the condition of the skeletal remains, there was a great deal of post-depositional disturbance evident in the tombs. It seems likely that the tombs were either robbed in antiquity or periodically “reorga- nized” and/or reused within the EB IV period, or that there was repeated flooding. was possible to glean much information about the interred at Khirbat Iskandar from the study of the skeletal remains (Ch. 14). Tomb D2 found lying just inside the chamber. The bench was some 0.50 m above the chamber floor and pottery fragments were found on top. General parallels for the somewhat rare bench may be cited from a tomb at Amman (Zayadine 1978: 60) and one at Khirbat al-Kirmil (Dever 1975: 20). After a brief reconnaissance of Area D in 1987 to identify additional potential tomb locations, the designation D8 was assigned to a flat limestone slab (0.75 x 0.75 m) ly ing in a slight depression in the ground Although the slab appeared to indicate an in-situ tomb capstone, potentially at the upper (or lower) extent of a truncated shaft, excavation revealed that this stone was in fact sitting on bedrock.
