Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

If you have or are willing to get the required Business Prime membership to apply for the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card*, you can get ultrahigh rewards on your Amazon-related spending or choose 90-day financing to buy yourself some extra time to pay the bill. There are plenty of business cards that offer an introductory APR on purchases, but this is the only one we know of that offers you the chance to get ongoing promotional APR financing on eligible purchases.

The card also comes with a slew of additional perks, including purchase protection, return protection, baggage insurance and a few Amex-specific benefits like access to Amex Offers, Global Assist Hotline and a Lowest Hotel Rates Guarantee for hotels booked via Amex Travel.

What We Don’t Like

For businesses that aren’t solo entrepreneurs, an Amazon Business Prime account starts at $179 and escalates based on the number of account users. Those without a Prime membership can apply for the Amazon Business American Express Card*, however cardholders earn a lower rate on Amazon purchases and receive a fewer number of days to finance a purchase.

Who It’s Best For

Any business that has a Business Prime membership (or is willing to get one) and relies on Amazon products should consider getting this card.

Pros & Cons
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Free employee cards include purchase controls
  • On each eligible purchase, choose 5% back or 90-day terms at Amazon and Whole Foods
  • Amazon Prime membership required
  • No intro APR offer
  • Standard APR can be high, depending on your credit
Card Details
  • Earn a $125 Amazon.com gift card upon approval for the card
  • No annual fee
  • Choose 5% back or 90 days terms on eligible U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market with an eligible Prime membership
  • The 5% rate applies to the first $120,000 in purchases each calendar year, 1% thereafter
  • Earn 2% back at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers
  • Earn 1% back on other purchases

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

If you can’t stomach the idea of paying for a Business Prime membership, you can still earn strong rewards on your spending or choose 60-day financing on your eligible Amazon-centric purchases with the Amazon Business American Express Card*. The rewards are nice but it’s practically unheard of to be able to access ongoing extended interest-free financing on your purchases. For businesses with fluctuating cash flow, that could be the most valuable benefit of the card.

The card also comes with similar perks as the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card*, including purchase protection, return protection, baggage insurance and several Amex-specific benefits like access to Amex Offers, Global Assist Hotline and a Lowest Hotel Rates Guarantee for hotels booked via Amex Travel.

What We Don’t Like

With the Prime version of this card offering so much more in terms of rewards and extended financing, it’s likely worth it for most businesses to spring for the Business Prime membership to qualify for that version.

Who It’s Best For

For businesses with big spending at Amazon Business, on Amazon.com, Whole Foods or on AWS, the Amazon Business American Express Card* can bring big rewards.

Pros & Cons
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Free employee cards include purchase controls
  • On each eligible purchase, choose 3% back or 60-day terms at Amazon & Whole Foods
  • High penalty APR
  • No intro APR offer
  • Standard APR can be high, depending on your credit

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees) offers terrific rates on Hilton spending, plus status perks that can improve your stays. The reward rates are also appealing on all other spending for those looking to earn rewards for use on future stays within the brand. Although the card has an annual fee of $195, it can be offset by an up to $240 annual property credit for eligible Hilton purchases, available as $60 quarterly credits.

What We Don’t Like

Since the card earns Hilton Honors points, it’s best for those who often stay at Hilton properties, as other redemption options have poor value. The card also lacks an intro APR offer on purchases, which could be helpful for a business looking to save on big expenses.

Who It’s Best For

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card is best for Hilton superfans who want to earn rewards for future stays.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

If you want access to a wide array of premium airport lounges and can take advantage of its long list of credits and perks, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) will bring you almost as much joy as hockey stick-shaped growth on your revenue chart. Very few other business cards offer as much access to airport lounges worldwide. Outside of the airport, the card’s credits include an up to $200 airline incidental fee credit (for your one selected qualifying airline), an up to $200 Hilton property credit for eligible purchases, a $199 CLEAR® Plus credit, an up to $120 U.S. wireless telephone statement credit and more. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

What We Don’t Like

Although the card comes with plenty of credits that, added up, can far exceed the card’s weighty annual fee, it takes a lot of work to maximize them and may not be usable at all for some people. In addition, outside of airfare and prepaid hotels booked through Amex, the card’s earning rates are mediocre.

Who It’s Best For

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is a fit for a business that wants access to an airport lounge in any airport they fly from and can use a healthy portion of the card credits to compensate for the annual fee.

Pros & Cons
  • Excellent welcome bonus
  • A slew of potential statement credits
  • Extensive airport lounge access
  • Rich suite of travel perks
  • High spending requirement to earn the welcome bonus
  • Annual fee and additional cardholder fees are very high
  • Limited spending bonus categories
  • Some credits are doled out in increments, making them harder to use
Card Details
  • Welcome Offer: Earn 150,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $20,000 in eligible purchases on the Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • The American Express Global Lounge Collection® can provide an escape at the airport. With complimentary access to more than 1,400 airport lounges across 140 countries and counting, you have more airport lounge options than any other credit card issuer on the market as of 10/2024. Access is limited to eligible Card Members.
  • Unlock over $1,000 in statement credits on select purchases, including tech, recruiting and wireless in the first year of membership with the Business Platinum Card®. Enrollment required. Purchases eligible for multiple additional point bonuses will only receive the highest eligible bonus.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

For business owners who can handle tracking categories and credits, the American Express® Business Gold Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees) has enormous potential for its price. The card automatically earns its highest rewards in the top two categories where you spend the most each month from a list of six (4X points on the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these categories each calendar year, then 1X thereafter), making it easy to accrue Membership Rewards® points. In addition, the card’s up to $240 annual flexible business credit ($20 monthly for eligible U.S. purchases) and the monthly statement credit for an eligible Walmart+ membership can be worth more than the card’s annual fee, if utilized. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

What We Don’t Like

For a premium card that earns travel rewards, the actual travel perks are light. There’s no airport lounge access or elite status with this card. And, if you don’t spend in the areas where the card offers the highest rewards and/or credits, you won’t get your money’s worth out of the annual fee.

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Business Gold Card is ideal for a business owner whose spending lines up with the bonus categories on this card and who can take full advantage of the card’s other potential credits and perks.

Pros & Cons
  • Flexible redemption and points transfer options
  • Robust travel benefits
  • Automatic 4 points per dollar on the two eligible categories where you spend the most each billing period on up to $150,000 in annual spending
  • Very high annual fee relative to benefits
  • 4 points per dollar rate capped at $150,000 in annual spending
Card Details
  • Welcome Offer: Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership.*

Why We Like It

Marriott enthusiasts can bank on the benefits offered with the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees). Each year, the card comes with a free night certificate, good for Marriott properties valued at 35,000 Bonvoy points or below (plus, you can top up your certificate with up to an additional 15,000 points). That feature alone can make the card worth the annual fee. The rewards rate is ideal for frequent travelers, offering the highest rewards on Marriott spending and elevated earnings on spending for restaurants worldwide and gas stations, shipping and wireless providers in the U.S.

The card also comes with automatic Gold elite status, which means late checkout when available, a 25% points boost on stays and an enhanced room upgrade when available. Business owners seeking even higher status should know that the card offers 15 Elite Night credits toward the next status rung, Platinum Elite, which requires 50 nights.

What We Don’t Like

The rewards on this card are most valuable when used for future Marriott stays. Since there’s no cashout option, your rewards are essentially locked in the Marriott Bonvoy program.

Who It’s Best For

Travelers loyal to Marriott-branded stays who want automatic elite status and high earnings on their Marriott-related spending are best suited to the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

Businesses who spend under $50,000 a year and want an effortless rewards card will find their match in The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees). It’s hard to beat earning 2% cash back on all your eligible spending, plus you don’t even have to put in any redemption effort—you’ll receive your cash back automatically each billing cycle as a statement credit. The card also comes with a helpful introductory APR for new purchases, giving you access to additional interest-free funds for your business. Plus, the card offers the ability to access expanded buying power* beyond your credit limit, which can be handy when making a big capital investment.

What We Don’t Like

The 2% cash back earnings are capped at $50,000 in annual spending (then 1%), so this card is not a fit for bigger spenders. Additionally, the card doesn’t offer the option to redeem your cash back as anything other than a statement credit.

Who It’s Best For

The Blue Business Cash will appeal to businesses wanting to earn simple cash rewards without any fuss.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

Smaller spending businesses seeking a no-fuss rewarding business card will find exactly that in The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees). There’s no annual fee, and the rewards are straightforward. This card also offers cash flow flexibility, allowing you to occasionally expand your buying power* as needed. It also offers extended warranty¹ and purchase protection¹, a helpful “nice-to-have,” especially on a card with no annual fee.

What We Don’t Like

There’s a $50,000 earning cap on the 2X earning rate (then 1X thereafter), so if your business routinely spends over that amount in a year, you’ll likely find another card more rewarding. Also, since the card’s currency earned is Membership Rewards®, the best redemption value comes from booking travel or transferring to Amex’s airline and hotel loyalty partners. If that’s not in your wheelhouse, consider the cash-back version of this card, The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card instead.

Who It’s Best For

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is readymade for anyone seeking a no annual fee business card that earns Membership Rewards.

Pros & Cons
  • Wide variety of airline transfer partners
  • No annual fee
  • High rewards rate on the first $50,000 in annual spending
  • There is a foreign transaction fee
  • 2 points per dollar rewards rate falls to 1 point per dollar after $50,000 in annual spending

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees) is in the big leagues when it comes to premium airline cards, offering complimentary access to Centurion Lounges, Escape Lounges and 15 visits to Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta same-day (cardholders can earn unlimited visits when their total purchases exceed $75,000 each calendar year). Delta Sky Club access has grown increasingly restricted, and this card guarantees you at least some access without having to fork over the $695 annual individual membership fee.

It also comes with a Companion Certificate for a first class, Delta Comfort+® or main cabin round-trip flight within the U.S. and to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America each year after card renewal (you pay taxes and fees), a host of credits for rideshares and eligible Resy dining with enrollment, and Medallion Qualification Dollar boosts to get you closer to your next status level with the airline.

What We Don’t Like

Delta Sky Club lounge visits are capped at 15 per card member year unless you spend $75,000 or more on the card within a calendar year. If you take more than seven round-trip flights on Delta a year, you’d be better off buying a SkyClub membership and getting one of the less expensive Delta business card options.

Who It’s Best For

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card is worth considering for those who travel several times a year on Delta and want the perks and lounge access that come with this card.

Pros & Cons
  • 15 visits to the Delta Sky Club® per year and entry into Amex Centurion Lounges when you fly Delta and use your card to book your flight
  • Rich travel benefits, including Reserve Concierge and annual companion certificate for eligible flights (taxes and fees apply)
  • Status Boost program gives you a fast track to elite status
  • High annual fee for an airline credit card
  • High standard APR
  • Lower rewards rates outside of Delta spending
Card Details
  • Welcome Offer: Earn 80,000 Bonus Miles after spending $10,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership.

  • Receive a Companion Certificate on a First Class, Delta Comfort+®, or Main Cabin domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round-trip flight each year after renewal of your Card. The Companion Certificate requires payment of government-imposed taxes and fees of between $22 and $250 (for itineraries with up to four flight segments). Baggage charges and other restrictions apply.
  • With the $240 Resy Credit, earn up to $20 per month in statement credits on eligible Resy purchases using your enrolled Card.
  • Earn up to $10 back each month after using your enrolled Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card for U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card’s (Terms apply, see rates & fees) annual fee positions it squarely between the higher annual fee of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees) and the lower annual fee of the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees). This card arguably offers the best of both worlds: solid rewards and an array of decent travel benefits, including a 15% points discount on Delta flights, a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® credit, an annual companion certificate good for main cabin round trip tickets within the U.S. and to Mexico, the Caribbean or Central America (you pay taxes and fees) and first checked bag free on Delta flights.

In addition to its airline-specific rewards, the card offers a $120 rideshare credit for up to $10 back every month (enrollment required), an up to $200 Delta Stays credit, trip delay insurance², car rental loss and damage insurance³, baggage insurance¹ and no foreign transaction fees. These benefits come on top of typical Amex benefits like purchase protection¹ and an extended warranty¹.

What We Don’t Like

Maximizing the potential credits on this card takes work. The annual companion certificate doesn’t apply to partner airline flights or anywhere outside North and Central America.

Who It’s Best For

Those who know they’ll use the Companion Certificate each year and at least some of the card’s other perks can get the most out of this card.

Pros & Cons
  • Up to $440 in annual statement credits
  • Save 15% on Delta Award Travel
  • Valuable Delta flight benefits
  • Annual companion certificate for a domestic, Caribbean or Central American Main Cabin round-trip flight, taxes and fees apply

Methodology

Forbes Advisor evaluated multiple credit cards to find and rank the best Amex business cards. For each credit card, we collected information that potential cardholders would use in their decision-making process, including:

  • Business-related perks
  • Earnings rates
  • Welcome bonuses
  • Introductory APR
  • Fees
  • Redemption options
  • Travel benefits
  • Additional benefits

Forbes Advisor rates cards both as stand-alone products (the card rating on the review) and compared to others in a specific use case (the card rating you see on a specific “Best” list). The rating for each card changes on different “Best” lists according to how a person looking for a card in that category may value certain card features.

For instance, a card that may be considered mediocre on a list of rewards cards could be the top card on a list of rewards cards with no annual fee. That’s because the card might offer limited features compared to other rewards cards, but after we remove cards that charge an annual fee, it’s the best card that remains.

Forbes Advisor re-evaluates each credit card list at least every 12 months to determine if any cards need to be added and/or removed. However, a list could be updated sooner if significant changes are made to the mentioned cards or if a new credit card is announced that’s likely to impact the category.

To learn more about our rating and review methodology and editorial process, check out our guide on how Forbes Advisor rates credit cards.

Pros and Cons of Amex Business Credit Cards

Pros

  • Generous rewards. Amex business credit cards come with some of the strongest reward rates available for business owners. Rewards include both Membership Rewards earned on spending and new cardholder bonuses.
  • Welcome bonuses. Most American Express business credit cards come with welcome bonus offers. Some of the most generous are worth more than $500 to eligible new cardholders who meet the minimum spending requirements.
  • Protections. Amex business credit cards often provide coverage for rental cars, purchases, extended warranty protection and more.

Cons

  • High interest. Like most credit cards, Amex business cards come with high interest rates. The high ongoing interest rates mean carrying a balance on a card can be significantly more expensive than other forms of business financing.
  • High annual fees. Several Amex business cards charge annual fees costing hundreds of dollars, so any rewards and other perks and credits come at a significant cost.
Pro Tip
If you’re operating a new business, a business credit card is generally a poor choice for borrowing money but a great choice for building credit toward future loans while earning rewards and accessing perks.

How To Pick an American Express Business Credit Card

Finding the best business credit card for your needs can be overwhelming. Before applying, review your options and remember you aren’t limited to American Express cards.

Protections and Benefits

Nearly all the American Express business credit cards on this list include benefits such as purchase protection or extended warranties. While some include extra benefits like cellphone coverage or travel perks, not all do so it’s important to read the fine print. Note that benefits aren’t everything: Rewards, annual fees and the specific needs of your business are important factors to consider.

Rewards

With rewards, it’s always best to examine your business’ spending to predict possible rewards. Remember that when running a business, putting all expenses on a credit card isn’t always more beneficial. Credit card processing fees tacked on by vendors may obliterate any rewards earned via a credit card reward program.

Business Management Features

Where can you and your business benefit the most in terms of rewards, perks, benefits and convenience? Nearly all the cards on this list offer business benefits like QuickBooks integration and mobile banking. While these benefits are useful, they may not be exclusive to one card over another. They may, however, vary from issuer to issuer.

Existing Creditors

Do you have a loan with another bank offering business credit cards? You may be more likely to receive approval from a bank you already do business with if your account is in good standing. Consider as many options as possible and always read the fine print before agreeing to anything.

How To Apply for an Amex Business Card

  1. Evaluate your eligibility. Before you apply for an Amex business credit card, check that you meet the qualifications. All applicants must be at least 18 and a legal resident or citizen of the U.S. The person applying must own or have managing authority over a business to receive a business card. Use the Amex prequalification tool to help determine your odds of approval.
  2. Gather the required identification and documentation. You must provide personal identification and business documents when applying for an Amex business card. These documents and information can include a driver’s license, Social Security number, business tax ID number, and a copy of your business license or articles of organization.
  3. Submit an application. You can apply for an Amex business card online or over the phone. To apply online, visit the Amex website and complete the provided form. Be sure to include all the required information accurately and honestly.
  4. Receive approval and get your card. Once your application is submitted, you’ll receive an approval or denial email from Amex. Depending on your business credit history, your application may take some time to process. If your application is approved, you’ll receive your Amex business card in the mail.

How To Qualify For Amex Business Cards

You should only apply for an American Express business credit card if you think you’ll qualify for approval. Though the exact requirements vary by card—typically, premium cards have more stringent requirements than entry-level cards—you’ll need to provide some basic information to qualify for any business card:

  • Business name and address. For sole proprietors, this may be the same as your personal information.
  • Company financial structure. American Express considers corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships.
  • Federal tax ID. A Social Security number may be accepted for sole proprietors, but an EIN is required otherwise.
Pro Tip
Unless your business has an established credit history, your business card application may be run using your personal credit history—making it important to keep your score healthy.

How Many Amex Business Credit Cards Can You Have?

Amex appears to prevent users from obtaining more than four to five total credit cards at any one time, including both personal and business cards. However, cards like the Platinum and Gold-branded cards are excluded from this rule, so you may be able to obtain them even if you already own four or more Amex cards.

Are American Express Business Credit Cards Worth It?

For many companies, an Amex business card can be worthwhile for business expenses. American Express business credit cards have features that may include rewards for purchases, generous welcome offers, benefits and statement credits. However, annual fees on some cards can be significant, which means you’ll need to find a card with benefits that fit your needs. Otherwise, you may be better off with a business credit card from another issuer.

Pro Tip
Consider your estimated spending before committing to a card. Many Amex business cards require certain spending levels to earn welcome offers or obtain other card benefits, which might impact whether a card is worth it to you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Which American Express business credit card is the best for my business?

What is good for one business may not be good for another. Whether an American Express business card is right for your business will depend on your business and spending patterns.

Do I need good personal credit to get a business credit card?

The likely answer is yes. Most issuers will not issue a line of credit to a small business without a personal guarantee from a business operator. Once a business has sufficient assets and income, the business may be able to secure a line of credit without providing an owner’s Social Security number, but it’s up to the issuer.

How is a business credit card different from a personal credit card?

A business credit card is typically issued to a business owner to purchase business-related items and services. Generally, the perks and benefits of these cards can help business owners keep track of spending, build business credit and manage cash flow. Though they also offer rewards and other benefits designed to help businesses, they often require personal credit for approval.

Personal credit cards, on the other hand, are typically granted to an individual for personal use. These cards may offer rewards, discounts and other benefits, but are not generally designed to help businesses manage costs or build business-specific credit. A main benefit of having a business credit card even for a small, one-person business is that it makes it easy at tax time as your business and personal expenses will be on separate cards.

Are American Express cards the best business credit cards?

American Express offers a wide array of cards with an even wider array of benefits attached to those cards, but whether those benefits suit your business is up to you. Many credit card issuers offer business credit cards, but not all offer rewards and benefits as comprehensive or far-reaching as Amex, putting some of its cards at the top of the heap. Still, there are issuers with competitive products that might be better for your business than an American Express, so it’s wise to shop around.
