Chances are you’ve seen a lot of Wix ads. Thanks to a concentrated feature and website builder improvement program over the years, Wix has been spending a lot of effort on publicizing its new capabilities. As part of those new capabilities, there are also new Wix pricing plans (the free plan is still available).

With two user-friendly drag-and-drop website builders, a growing app market and a wide range of advanced features, Wix is working hard to become a scalable solution for businesses of all sizes.

What Is Wix?

Wix is a robust all-in-one website builder and hosting platform. Featuring its new flagship Studio builder suite and a focus on supporting independent developers and small business owners, Wix has become one of the most popular website platforms.

With over 800 free templates, Wix offers two website builders, the Wix Classic editor and the new Wix Studio. Studio offers more flexibility and extra customization to fit developer needs, along with giving users the option of hiring a developer to create a site for them.

Wix Pricing Plans

With the addition of Wix Studio, Wix added a Studio plan set. Features vary a bit compared to sites made using the original Classic builder and are designed with developers in mind.

That said, for those who prefer the more robust Studio builder, those plans offer attractive options and additional features in many cases, compared to the Classic plans. In fact, Studio plans are often more affordable when comparing the features offered, in my opinion. Discount pricing options for yearly plans in one, two and three-year lengths are also available.

The 14-day money-back guarantee is also useful in testing out the premium features of paid plans and plan limitations before fully committing. However, finding Wix pricing details sometimes takes digging deep into multiple menus, so we’ve pulled the Classic and Studio plans together in one place.

Free

Price: Free
Best for: Figuring out how Wix’s builder works and kicking the service’s tires before deciding to buy

Key Features What’s Missing?
Free
Custom domain pointing
500MB storage
Ability to accept payments
1GB bandwidth
Ability to remove Wix branding

Wix’s free plan is very much a ploy to get you in the door and acts more like an unlimited time trial than anything else. No credit card is required at sign-up, and it gives new users a chance to play around with the Classic and Studio builders to see which they prefer.

While it works well for test and personal sites, and is a great entry-level for those looking for affordable plans, the inclusion of Wix branding and being stuck with a subdomain make it unsuitable for businesses and other professional website types in the long run.

Light (Classic)

Price: $24 per month billed monthly or $17 per month billed annually
Best for: New businesses that just need an online presence.

Key Features What’s Missing?
Custom domain pointing
Ability to accept payments
Automated marketing tools
Customer accounts
Unlimited bandwidth
Site analytics

Designed for Wix’s Classic website builder, Light gets you online with the ability to add a custom domain but not much else. Bandwidth caps and Wix branding are removed, but you only get 2GB of storage space.

Compared to other builders out there, it’s a bit steep for what you get. If you’re starting with Light, it’s probably because you plan to upgrade quickly later but want to hold off on a higher price per month due to budget reasons as you slowly build out your site.

Basic (Studio)

Price: $27 per month billed monthly or $19 per month billed annually
Best for: New businesses using the Studio builder

Key Features What’s Missing?
Automated marketing tools
Accept payments
Advanced SEO tools
POS integration
Unlimited bandwidth
Booking functionality

As the entry-level paid plan for the new Studio website builder, Basic comes with more storage than Light at 10GB. Otherwise, the offerings are very similar to the Light plan.

All Studio plans add a CMS item limit. Wix’s content management system (CMS) lets you create, manage and store things including product collections, media collections and customer form data. Then, all that stored content goodness can be connected to your website.

Don’t worry too much about these limits, but keep them in the back of your mind since you might need to upgrade if your website is very CMS-item heavy, as the Basic plan only includes 1,500 CMS items.

Core (Classic)

Price: $36 per month billed monthly or $29 per month billed annually
Best for: Getting started with e-commerce.

Key Features What’s Missing?
Accept online payments
Full e-commerce features
Analytics
Point of sale (POS)
Customer accounts
Booking functionality

Another original Classic builder plan, Core enables online payments, although more advanced e-commerce features aren’t available. It also enables basic analytics and customer accounts that go hand in hand with starting to sell online.

Storage space makes a big jump up to 50GB too, which is really helpful for listing products with photos or videos. The Core plan is the first one that starts to feel like it isn’t hobbled with a wider range of features. If you can manage the annual subscription, the savings start to add up more significantly at this point as well.

Standard (Studio)

Price: $34 per month billed monthly or $27 per month billed annually
Best for: Getting started with e-commerce

Key Features What’s Missing?
POS integration
Extra lead-capture forms
50GB storage
Extra CMS items
Accept online payments
Priority customer care

Similarly priced to the Classic editor Core plan, Studio’s Standard plan adds in POS integration and the more advanced SEO features available through Studio, making it a more economical choice for a starting e-commerce plan.

The extra SEO tools make it a great option for new shops without strong followings that must rely on strong SERPs on Google, Bing or Internet Explorer.

Business (Classic)

Price: $43 per month billed monthly or $36 per month billed annually
Best for: Businesses needing more than bare-bones e-commerce

Key Features What’s Missing?
Stronger e-commerce
Priority customer care
Site chat
Unlimited storage
POS
Advanced e-commerce tools

The Business plan is the first Classic editor plan that offers POS integration. It also offers site chat functionality, booking ability and automated sales tax for better e-commerce functionality. The Business plan also unlocks dropshipping by Modalyst for up to 250 products.

However, the automated sales tax feature is limited to only 100 transactions per month, so online store owners will likely find they need to upgrade fairly quickly. Still, for Classic builder sites, it’s a significant step up from previous plans with double the storage (100GB) of the Core Classic plan.

Plus (Studio)

Price: $40 per month billed monthly or $34 per month billed annually
Best for: Growing businesses

Key Features What’s Missing?
25 lead capture forms
Unlimited storage
120GB storage
Custom analytics
Priority customer care
Dedicated data infrastructure

Slightly cheaper but with more features than the Classic Business plan, Studio’s Plus plan is a strong option for growing businesses. Features such as priority customer care (think of it as a Disney FastPass line) mean less time fighting with your website if anything goes wrong and more time you can spend managing your business.

Plus also makes a big CMS item limit leap to 20,000 and includes 10 client accounts for collaboration with your team.

Business Elite (Classic)

Price: $172 per month billed monthly or $159 per month billed annually
Best for: Larger businesses with significant transaction volume

Key Features What’s Missing?
Advanced e-commerce tools
Custom analytics
Priority support
Single sign-on (SSO)
Unlimited storage space
Multi-site management

The strongest plan available outside of custom Enterprise plan quoting for Classic sites, Business Elite is meant for established businesses with significant transaction volume. It raises the dropshipping item limit to 50,000 and ups the automated sales tax transaction limit to 500 per month.

Even for websites not using e-commerce, Business Elite is attractive for unlimited storage space, custom reporting and priority customer care.

Elite (Studio)

Price: $172 per month billed monthly or $159 per month billed annually
Best for: Robust businesses and developers

Key Features What’s Missing?
Unlimited storage
More collaboration accounts
Custom analytics
Single sign-on (SSO)
Dedicated data infrastructure
Multi-site management

The last Studio plan before custom enterprise plan quotes, Elite starts making the transition to customized hosting with dedicated data infrastructure and custom analytics to gain more control over your business.

Perfect for larger staffing numbers, Elite includes 100 collaborator accounts to help you keep content rolling in easily while still having room for access to automated marketing tools for your sales and marketing teams.

Enterprise (Studio)

Price: Custom quote
Best for: Enterprise-level businesses

Key Features What’s Missing?
Custom CMS quota
Portability
Multi-site management
N/A
Dedicated account manager
N/A

The sky is the limit with the Enterprise plan. In addition to customized limits for CMS, unlimited storage and bandwidth, extra security features and all of the other features in earlier plans, Enterprise gets a dedicated account manager.

For designers, multi-site management is a big win, and being able to cherry-pick infrastructure needs makes a big difference. The only thing really missing with custom quoting is portability. Since Wix is a complete ecosystem, you can’t just pick up your code and move to another host later.

Additional Wix Costs

Wix has fewer extra fees than many other hosts, possibly one reason its initial plans are a touch higher than average for the lower-end plans. However, there are a couple of additional costs to watch out for.

Domain Purchase

Along with almost all web hosting plans, you’ll need to purchase your own domain from your favorite domain registrar. Alternatively, you can claim the first year free and then not worry about it until you need to pay for the renewal the next year.

Add-On Apps

Wix has a pretty strong app market full of in-house and third-party apps. However, paid premium apps can bust a budget in a hurry if you aren’t careful. Some apps, QuickBooks Online for example, also require subscriptions to a third-party service beyond an initial free trial.

Email

Email addresses honestly feel a bit like hidden costs to me because there isn’t a simple price list. Wix doesn’t include forwarding email addresses with plans. Instead, Wix partners with Google, and finding out the cost is a bit of a pain. Google quotes the email boxes based on how many, storage and a few other factors instead of just offering flat package pricing. If you’re already on a paid plan, it’s as simple as going to the business email menu and going through the quote process.

However, those on the free plan can’t see pricing without upgrading to a paid Wix account due to a frustrating catch-22 in the Wix system. Part of the quote process requires entering a domain name (required for the email address to be set up), but even if you already have a domain, you get an “upgrade required to connect domain” message from Wix as soon as you enter it and can’t complete the quote process.

By comparison, direct from Google Workspace plans that include an email per user run between $6 and $18 per person per month. Directly quoted email accounts ran similarly to the Workspace packages when I tested it.

How To Save Money on Wix

A couple ways to save include opting for annual billing and keeping an eye out for promotional discounts.

Yearly Billing

The available anytime way to save with Wix is to choose an annual billing plan. Savings vary by plan chosen but average around 18%. The only real downside is being locked in for a full year and paying the larger sum at once, which may be a stretch for smaller businesses.

Watch for Sales

Wix runs sales on paid plans and app store purchases fairly often. Discounts can be big, with 50% not unheard of around Black Friday. The big kicker is that you’ll have to check the app market homepage and the plan upgrade page frequently to see when a sale is running. So if you aren’t on a deadline for getting your store up and running, it might be worth hanging out on the free plan for a few months as you check the pricing pages for sales each week.

Wix Cost vs. Competitors

Wix pricing starts a little higher than some and a bit lower than others. Initial plan e-commerce features can feel a bit lacking in comparison, but some of its main competitors are focused e-commerce platforms, while Wix is a generalist fit for informational, portfolio and many other types of websites beyond e-commerce.

Wix’s website building tools also feature far more varied templates with more customization options than the competition to help small businesses stand out and not look like just another cookie-cutter website. We have all the details on those capabilities in our full Wix review.

Wix vs. Weebly

Weebly is a bit like a scaled-down version of Wix. There are fewer templates and less customization but still a reasonable selection that can appeal to new shop owners overwhelmed by Wix options. On pricing, Weebly vs. Wix is a bit of a mixed bag. Weebly plans are cheaper and e-commerce is available on all plans, but it charges a transaction fee on some plans where Wix doesn’t.

Wix vs. Square

Built to blend in-person and online sales, Square’s plans have a solid commerce focus. As such, e-commerce features take the forefront at the expense of customization. Wix also far surpasses Square for apps and plugin availability. Square’s complex transaction fee scale is another drawback compared to the less complex Wix pricing.

Wix vs. Shopify

Shopify offers fewer plan levels, and prices jump drastically to $399 per month and then $2,300 per month (billed three years at a time) for the last two before custom quotes. As such, Wix gives businesses more time at lower monthly costs to grow before having to invest large chunks of a small business budget. That said, Shopify does offer deeper e-commerce functionality in several areas.

Our Expert Opinion

I find that Wix manages to offer a good mix of features for all types of websites while still supporting core e-commerce features. The large app market with free and premium apps helps buff up e-commerce functionality as well and allows businesses to customize websites without jumping up to the top-tier plans immediately. The deep customization available with the new Studio website builder, improved SEO and midline pricing make Wix a great option for most businesses.

Do Wix plans come with a dedicated email account?

No, Wix plans do not include a dedicated email account. Wix partners with Google to provide custom emails that can be purchased from your Wix dashboard on a paid plan, or you can purchase directly from Google to use with the domain you have connected to Wix.
