Exit-Intent Trigger
Use this trigger to show a popup when a user is about to leave your website. It detects mouse movements toward the browser’s close button or address bar, helping you capture leads, reduce cart abandonment, or offer last-minute deals before they exit.
How to setup
Setting up this trigger in FireBox is simple:
- Open the campaign editor
- Scroll down to the FireBox settings below the Gutenberg Editor
- Go to Behavior -> Trigger Point
- Choose the Exit-Intent trigger.

When you select the Exit-Intent trigger, additional configuration options become available:
- Minimum Time: To prevent false triggers, the exit-intent popup won’t fire within the first second by default, as users are unlikely to exit that quickly. You can adjust this delay by setting a custom time in milliseconds.
- Firing Frequency: Control how often the exit-intent popup appears per page. Choose “Once Per Page” to show it only once per visit, or select “Unlimited” to trigger it whenever the exit-intent event is detected on the same page.
Does the Exit-Intent trigger work on mobile devices?
Yes, the Exit Trigger works on mobile devices but functions differently due to its touch-based nature. On mobile, the trigger is not based on mouse movement but on specific actions indicating the user may be attempting to leave the page.
In FireBox, we use the signal of the user scrolling up to the top of the page quickly to indicate that they’re about to exit the page, which triggers the popup.
Signal 1: Scroll Up
The URL bar disappears when scrolling down on most smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices. Users typically scroll up slightly to enter a new URL and leave the current page. This action is a strong indicator that they may be preparing to exit.
The challenge lies in determining the right scroll-up threshold. If it’s too sensitive, the popup may trigger with minimal upward movement, and if it’s not sensitive enough, it may never appear when needed.
Signal 2: Back Button Pressing
Coming Soon.
User inactivity as an alternative exit signal
Another way to detect potential exits is by using the Idle Trigger, which detects when a user is inactive on your site for a specified period. This is particularly useful for targeting mobile users, as the Exit Trigger is better suited for desktop devices. To learn how to target visitors based on their device, check out the Device Rule.
While not all users may exit when idle, e-commerce stores often find that inactive users are about to abandon their cart, and triggering an exit offer at the right moment can help recover those sales.
