Research We Fund
Largely through individual donations, the ATA is able to fund leading-edge research grants. Applications are reviewed by the ATA’s Scientific Advisory Committee, which makes funding recommendations to the ATA Board of Directors who vote on awards. Over the last 35 years, we have contributed nearly $6 million, which has spurred scientific understanding of tinnitus, resulting in improved tinnitus care and progress toward cures.
Forty years ago, there was virtually no funding of tinnitus research in the U.S. The ATA stepped in to fill that void when it awarded its first research grant in 1980. Today, it is a key funder for investigators. It is important to note that we are primarily funding small-size seed grants, which generate critical data that can be used to apply for funding from larger agencies. This is a critical niche that has enabled us to have high impact in targeted research for cures and improved treatments.
