You can read the Nook Color in the dark but not the Nook. The Nook looks and feels exactly like a normal book (except for the touch screen!). It is designed to help your eyes and not hurt it like the Nook Color does. If you cannot read a book in the dark, you cannot read the Nook in the dark. Unless you use a booklight!
Please don't erase.....The Nook Color doesn't hurt MY eyes at all. You can read it in the dark or low light conditions because the screen is backlit, or can be flipped to white letters on a black background to make it less disruptive to others around you-like the driver in your car.
I think all things like (computers, TV's, tablets, NOOK COLORS, Ipads, cell phones, etc.) hurt your eyes. You might have a different opinion but this is what I feel. You're welcome to answer some other question of the same topic.

Yes. The E-ink that it uses makes it so that it has no glare, and so is nice and easy to read in the sun. This ink also makes it so that it does not use a backlight. The advantage of this is that it does not use as much power, and so the battery lasts for weeks.
Yes you can but it will not be easy on the eyes like the original kindle or new ones with Paperwhte technology. That's what you give up to get a color, LED back-lit screen and full web-browsing capabilities. Maybe someday a tablet will do both but not yet:(
It is supposed to be read like a book, so you will need some form of light to read it with.
