Overview
The Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) Mentorship Program for Early Career Researchers (ECRs)* is intended to support basic and clinical child health researchers at CHRIM who are early in their appointment to establish their research programs and launch their careers.
The program aims to support an ongoing relationship between ECRs and selected mentors.
The ECRs are invited to an initial (group) meeting where they will meet the co-leads of the Mentorship Program (Dr. Ayesha Saleem and Dr. Allison Dart), coordinator of the Mentorship Program (Lorraine Hernaez), learn more about CHRIM, the benefits of mentorship, and to explore options of being paired with one or two mentors. Having both a career/academic mentor as well as a scientific/research mentor who are experts in the ECR’s area of study is ideal.
ECRs in the Mentorship Program are encouraged to take advantage of learning opportunities and networks shared within the program and to attend the workshops offered:
- Empowering Next-Generation Researchers in Perinatal and Child Health (ENRICH) provides open access learning opportunities, training pathways, and mentorship for emerging perinatal and child health researchers.
- An annual Mentorship Session offered through CHRIM, usually held as a part of Child Health Research Days in October.
- Other learning sessions as offered.
Responsibilities of ECRs in the Mentorship Program
- Attend an initial (group) meeting with co-leads and coordinator of the Mentorship Program.
- Attend one CHRIM CHRD Mentorship Workshop in the first 3 years.
- Participate in self-directed learning and relationship building with mentors.
- Proactively access resources available and engage with the mentors and the Mentorship Program as needed.
Responsibilities of Mentors in the Mentorship Program
- Meet with ECRs in the Mentorship Program as need arises.
- Be available to mentor ECRs within CHRIM either on an individual basis or group opportunities.
- Support the CHRIM CHRD Mentorship Workshop by attending or participating.
All Mentorship participants including ECRs, Mentors, Co-Leads and the Coordinator of Mentorship Program are expected to adhere to professional, respectful work learning environment policies.
Both ECRs and Mentors in the program will be surveyed during CHRIM membership renewal to share their experiences and feedback.
Any questions or comments regarding the Mentorship Program can be directed to [email protected]
*ECRs are typically defined as within the first 5 years of their first independent research position.
