possible.
  6. Understand the card terms. Familiarize yourself with the card’s terms and conditions. Pay special attention to the fine print for critical details before submitting your application.

Is a Credit Card With No Annual Fee Worth It?

A no annual fee credit card is smart if the rewards and benefits align with your spending habits, offering value without added cost. However, some cards with annual fees provide elevated perks or rewards that can exceed the fee, making them worthwhile for the right spender. Balancing the cost of the fee against the value you’ll gain is key. Take time to compare options and choose the card that delivers the best overall value for your lifestyle.
