    What is geo-blocking?

    Geo-blocking is the practice of restricting access to online content based on the end-user’s location. The technique is often used by websites to comply with licensing agreements, local regulations, or regional pricing and availability rules for media, software, products, and news.

    In some cases, geo-blocking is also used to limit access to services that are illegal in certain countries, such as online gambling. Governments may also use it as part of broader internet censorship policies to restrict access to specific websites or online content.

    Examples of geo-blocking

    Geo-blocking appears across many types of websites and online services, often for different reasons. You might encounter it while streaming films, reading the news, shopping online, using social media, playing games, or accessing financial services.

    Here’s a closer look at how geo-blocking works in each of these situations:

    Streaming

    Streaming services use geo-blocking primarily to manage content rights, which are often licensed separately by country or region. They may also use location controls to help enforce regional age restrictions, manage subscription availability and pricing, and restrict access to certain live events. You may encounter these restrictions on services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and sports streaming platforms.

    News and journalism

    News publishers may use geo-blocking to comply with local laws, manage regional distribution rights, or address differing privacy requirements. For example, some global publishers have chosen to restrict access for visitors from the European Union (EU) rather than adapting their services to comply with GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

    Gaming

    Game publishers may use geo-blocking to manage regional releases and pricing, and prevent players from “region hopping” to buy games in lower-priced markets. Geographic restrictions can also apply to licensed in-game content, such as music or branded assets. Online gaming and gambling services may impose additional location restrictions to comply with local laws.

    Social media

    Geo-blocking on social media can take several forms. For example, some social platforms may restrict specific content to comply with local laws or licensing agreements, while governments may block access to entire social media sites. Geographic controls can also help social media platforms respond to certain localized cyberattacks or abusive activity.

    For example, China restricts access to some foreign international services, including several popular social media platforms. Other countries such as Australia, France, and the UK have introduced or proposed age-based social media restrictions, although these generally rely on age-assurance measures rather than geo-blocking alone.

    E-commerce

    Online retailers may use geo-blocking or geo-redirects to direct shoppers to country-specific storefronts, where prices, products, currencies, shipping options, and terms can differ. In some cases, users may be redirected away from or prevented from accessing another region’s storefront. Within the E.U., certain discriminatory forms of geo-blocking are prohibited under EU Geo-Blocking Regulation.

    Financial services

    Banks and other regulated financial services may use geo-blocking to restrict access or transactions from particular locations. This can help them comply with sanctions and other regulatory requirements, apply geographic restrictions to services such as cryptocurrency trading, or reduce exposure to location-specific security threats. Geographic filtering can also form part of broader defenses against botnets and DDoS attacks.

    How to bypass geo-restricted content

    It’s possible to bypass some geo-restrictions using a VPN, proxy server, the Tor browser, or a Smart DNS service. These tools can mask your real IP address and make it appear that you're connecting from a different location, potentially giving you access to websites, streaming libraries, and other content unavailable in your current region.

    However, none of these methods is guaranteed to work. Streaming platforms and other online services may detect and block known VPN or proxy IP addresses. Some services also determine your location using GPS data, account settings, billing information, or payment methods rather than your IP address, making those restrictions harder to bypass.

    Before attempting to bypass geo-restrictions, check whether the content is available through another provider in your country and review the platform’s terms of service. Circumventing geographic restrictions may violate those terms and could result in account suspension or termination.

    With a VPN

    A VPN can help you access blocked content by encrypting your connection and routing your internet traffic through a VPN server in a location you choose. This masks your IP address and can make it appear as though you’re browsing from a different country or region.

    For example, you might connect to a server in the US, the UK, or Australia while travelling abroad. Websites may then treat your connection as though it originates from your home region, potentially allowing access to content unavailable in your current location.

    A VPN isn’t just for helping you stream your favorite shows. By encrypting your internet traffic, a VPN can help protect your data on public Wi-Fi, make your browsing more private, and potentially reduce certain forms of ISP throttling based on your online activity.

    Without a VPN

    It's possible to access some geo-restricted content using proxy servers, Tor, and Smart DNS services. However, none of these guarantee access — many websites rely on additional signals beyond your IP address to verify your real location.

    Proxy servers

    A proxy server can often unblock geo-restricted content much like a VPN does. It masks your real IP address and routes your traffic through a server in another country, replacing your location with that server's. Unlike a VPN, though, a proxy generally doesn't encrypt your traffic, which will leave your online activity visible to network observers.

    But not all proxies work the same way. Some offer a greater degree of anonymous browsing than others — so-called anonymous proxy servers, for instance, hide your IP address more thoroughly than standard ones.

    Plenty of web-based proxies are ready to use straight from your browser, and it's simple enough to set up a proxy server yourself. But as with a VPN, a proxy won't guarantee you'll get past geo-blocking. Many websites detect and block known proxy IP addresses outright.

    Tor browser

    Geo-blocking can sometimes be bypassed by accessing the Tor network via the Tor browser, which encrypts your traffic and routes it through a series of volunteer-operated servers called nodes, or relays. Each relay peels away one layer of encryption — revealing just enough information to pass your traffic to the next stop, and no more.

    That extra hop-by-hop routing is why Tor tends to leave you with a slower internet connection, but it also means no single relay ever knows both who you are and where your traffic is headed. That split makes it much harder for third parties to pin down your real location or identity.

    But because you can't choose your exit node, Tor isn’t a particularly good tool for unblocking geo-restricted content. Your virtual location is assigned at random each time you connect, so there's no way to deliberately appear in the country you need. You’ll either land somewhere useful, or somewhere completely irrelevant to the content you're trying to reach.

    Smart DNS and DNS changers

    Smart DNS is a service that helps some devices access location-restricted content by redirecting only the part of your connection that reveals your region. Unlike a VPN, it doesn’t encrypt your internet traffic or hide your IP address across your whole connection, which can make it a faster option for streaming, especially on devices that don’t support VPN apps natively.

    But simply changing your device's DNS server isn't the same as using Smart DNS. Switching to a public DNS provider may improve DNS performance, privacy, or security, but it won't change your IP address or bypass geo-blocking on its own. Security-focused DNS services, such as AvastDNS, can also help protect against DNS-based attacks and other online threats.

    Change device location

    Some websites and apps use your device's location settings or GPS data to determine where you're accessing their services. Changing that setting can unlock certain location-based features or content — particularly in mobile apps and games.

    But attempting to spoof your GPS or other device location data won't get you far with most forms of geo-blocking. Streaming platforms, online retailers, financial services, and the majority of websites determine your location primarily from your IP address, often cross-checked against other signals.

    How does geo-blocking work?

    Geo-blocking restricts access to online content based on a user's detected geographic location. When you request a website or streaming service, the server checks your location against a set of access rules. If you fall outside the approved regions, it limits what you can see or blocks you outright.

    The primary location signal for your device is the public IP address. Every device connecting to the internet is assigned one by its ISP, and IP addresses are allocated in blocks to specific countries, regions, and organizations. Geo-blocking services use this allocation data, which is maintained in IP geolocation databases, to map your address to an approximate physical location. And it’s usually accurate down to the city level.

    Your public IP address isn't a fixed identifier, though. It's typically assigned dynamically by your ISP and can change when you reconnect, switch networks, or move to a new location. This is exactly why routing your traffic through a VPN, proxy server, or Tor works: each masks your real IP address with one from a different location, so geolocation databases place you somewhere else entirely.

    IP address checks aren't the only tool in use, though. Some services rely on different location verification methods, including:

    • GPS data: Info collected from your mobile device's location services, which offers far more precise positioning than an IP address alone.

    • Wi-Fi and cell tower triangulation: Data pulled from nearby wireless networks or mobile towers, cross-checked against known location databases.

    • SIM card and mobile carrier data: Info used to identify the country associated with your phone's registered carrier.

    • Billing and payment information: Payment details compared to your apparent location to find location discrepancies.

    • Account settings and browsing history: Your home region, language preference, or past activity compared to your current apparent location to flag inconsistencies.

    • VPN, proxy, and Tor detection: Your IP is checked against blocklists of known data center ranges, VPN provider addresses, and Tor exit nodes. Connections associated with these services might be blocked or challenged.

    Is geo-blocking legal?

    Yes, geo-blocking is legal in most countries, though the specifics vary by jurisdiction and by the type of content or service involved. In general, streaming platforms are allowed to use geo-blocking to limit content due to licensing deals with rights holders. Retailers also widely use it to provide different offerings in different markets.

    The picture gets more complicated in the EU, where the 2018 Geo-Blocking Regulation prohibits unjustified discrimination against customers based on nationality or residence when they're buying general goods and services online. Notably, though, copyright-protected content, like streaming video and e-books, is largely exempt from this rule.

    Geo-blocking can also cross legal lines in the US and other countries when it's used to enforce illegal price-fixing or to divide markets in ways that violate competition law.
