Wild Dogs

Dingoes and other wild dogs cause substantial damage and control expense in many Australian environments. The main methods of control are exclusion fencing, poisoning with 1080, and trapping. Strategies to mitigate livestock predation by wild dogs include; enterprise substitution, the reduction of wild dog populations, and baited buffer zones between wild dog country and sheep country. Damage functions show significant positive relationships between density indices and the losses caused by predation for both sheep and cattle enterprises. However, descriptive and explanatory models fitted the data poorly. A strategic approach to the management of wild dogs that aims to reduce predation on livestock while allowing the conservation of wild living dingoes is also outlined.

Management actions designed to mitigate development or anthropogenic impacts on species of conservation concern are often implemented without quantifying the benefit to the species. It is often unclear what combinations and intensities of management actions are required to achieve meaningful conservation outcomes. We investigate whether disease and predator control can reverse population declines of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). Based on longitudinal monitoring of the epidemiological and demographic status of over 500 animals over 4 years, coupled with an intensive disease and predator management programme, we use survival analyses to estimate annual age‐specific survival rates and population growth, and simulations to quantify the benefit of these actions. The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is a canidae widely distributed in South America. Due to the constant and accelerated urban growth, these animals have become the target of automobile accidents. The trauma caused by these accidents can have several consequences for the animal, making it a multi-trauma patient and even lead him to death. An young male crab-eating fox, weighing 4,900 kg, delivered by IBAMA at Preservas UFRGS with suspected run-over. After physical evaluations and complementary examinations, the animal was diagnosed with diaphragmatic hernia, ischial fracture, coxofemoral luxation and cranioencephalic trauma. Surgeries of diaphragmatic herniorrhaphy and cephalectomy were performed, and clinical treatment was performed for the other alterations. The animal remains in the Preservas, still under medical supervision, and when possible, will be destined for release or to some zoo or maintainer of wild fauna.

Los perros domésticos (Canis familiaris) tienen una distribución cosmopolita y han acompañado al hombre por más de 15.000 años, y si bien dependen de los humanos, la falta de control o cuidado a estos animales en áreas periurbanas y rurales los han transformado en animales asilvestrados. Son numerosos los reportes negativos de estos animales hacia la vida silvestre nativa, por ejemplo, la transmisión de enfermedades o la depredación sobre especies nativas pequeñas. En este trabajo se presentan algunas observaciones sobre las interacciones de perros domésticos con el cóndor y el zorro andino y adicionalmente se reportan conflictos ocasionados por los perros domésticos entre depredadores nativos (zorro y puma) y la gente local. Palabras clave: Andes, áreas protegidas, conflictos, depredación, interacción entre carnívoros.

Sé que lo que viene sonará, para muchos, como una herejía, como una salvajada o como una locura. Por supuesto sé también en qué terrenos pantanosos me estoy metiendo. El simple hecho de deslizar por ahí que, en circunstancias especiales, es necesario matar perros (u otros animales), puede generar que (yo) sea visto, sin duda alguna, como un ser insensible e inhumano. Pero señoras y señores, me estoy refiriendo a tener que mandar a la otra vida a perros que ya no son más domésticos y que se han convertido en perros asilvestrados (semi salvajes) o silvestres (salvajes). En algunos lugares, los caninos que fueron poco a poco alejándose del que lo considera su mejor amigo -es decir, del hombre-se han convertido en una amenaza para algunos animales silvestres. Por eso, algo debemos hacer al respecto.
