In general Boro and Aman paddy were processed by the selected mills and monthly or seasonal variations were observed in the amount of paddy processed (Fig. 2 and 3). The highest amount of paddy was processed in the Bangla month of ‘Jaisthya’ (mid May to mid June), which was the peak harvesting season of Boro paddy. The total processing of Boro paddy was always higher than the total processing of Aman paddy.

However, DG Food of GoB has listed down some rice mills from where GoB procures rice. A total number of 25,825 rice mills were licensed to DG Food in 2005, but this figure dropped to 23,984 in May 2009 (Table 8). The reasons may be that some of the rice mills are closed or not in operation and some rice mill owners did not renew their license. Since there is no statistical survey, it is very difficult to estimate the total number of rice mills in Bangladesh. It is, however, believed that a large number of rice mills exist which are not licensed and not enlisted with DG Food.
