If Congress waits until the end of the year to extend the enhancements, 1.5 million more people will be uninsured in 2026 compared to an earlier extension.
Congress can still protect people from cost increases due to the end of the enhancements — which will exceed $1,000 annually for the average enrollee receiving premium tax credits, and many times that for some people — and minimize the number who are left uninsured by extending the enhancements as soon as possible.

Instead of changing course and prioritizing people with low and moderate incomes as Republicans’ campaign rhetoric about supporting hard-pressed working families suggested, the new law again gives enormous, permanent tax cuts to wealthy households while failing to deliver for individuals and families with low and middle incomes, many of whom will be hurt by the law’s cuts to health care and food assistance.
