Die Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung widmet sich derzeit der Aufarbeitung der Geschichte der von Peter und Irene Ludwig zusammengetragenen Sammlung von Kunst aus der DDR sowie der sukzessiven Erschließung der in Hinblick darauf relevanten Bestände im Stiftungsarchiv. In diesem Zusammenhang hat der Workshop „Die Ludwigs und der deutsch-deutsche Austausch von Gegenwartskunst 1974-1990“ das Ziel, die Geschichte und den Kontext dieses Sammlungskomplexes weiter zu beleuchten.

Nel 1616, Giovan Francesco Barbieri detto il Guercino inaugurava l’Accademia del nudo a Cento. In essa, appena venticinquenne impartisce lezioni ai suoi allievi e per coordinare l’attività didattica e le continue richieste dei committenti, codificò un insieme di disegni propedeutici poi diventati incisioni che il maestro emiliano raccolse in un primo manuale sussidiario. Nel corso della sua lunga vita, vedranno la luce tre album con incisioni tutte diverse tra loro. Il presente saggio si propone una prima sistematica schedatura dei sessantadue fogli ivi raccolti. Tuttavia, queste tavole non vengono esaminate solo con gli strumenti della disciplina storico-artistica, ma si è tentata anche una lettura interdisciplinare che coinvolgesse sia la cassetta degli attrezzi della semiotica, sia un approccio simbolico-politico. Sebbene l’oggetto appaia esplicitamente afferente alla storia dell’arte, infatti, ne viene fuori un testo di storia del pensiero: una riflessione, cioè, sugli spazi del disegno, sui potenziali colori, sulle linee, elementari artemi dell’elaborazione pittorica in costruzione e le motivazioni di tali scelte in quel determinato periodo storico-politico. Ed è con tali presupposti che le scelte artistiche del Guercino vanno inserite nella cultura storica e nelle filosofie dominanti che hanno circondato i suoi slanci creativi.

Este artigo procura estudar a influência da obra de Isidore Lucien Ducasse, Conde de Lautréamont na poesia surrealista portuguesa. O estudo deste autor implica um trabalho de pesquisa em textos muitas vezes considerados malditos e proscritos, de poetas cuja obra foi, por várias vicissitudes, afastada do conhecimento geral e da maioria dos leitores. Devido ao teor de perversidade do seu tema e da sua linguagem, das imagens monstruosas, do seu tom fortemente apelativo e de interpelação constante, a obra Cantos de Maldoror foi censurada e a sua leitura proibida. É nosso propósito verificar que a influência existiu, se não de uma forma directa e facilmente identificável, pelo menos através da leitura da obra por parte dos intelectuais portugueses. Nos nossos dias, ultrapassados que estão alguns constrangimentos políticos, culturais, religiosos e sociais, parece agora tempo para que a obra possa por fim ser lida por um maior número de leitores

Abstract: Typomorphic is an experimental calligraphic typeface which is coded with the optical illusion of perspectivic anamorphosis. The characters appear to our eyes as actual fonts only from a certain point of view, whereas from other views they are just dynamically rotating equal width tapes. This typeface works theoretically and virtually exactly the same as in practice. Beside that some of the characters are well readable calligraphic fonts, as spatial constructions they involve the practice of their drawing through adding depth of space. Hereby the sight-shaping rules of the perspective are involved in the process of font design.

This study analyses Ana Hatherly’s (Porto, 1929 – Lisbon, 2015) experimental poetry. She is a multifaceted artist who circulates in the fields of literature, the plastic arts, cinema, and literary criticism. This research initially tries to define the concept of experimental poetry and to delimit a corpus to demonstrate that, despite this designation referring to the international literary phenomenon which arose in the second half of the XX Century, it is hard to define experimental poetry with theoretical rigor. This is partly due to the multiple – almost countless – poetics
which have been thus labelled (Concrete, Visual, Phonetic, Sound, Kinetic, Digital Poetry, Holopoetry, Biopoetry, E-poetry, etc.) in the last decades. Moreover, conventional criticism misunderstands the methods and experimental processes by subsuming different aesthetic manifestations under the same generalising category. Besides, the indiscriminate use of the term experimental renders it imprecise, which is to blame on critics and also on the poets’ hermeticism. Consequently, poetic experimentalism has become an “elastic hypernym”, a huge umbrella wielded by critics, fetishised by the logics of the literary market and by its intrinsic
unfinishedness which flatly rejects fixed conceptual categorizations. Hence, the premise of this research is that unequivocal affirmations about poetic experimentalism are impossible to make, and it takes into account Hatherly’s warning about the contemporary compulsion for signification. Therefore, this study proposes a methodological inversion as the solution to this impasse: it eschews teleologies and totalising theories to demarcate the practices that engender the concept. These practices indicate a notion of immanence of the language and a transcendent
potential in language itself.

RESUMO: A partir de uma noção ampla de poesia experimental, emprestada de poetas como Herberto Helder e Wallace Stevens, este artigo discute as relações entre experiência estética, experimentação e experimentalismo na modernidade. Sustentada pelas leituras de Theodor W. Adorno e Walter Benjamin, a reflexão se faz entre avanços e recuos, de Baudelaire e Rilke, e deles a Mallarmé, para voltar, enfim, ao experimentalismo dos anos 1960 como um movimento tributário da Modernidade do século XIX e como último suspiro das vanguardas no século XX.

Pode ser esta uma possível explicação da sua partida para Paris, numa eventual procura de melhores condições de vida em França. O corso Pierre Marie Cesarini é a razão da existência de uma ligação entre a Póvoa de Varzim e Mário de Cesariny, através da família nortenha do seu tio Caetano Vasques Calafate. Esta relação familiar vai perdurar durante décadas, traduzindo-se em manifestações da mais variada natureza. Na quela que viria a ser a sua última entrevista literária, Mário Cesariny, a propósito da oferta de um Brunello di Montalcino, começa por mencionar a Maria Bochicchio 1 que tem uma origem italiana. De facto, o avô materno, Pierre Marie Cesarini, nasceu a 20 de fevereiro de 1861, em Bastia. O pai, Paul Adonis Cesarini, natural de Santa Reparata di Moriani, e a mãe, Henrietti Rossi, viviam na Rue de Notre Dame, em Bastia, cidade fundada em 1378 pelos genoveses e antiga capital da Córsega. Como todas as ilhas do Mediterrâneo, a Córsega também andou de mão em mão, pertencendo ao reino de Pisa (1077) e ao de Génova (1284-1768), antes de ser vendida à França pelo último. É a quarta maior ilha do Mediterrâneo e as suas fortalezas genovesas são uma atração turística. Bastia situa-se na costa leste e é a segunda maior cidade da ilha. A zona antiga, a Citadela, onde viveu Pierre Cesarini, obedece a princípios urbanísticos rigorosos,

El trabajo se propone explorar un conjunto de representaciones visuales impresas que se produjeron y circularon en los países enfrentados en la Guerra de la Triple Alianza (1865-1870). El estudio de la producción y circulación de imágenes impresas de algunos periódicos producidos especialmente durante el conflicto resulta atractivo por varios motivos: la guerra coincidió con la generalización de algunos adelantos técnicos vinculados con la reproducción de la imagen, fue uno de los grandes momentos informativos internacionales en América del Sur, puso en cuestión los conceptos de nación y región, y exhibió cómo los periódicos desplegaron retóricas verbales y visuales diferenciadas. La segunda parte del trabajo se detiene en el caso de la prensa paraguaya ilustrada.

Before the advent of photography and its photomechanical reproduction recipes had only rarely been accompanied by pictures. However, from around 1900 the common imagery of food stuffs and kitchen utensils is supplemented by visualizations of cooked dishes as well as step-by-step photographs of food preparation. Whereas the recipe has been thoroughly studied as a pertinent text type or as an indicator of eating habits, its relation to pictures has received little scholarly attention. On a theoretical level this article will discuss, how the recipe can accommodate pictures, going beyond the hierarchized concept of ‘illustration.’ By looking at various examples across the history of cooking publications, dating from 1896 to the present,
the evolution of the photographic recipe picture will be traced in order to elaborate, how in the course of this development the photographic recipe picture changes from an instructive image to a sensory evocation of a dish that is mainly designed to be pictorially indulged.

USC/RAE principios del siglo siguiente al de las Luces en que escribió Lessing el Laooconte, en plena irrupción del comparatismo en los diferentes apartados del saber, Sobry publicó un Cours de peinture et littérature comparées (1810). Pero será un discípulo del gran historiador del Arte Heinrich Wölfflin, Oskar Walzel, quien en una conferencia programática de 1917 acuñe la expresión que mejor refleja esta modalidad comparatística: «la iluminación recíproca de las artes» («Wechselseitige Erhellung der Künste»), fórmula afortunada a la que ha acompañado también la noción de los «talentos dobles», los creadores que como Miguel Angel, Blake, Hoffmann, Wagner, Rossetti, Almada Negreiros, Dalí, Pier Paolo Pasolini o Federico García Lorca Lorca, se han expresado, además de literaria, plástica, musical o cinematográficamente, demostrando así, según Kurt Wais, la Symbiose der Künste (1936). Poco antes de la citada conferencia, Walzel había comenzado a trasladar a la literatura las categorías del Barroco y el Renacimiento que Wölfflin había definido en su libro sobre los conceptos fundamentales en la historia del arte, Kunstgeschichtliche Grundbegriffe, publicado en 1915. Resulta obligado radicar en la facultad universal del lenguaje, y en su uso estético que constituye la literatura, el fundamento y origen de la disciplina de la Literatura comparada. Cierto es, asimismo, que en la base de todas las artes está el principio aristotélico de la mimesis, pues la naturaleza humana se nos revela esencialmente mimética. Todas imitan y el objeto de su mimesis es el mismo: la realidad natural y la realidad humana. Pero cada una de ellas lo hace con instrumentos diferentes. Y es aquí donde encontramos de nuevo la razón de ser de los estudios interartísticos como ámbito privilegiado de la Literatura Comparada. El que en esta disciplina tenga cabida no solo la comparación entre la literatura escrita en una lengua y las escritas en otras sino también el estudio de las relaciones entre el arte de la palabra y las demás artes encuentra, asimismo, su razón de ser en la imitación. Refuerza esta universalidad del comparatismo interartístico otro principio aristotélico, el de la catarsis, relacionado con la dimensión psicológica del fenómeno estético, con la emotividad del receptor de la artística y los efectos que esta provoca.

本文以傳説中的驅鬼神祗鍾馗為基礎，解讀華盛頓史密森學會弗利爾美術館收藏的龔開《中山出遊圖》為一件隱性的自傳性作品，結合繪畫與題跋，抒發他在易代之際不能為國除凶的感觸。作爲元初的宋遺民，龔開要驅除的鬼魅是仗勢欺壓漢人的異族，并不限於主政的蒙古人。他在繪畫和題跋中自我指涉，賦予鍾馗嶄新的形象和生平，呼應自己在宋末元初的特殊經歷。畫中影射的兩件時事透露他對穆斯林和藏僧的反感：1276年冬穆斯林蒲壽庚在泉州給復興宋室大業致命的一擊，1285年藏傳佛教領袖楊璉真加在紹興發掘南宋帝后陵寢。畫中的鍾馗一反傳統神勇形象，神態戒慎收斂，反映龔開委屈認命於異族統治下嚴酷的新現實。

Estas duas actividades estão de tal modo interligadas que se pode dizer que a compreensão de uma passa necessariamente pelo conhecimento da outra. De uma forma semelhante, também na sua obra, poesia e teoria comunicam e informam-se mutuamente. Este aspecto está próximo da poeprática do grupo de que fez parte-e cuja ligação com a teoria e a crítica literárias fica bem patente em vários dos seus trabalhos. Os interesses teóricos da autora são, no entanto, variados, reflectindo não só sobre a Teoria da Informação e o Estruturalismo, mas também sobre as relações entre a Estética e a Filosofia. Durante o auge da produção concretista portuguesa, em 1965, Tavares leccionou Estética na Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, tendo publicado as lições correspondentes, sem ilustrações, na revista Brotéria. Um livro com essas mesmas lições, mas completas, intitulado "A dialéctica das formas", estava composto em 1972, mas foi rejeitado pela editora Livros Horizonte. Por outro lado, a sua obra poética deve ser entendida no âmbito de uma vanguarda literária. Podemos adiantar duas razões que justificam esta classificação: primeiro, a ênfase dada aos valores expressivos da materialidade da linguagem; segundo, um sentido de constante vigilância, que a colocam no âmbito das poéticas auto-reflexivas. Estes aspectos são, entretanto, informados por uma busca da invenção e do novo. De salientar também é o seu interesse pela música contemporânea, principalmente pela articulação entre som e silêncio, proposta nos trabalhos de John Cage, nos Estados Unidos, e Pierre Schaeffer, em França, cujas obras permitiram o início do estudo do som como entidade autónoma da música. O silêncio, no caso de Cage, e os "barulhos" do quotidiano, no caso de Schaeffer, passam a ser parte constituinte das unidades significantes com que interpretamos a música, da mesma forma que, na escultura, Marcel Duchamp introduz o objecto encontrado (objet trouvé) na configuração artística. É esta polifonia de influências, abertamente expostas e admitidas por Salette Tavares, que acompanha a sua produção poética.

Questo lavoro mira a dimostrare come le procedure di equivalenza, paragone, riformulazione, e connettività figural-concettuale in generale fondino il pensare e lo scrivere anniniano, dando luogo a testi non solo visionari e deformanti, ma anche dalla forte componente dianoetica, cioè di pensiero – di un pensiero definitorio e comparativo nella fattispecie. Oltre che consustanziali alla sua poetica e al suo stile, queste procedure si fanno per Annino spunto di intuizione metapoetica: lo suggeriscono passi quali «nelle | lenti d’ingrandimento dei paragoni» (L’estinzione del lirico coniglio, vv. 74-75, MD, p. 77), «e tutto finalmente si somigli » (Madrid, vv. 7-8, MD, p. 78), e «coi paragoni | ingrandisce anche un nano» (Paglia a volo con Céline, vv. 17-18, CE, p. 34).

The decision to include a chapter on 'material culture' in a Critical Guide to Latin Literature bears witness to a fundamental truth: without 'material culture' there would be no 'Latin literature' to speak of. 1 The study of Latin is predicated on a series of physical survivals. Sometimes, albeit comparatively rarely, Latin texts are transmitted on scraps of ancient papyrus rolls or early parchment codices. 2 More often, they are preserved through Carolingian, later mediaeval and Renaissance manuscriptsthat is, by scribes who copy a text from one material context to another, thereby providing a principal source for later printed editions. 3 At other times, Latin texts come to us via epigraphic means 4whether inscribed as grand monumental declarations in stone, marble or metal (consider Augustus' Res gestae, which survives only epigraphically), 5 or else as wholly

This paper explores the relationship between the words and images in the drawing Interior, Lavender Bay by the Australian artist Brett Whiteley (1939-1992). This artwork combines the depiction of the artist’s home with a written element composed of the title, date, artist’s monogram, and a brief inscription. By examining Whiteley’s use of words and images in this drawing, the verbal/visual synergy that underpins his language is emphasized as a key aspect of his communicative appeal. The interpretive lens used in order to analyze Interior, Lavender Bay is interlingual translation. Translating Whiteley’s words from English into Italian allows not only to decipher the literal meaning and comprehend the symbolic function of his words, but also to highlight the relation between art and language. From this perspective, drawing on W. J. T. Mitchell’s Picture Theory (1994), the paper aims to discuss the functioning of images and the way in which interlingual translation might bring out late...

Specchi barocchi: la dispersione dell'eterno femminino Dall'archetipo femminile cinquecentesco alle donne del don Juan Intento del presente lavoro è un'analisi del rapporto di accettazione/ ricusazione dell'eredità rinascimentale da parte del barocco relativamente al tema specifico dell'eterno femminino o della donna angelicata. In particolare, il passaggio dall'immagine femminile in Juan Boscán, Garcilaso e Hernando de Acuña, fino ad arrivare alla galleria di donne del don Juan. A tal fine è necessario produrre una definizione soddisfacente del concetto di archetipo femminile in riferimento al Rinascimento, una definizione che sia anche genealogica. L'eterno femminino cinquecentesco, reperibile nei tre autori suddetti, è sintesi di almeno tre filoni ereditari: da un lato, proviene dall'eredità petrarchesca del dolce stilnovo; dall'altro, raccoglie in modo nuovo un'eredità trobadorica-alla quale lo stilnovismo aveva attinto a sua volta-; infine, è riconoscibile un filone di eredità araba, reperibile nelle jarchas e nel Romancero viejo, che in questa sede non analizzeremo.

Drawing on Zhong Kui's legendary identity as a demon queller, this study suggests that Gong Kai (1222-1307) created a veiled autobiographical work, Zhongshan Going on Excursion in the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC, that combines painting and inscription to project his unfulfilled aspiration to clear the nation of destructive evils. The demons to be expelled in his life as a Song patriot living into the Mongol Yuan were the powerful and abusive ethnic others, not limited to the ruling Mongols. Conflating himself with Zhong Kui by constructing a new, self-referential biography and image of the demon queller, Gong Kai conveyed his xenophobia during the dynastic transition through two topical allusions, the Muslim merchant-official Pu Shougeng's fatal blow to the Song revivalist cause in Quanzhou in late 1276 and the Tibetan Buddhist leader Yang Lianzhenjia's desecration of Song imperial tombs in Shaoxing in 1285. In the painting, Gong Kai confesses his resignation to the brutal new realities under alien rule by portraying Zhong Kui in an uncharacteristically subdued demeanor.

Cruzamentos entre palavra e imagem em três momentos da arte brasileira Crossovers between Word and Image in Three Moments of Brazilian Art Cruces entre palabra y imagen en tres momentos del arte brasileño Este artigo aborda o cruzamento entre palavra e visualidade em três momentos da arte brasileira: Concretismo, Neoconcretismo e Nova Objetividade Brasileira. De um primeiro momento em que se busca a identidade entre palavra e imagem de modo predominantemente óptico passa-se a outro em que essa identidade está na dimensão simbólica da palavra identificada com o corpo e o espaço, tornando-se háptica, e chega-se a um terceiro em que palavra e imagem instauram uma relação de contiguidade, metonímica, que mobiliza o contexto que as inscreve numa rede de significações e relações de poder. É traçada, a partir do conceito de "participação semântica" (1967), de Hélio Oiticica, uma mudança de paradigma na relação entre palavra e imagem.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate why Catholic theology should actively engage with artistic images and elucidate how they could serve as a valuable resource for theological knowledge and content. The discussion is articulated in three distinct steps. Firstly, drawing from theological-historical perspectives within Christian tradition, it is shown that certain images possess significant theological potential. There have been various forms of interaction between theology and the visual representation of faith. The second step discusses the gradual reduction of theological reflection towards rational and conceptual cognition. The author relies predominantly on inner-theological arguments to advocate for the necessity of expanding the intellectual and conceptual horizons of contemporary Catholic theology so as to include the aesthetic dimension. In the final, third part, these insights are substantiated through the examination of two examples from contemporary Catholic theology: the works of Alex Stock and Peter Hofmann, exploring how artistic images can enrich systematic theology by serving as a “locus theologicus”. In conclusion, the author asserts that images have the potential to expand and concretize abstracted topics within dogmatic theology. They can also facilitate the reintegration of fragmented theological disciplines and forge a more direct link between theology and the lived experience of faith.

My research investigates the relationship between context and the interpretation of signs within 'scripto/visual' communication processes. I focus on the belief that no interpretation is context free. I have experienced that context is not consistent as it is based on the cultural, social and personal backgrounds of each individual. As there is always a context that serves to anchor the sign to our experiences, we construct a specific meaning when we interpret a sign. This specific meaning is, however, not necessarily the one originally intended by the sender. Central to my project is the argument that the choices made which affect the interpretation of signs when encoding and decoding them are influenced by the context of both the sender and the receiver, as well as the specific context within which the exchange takes place. I have chosen, amongst many other modes of sign interpretation, the operational processes of similarity and association. I investigate why both of these processes, in relation to the unfixed nature of context, are problematic and result in miscommunication. I have chosen to include discussions on specific artworks by two South African artists: Joni Brenner and Willem Boshoff as I feel that both artists make work in response to the fact that interpretation does not produce a 'fixed truth'.

This article investigates questions of readership, pricing and visual literacy by relating eighteenth-century illustrated chapbook abridgements of Samuel Richardson's Pamela (1740) to the author's 1742 edition, featuring illustrations by Hubert-François Gravelot and Francis Hayman. It focuses on the affordability of chapbook abridgements and the straightforward readability of their illustrations, which would have been accessible to many readers. While few readers would have had access, financially, to the Gravelot-Hayman de luxe edition, Pamela chapbooks reached larger groups of readers and shaped the text's popular reception.

An overview of the one-day conference "La ricerca del vero. Ricordando Agostino Lom­bardo", a tribute to renowned scholar Agostino Lombardo on the 10th anniversary of his death (6 February 2015). The contribution focuses on the talks delivered by fellow aca­demics whose moving recollections of the man and his work merge with their own reflections on the artist's identity in general.

We investigate Cy Twombly's paths up to the constitution of a writing that became a signature. In the development of his poetics, we highlight, as relevant references, his Black Mountain College professors-Charles Olson, Robert Motherwell and John Cageand his friend Robert Rauschenberg. The scripture in Twombly is approached from several theoretical references, with emphasis on Roland Barthes" notions, although we do not neglect to consider the semantic implications of this writing. We seek precisely to show the ambiguous relations between chance and control, and between sense and non sense present in Twombly"s enigmatic work. Mary Jacobus, who shows us a scholarly and politically engaged Twombly, is the main reference in the relation of the artist to literature. We also try to inscribe Twombly's work according to the changes in the artistic imaginary, explaining its affinities with several contemporary artists. We also highlight his conflicting relationship with American criticism, investigating the reasons for his unimpressive recognition in America, compared to his acceptance by the critics of European art, in particular French.

A obra de Pedro da Silva Nava (1903-1984) fornece incomparavel panorama sobre o seculo XX no Brasil. Este artigo examina mencoes a escrita em Bau de Ossos (1972), no contexto cultural brasileiro do inicio do novecentos. Com base no conceito de ut pictura poesis , o objetivo do estudo e mostrar que Pedro Nava aludiu ao aspecto grafico da escrita cursiva, palavra escrita e signos em espaco publico, com enfoque estetico, lirismo e humor, em episodios de memorias de infância e perfis biograficos. A analise indica que ele considerou os estilos de caligrafia recursos de interacao social, expressao artistica e psicologica.

Il presente contributo si propone di far luce sul modo in cui Michelangelo, nell’età della riforma religiosa, dialogò con le Sacre Scritture mediante un’analisi dei versi spirituali, degli schizzi verbali e visivi e delle relative opere scultoree che realizzò nei primi decenni del Cinquecento. Innanzitutto, si prendono in considerazione i primi fogli autografi di Michelangelo, esaminando le modalità in cui scritti e immagini formano giustapposizioni enigmatiche. Sono fogli che testimoniano dei primi tentativi poetici dell’autore e dell’importanza che questi attribuiva alla Bibbia e alla preghiera. Attraverso un’analisi dei sonetti “S’un casto amor, s’una pietà superna” e “Vorrei voler, Signor, quel ch’io non voglio,” si esamina in seguito come Michelangelo utilizzò la Bibbia, rispettivamente, come fonte letteraria e come strumento di devozione. Rilevando come il poeta, in questi sonetti, tras- ponga in poesia riprese lessicali provenienti dal Nuovo Testamento, si può anche dimostrare come fosse un attento lettore della Bibbia di Brucioli.

The premise of the approach in the present paper is the interpretation of Japanese calligraphy as an artistic act and the reception of the calligraphic work of art as the object of the aesthetic relation. By combining the theoretical analysis of the main artistic functions of calligraphy –as both a representative and an expressive art – with the practice of calligraphic art, the present endeavour aims to identify the factual and artistic poetics of this visual (pictorial) and verbal art. As such, our study focuses on the particularities of the calligraphic work of art, given by its means of existence: its object of immanence is concurrently a physical and an ideal object (through its linguistic scriptural contents).
