Teaching German As a Foreign Language

Im ersten Teil zeichnet die Arbeit den veränderten Stellenwert von literarischen Texten im Fremdsprachenunterricht seit den 1970er Jahren nach, um dann zahlreiche Überlegungen der Rezeptionsästhetik (vor allem von Bredella, Ehlers, Heyd) zu einem fremdsprachlichen Literaturunterricht, in dem es immer auch um interkulturelles Verstehen geht, zusammenzufassen und gegenüberzustellen. Dabei behält der Autor dieser Arbeit stets die Möglichkeiten des Umgangs mit Literatur im DaF-Unterricht im Blick.
Schließlich werden unterschiedliche kreative Verfahren vorgestellt, die auf eine intensive Auseinandersetzung zwischen fremdsprachigem Leser und dem Text abzielen. Die Lehrperson /der DaF-Lernende kann mit diesen produkt-, persönlichkeits- und prozessorientierten Ansätzen einer oberflächlichen Rezeption entgegenwirken.
Der zweite Teil beschreibt und begründet ausführlich die einzelnen Schritte der Planung einer längeren Unterrichtseinheit (u.a. Lernerinnengruppe, Lernziele, Sozialform, pre-reading, reading/listening, post-reading activities). Für den Unterrichtsversuch wurde das Märchen Fundevogel von Grimm und die moderne Version von Härtling ausgesucht. Interessierten werden kreative Arbeitsformen in die Hand gegeben, um selbst Literatur im Fremdsprachenunterricht einsetzen zu können. Am Ende der Arbeit stehen die Auswertung der Lerneraktivitäten nach ihrem Einsatzort im Unterricht, eine orientierende Unterrichtsskizze sowie ein Anlagenverzeichnis mit Mindmaps, Aufgabenblättern, Textpuzzle, Motivraster und einer zeichnerischen Umsetzung des Grimmschen Märchens.

Z głębokim żalem żegnamy Pana Krzysztofa Gołdę, wieloletniego i nieocenionego redaktora Wydawnictwa Naukowego Uniwersytetu Szczecińskiego, wielkiego erudytę, który zawsze z ogromnym zaangażowaniem i największą starannością redagował nie tylko nasze Zeszyty Naukowe "Colloquia Germanica Stetinensia", ale także wiele innych publikacji germanistycznych.

Die hier präsentierten 12 Kurzfilme wurden vor allem unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Lernerorientiertheit ausgewählt, d.h. nicht nur nach linguistischen Kriterien, sondern ebenfalls nach thematischen. Von besonderem Interesse erschienen uns gerade solche Filme, die sowohl aufgrund ihrer thematischen Aktualität als auch ihres teilweise polemischen Inhalts interessante Debatten und Diskussionen im Klassenraum zu wecken versprachen. Zu den ausgewählten Themen gehören zum Beispiel der Alkoholkonsum, die Unterdrückung des Stärkeren durch den Schwächeren, die Globalisierung, die Einsamkeit, Eile und Intoleranz, die Bedeutung von Liebe und Geld, der Phantasie,
des Aussehens sowie, nicht zuletzt, des Sexs in der heutigen Gesellschaft.
Jede Didaktikeinheit enthält Unterrichtsvorschläge zu einem der insgesamt 12 Kurzfilme und ist jeweils in drei Phasen unterteilt: eine Kontextualisierungs-, eine Entwicklungs- und eine Konsolidierungsphase.
Die Kontextualisierungsphase besteht aus einer Reihe kürzerer Aktivitäten, deren Ziel es ist, die Aufmerksamkeit der Lerner zu gewinnen und einen gewissen Erwartungshorizont bezüglich der
nachfolgenden Aktivitäten aufzubauen. Im Mittelpunkt der Entwicklungsphase steht hingegen die allmähliche Annäherung an die
thematischen Aspekte des Kurzfilmes. Dazu gehört sowohl die Revision zuvor präsentierter Meinungen, als auch die Hypothesenbildung bezüglich der dargestellten Konflikte. Auf diese beiden ersten Phasen folgt schliesslich die Konsolidierungsphase. In ihr sollte es
vornehmlich darum gehen, zuvor diskutierte Aspekte wieder aufzugreifen, mit dem Ziel diese aber nun auf eine dem Lerner vertraute Wirklichkeitsebene zu übertragen.
Allen Materialien gemeinsam ist darüber hinaus, dass sie sich an DaF-Studenten mit Al bis C1 Kenntnissen richten. Es handelt sich folglich (mit Ausnahme von C1) um eine Zielgruppe, deren
Deutschkenntnisse noch sehr begrenzt sind, weshalb wir uns darum bemüht haben, sowohl die Arbeitsanweisungen als auch die Aktivitäten als solche in sprachlicher wie grammatikalischer Hinsicht so einfach wie möglich zu halten; sie wurden mit besonderer Berücksichtigung auf das Vokabular und die den Lernern bis dahin vertrauten Strukturen ausgearbeitet.
Eingeleitet wird jede Didaktikeinheit durch eine Kurzfilmbeschreibung. Dort finden sie Angaben zum Inhalt, Titel, Regisseur, Drehjahr- und ort sowie zur Dauer und empfohlenen Zielgruppe.
Die Arbeitsanweisungen jeder Didaktikeinheit richten sich in erster Linie an den Lerner. Sie stellen einen Arbeitsplan dar und sollten von diesem zu Beginn jeder Aktivität den Sprachkenntnissen der Lerner entsprechend umformuliert und -wenn nötig- noch weiter vereinfacht werden. Auf die Arbeitsanweisungen folgen die für den Unterricht vorgesehenen Kopiervorlagen, welche die einzelnen Aktivitäten begleiten. Mit dem Ziel dem Dozenten die Vorbereitungsarbeiten so weit wie möglich zu erleichtern, wurden die Arbeitsblätter nicht nur kopierfertig vorbereitet, sondern darüber hinaus auch mit allen erforderlichen Informationen hinsichtlich ihres Einsatzes versehen: 1 Kopie pro Gruppe, 1 Folie für Overheadprojektor,..., etc.
Abschliessend sei noch daran erinnert, dass das vorliegende Material primär für die Arbeit im Unterricht konzipiert ist, d.h. für die Arbeit unter der Leitung der Lehrerin oder des Lehrers, nicht aber zum autonomen Lernen. Trotzdem sollte man aber nicht vergessen, dass sein Hauptziel sein sollte Lernerinnen und Lerner für die eigene Beschäftigung mit deutschen Filmen -kurzen oder langen- zu motivieren.

Abstrakt Im heutigen Fremdsprachenunterricht hat die Fertigkeit Sprechen nach wie vor Vorrang. Die Fähigkeit, sich bei der Kommunikation richtig zu verhalten und sich verbal auszudrücken, ist immer noch das erwünschte Ziel in vielen Fremdsprachenunterrichten im Ausland. Dieser Wunsch dominiert auch bei der Planung und Umsetzung des Deutschunterrichts in der Deutschabteilung an der Fakultät der Kulturwissenschaften, der Universitas Indonesia. Diese Arbeit basiert auf die Erfahrung, die ich während meiner Tätigkeit als Dozentin im Seminar "Menulis dan Berbicara Bahasa Jerman" (wortwörlich übersetzt: Schreiben und Sprechen auf Deutsch) und "Telaah Teks Bahasa Jerman (wortwörtlich übersetzt: Analyse der deutschen Texte) gemacht habe. Die beiden Seminare sind als Begleitseminar für den Sprachunterricht (Hauptseminar: Sprache III und Sprache IV) gedacht und befassen sich mit vielen Praxisübungen im Schreiben und Sprechen in der deutschen Sprache. Da sowohl in dem Hauptseminar als auch in dem Begleitseminar die Zielfertigkeiten nicht so klar definiert sind, halte ich es für wichtig, dass die beiden Seminare eine klare Trennung haben, was von den Studenten verlangt wird. Ich beschränke mich hierbei auf die Fertigkeit Sprechen. Die angebotenen Begleitseminare können meiner Ansicht nach ein motivierender und sicherer "Spielplatz" für die Studenten sein, in dem sie sich einen Überblick zwischen der deutschen und indonesischen Kultur verschaffen können. While the production of lexical abbreviations in German is nothing new, there has probably been no other time quite like today in which all the possibilities of this process of word formation have been used. Knowledge of different types of lexical reduction is of great importance, above all for university students and researchers who want to play an active role in academic discourse in German-speaking countries; this is because lexical shortenings and graphical abbreviations permeate academic-scientific texts, across all areas of specialisation. Given that teaching materials still need to be better integrated, to confront in a more detailed manner the nature, structure and efficiency of this type of formation, the following article will aim to present an overview of the most useful lexical abbreviations for German for academic purposes. In the same way, certain necessary pedagogical considerations will be included, which contribute to the achievement by students of linguistic awareness in the use of such abbreviations.

Discutimos aqui duas plataformas eletrônicas usadas para o ensino de alemão, em combinação com materiais didáticos em suporte convencional (livro e CD). O projeto dá continuidade a uma longa tradição de pesquisa por soluções que atendam adequadamente as necessidades específicas de um público universitário, em contexto de aprendizagem de língua estrangeira (e não de segunda língua). A análise concreta remete a dois cursos intensivos oferecidos em fevereiro de 2008, com continuidade prevista até o final de 2009. Averiguamos os prós e contras de cada abordagem, como hipóteses de trabalho a serem confirmadas ao longo do processo em curso.

The phenomenon of gender neutrality in the German language has been a subject of linguistic observation since a few decades. This topic is still seen as controversial because of its specific, feministic character. The main aim of the given MA thesis is to find out, to what extent German language learners are able to apply gender-neutral German language. Moreover, it is important to examine not only the situation among language learners, but also German teachers. The aim is to examine, to what extent German teachers teach gender-neutral German in their classes and what attitude they present towards the very topic. The empirical research of the given MA thesis enables the examination of that phenomenon which then should show how is the situation in German as a foreign language classes when it comes to applying gender-neutral German.

Films – my window to the German speaking world. Considerations on the possibilities for stimulation of intercultural dialogue in GfL-classes by using films It is an undisputed fact that watching films is a great way to learn a foreign language in context and to be exposed to real life conversations, new vocabulary , etc. Foreign language films also provide a diverse cultural experience as they often focus on various current social aspects, politics as well as history. Therefore, film is a useful tool to help people who learn foreign languages achieve a high level of competences, which are essential to successful communication. A film canon would be here of great assistance both to teachers as well as learners. The aim of this paper is to discuss the existing German film canon and also to present the results of a research project conducted at the Adam-Mickiewicz-University (Poznań, Poland) with German Philology students that justify the need to create a film canon for the purpose of teaching and learning of German as a foreign language.

This paper aims to presents some exemplary LSP (languages for specific purpose) teaching techniques on the university level in order to meet the challenges of the present-day job market situation and corporate environment. First, the article provides an overview of the current situation and demands for candidates with foreign languages skills on the market for modern business services in Poland and the local job market of Łódź. Then, it presents examples of specialised languages teaching techniques, which focus on the training of the textual sub-competence in corporate environment.

It is without doubt, that most contemporary methods of language teaching are based on the Communicative language Teaching (CLT) model. The principle that these methods share is that language can only be considered meaningful when it is not taught separately from its context, which is the context of the target language speakers. In other words, second and foreign language teachers are encouraged to pursue methods of instruction that seek to simultaneously improve not only the linguistic knowledge of the L2/foreign language learners (such as vocabulary and grammar) but also their learning of the "appropriate" contextual meaning of this knowledge. To mention a few, these methods include the integrated content and language learning instruction (ICLI), theme based language instruction (TBI), Task based instruction (TBI) and the integrated language and culture Instruction (ILCI). The last method of instruction which is the central subject of discussion in this study is not commonly addressed by most researchers despite its growing popularity in most foreign language teaching classrooms. It is mainly related to the theme based language instruction since it advocates for the teaching of language in tandem with topics in culture and civilisation and realises the importance of both culture (as content) and language (as a medium of communication). This study unpacks this method, looking at its benefits and limitations when it comes to its application to the foreign language classroom. The major concern of this study therefore, is pedagogical implications of this method in actual foreign language teaching. To illustrate this, the study gives insights into learning of German in Zimbabwe, with the University of Zimbabwe as a close example. The underlying position in this study is that, while the integrated language and culture Instruction (ILCI) method is a very attractive method on paper, there are a number of obstacles that can censor its practical application. These include (among others), complications arising from language learning material (mainly textbooks) and institutional course structure that maintains language and culture as two parallel structures.

The paper discusses the question of creative writing in business language teaching, using the example of writing fairy tales about taxes. For learners who do not have previous knowledge of the subject and need to acquire a similar level of expertise and vocabulary simultaneously, creative writing in language classes can increase learning efficiency and motivation, facilitate the cognitive processing of complex, complicated content, and integrate newly  acquired (language) skills and expertise into the individual’s thinking processes.

Despite efforts to integrate all levels of foreign language (FL) instruction, reading remains on the periphery of beginning language study.  Reading extended texts is outcast to an even greater degree.  This article addresses this issue by presenting the design, results, and implications from a study involving beginning college-level language students who read a 142-page romance novel in their first semester of German.  During the semester, the treatment group (N = 27) followed the same standard first-semester syllabus as the comparison group (N = 32), but replaced all standard reading assignments in the textbook with daily in-class readings of the romance novel.  The effects of the treatment were assessed on the basis of the two groups’ results on a) three departmental exams and b) a pretest and posttest consisting of written recall protocols of four texts and vocabulary-related questions.  A statistical analysis of these two measures yielded two central findings.  First, students were able to read a full-length authentic text in the first semester.  Second, the treatment group performed as well as the comparison group on the three department tests and the posttest, which runs counter to arguments that time spent in class reading adversely affects beginning language learners’ second language (L2) development.  Curricular and pedagogical implications of these findings are discussed.

Translation process is an irreplaceable activity which brings
societies and individuals together and ensures all kinds of dialogues or
communication among them in our day. In view of improving the quality
of translation, the importance of translation criticism is an undisputable
fact.
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar takes his place among the leading figures
of Turkish Literature over the recent era not only with his works but also
with his personality, life style and his rich cultural background lying
behind. In our study we examined “Seelenfrieden”, which is the German
translation by Christoph K. Neumann of the novel “Huzur” which is
defined as his first long prose writing and which displays his poetic
character best. German translation of ”Huzur” written by Ahmet Hamdi
Tanpınar has been analysed by a comparative and descriptive method in
line with the principles of literary work criticism, and discussed in the
light of scientific literature, which is the subject of our study.
This study attempts to achieve a description of how an original
literary product in Turkish is transferred into German language and an
assessment of such transfer approaches, in addition, efforts have been
made to explain to what extent knowledge of field, of the subject matter
and language could be blended with creativity and then used, which are
the qualities that every translator needs to have.
At the end of our study, we observed that the translator we
examined adopted a target language-oriented approach in general and
while translating from the source language to the target language, he
primarily grounded on the culture of the target language. As the work of
art we have examined here is a literary work, we highlighted that the
content and the form are integrated in the translation of such literary
works and the translation should be made without preferring one to
another.

In dieser Arbeit werden die 2002 und 2005 benutzten 224 Wahlplakate der sechs deutschen politischen Parteien (SPD: 42, Grüne: 46, CDU: 44, FDP: 38, CSU:
16, PDS: 39) untersucht, welche bei den Bundestagswahlen 2005 die Fünfpro-
zenthürde erreichten, was ihnen die Vertretung im Deutschen Bundestag si- cherte. Die Plakate sind der „Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung”, den Inter- netseiten der einzelnen Parteien und Portalen wie „Parteien Online” entnommen. Die Texte und Slogans dieser Wahlplakate wurden einer sprachlichen Untersu- chung unterzogen und dementsprechend gruppiert. Es wird versucht zu bestim- men, inwieweit sie geeignet sind, als Lehrmaterial für Deutsch als Fremdsprache Anwendung zu finden. Zu diesem Zweck werden das sprachinhaltliche Inventar ermittelt, der Wortschatz und die Satzarten klassifiziert sowie qualitativ und quantitativ festgehalten, welche Wörter und Aussagen anhand der mit dem vor- handenen Material realisierbaren Aktivitäten seitens der Lernenden erworben werden können. Außerdem werden die thematischen Inhalte der Plakate heraus- gearbeitet und mögliche Aktivitäten bestimmt, welche zur Förderung der sprach- lichen Fertigkeiten und zur kulturellen Transaktion dienen könnten. Darauf fol- gen, anhand von neun ausgewählten und didaktisierten Wahlplakaten, Vorschlä- ge zur Konkretisierung, also zur Umsetzung der Theorie in die Praxis.

Translation process is an inevitable activity, which brings societies
and individuals together in our day and which helps to start all kinds of
dialogues or communication among them. Through this activity that
dates far back to the existence of the mankind we enjoy the opportunity
to follow what is happening all over the world, scientific, technological
and other developments closely, to get to know cultural products and we
have the chance to introduce our culture, the works of art written in our
own language and bring them into their use, as well.
The history of translation has been known since the existence of
the mankind. For an individual, in a foreign world, the obligation to learn
his own language to survive and to communicate with others in his
society has also become valid at intercommunal level.
Translation activity that has been an inevitable part of life of the
mankind and communities throughout history, has gained a new
dimension and become a science upon the change of the world order in
the 20th century due to the wars and because transnational and
intercultural communication has become an obligatory.
In this study, the act of translation, an essential activity which
closes the communities and the individuals and enables to establish all
kinds of dialogues or communications between them today and the
research carried out in the field of translation science have been dealt
with. The study conveys all the research conducted by many local and
foreign scientists who are regarded significant in the field of translation
science from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the
theories presented by them and their propositions related to how a better
translation can be achieved.

Einerseits wurde die pragmatische Dimension betont, andererseits wurde der Prozess als Ergebnis einer Wechselwirkung von Textdaten und Hörervorwissen und -intention verstanden. 1 Seit dem wird Hӧrverstehen als eine komplexe geistige Leistung betrachtet, wobei zwei Prozesse Bottomup (aufsteigend) und Top Down (absteigend) zusammenwirken. Wӓhrend Bottom up Prozess von linguistischen Merkmalen wie Phonologie, Lexik und Semantik ausgelӧst wird, wird Top down Prozess von non linguistischen Merkmalen wie Weltwissen und Allgemein wissen gesteuert. Diese zwei Stufen der mentalen Interpretationen nach Abschluss einer reinen auditiven Rezeption finden nicht nacheinander statt, sondern Stufe B setzt unmittelbar auf Stufe A ein. 2 Da Hӧrverstehen ein komplexer Prozess ist, ist es selbstverständlich, dass die Verarbeitung der Informationen auf verschiedenen Ebenen zusätzliche Schwierigkeiten bereitet. Christine Goh beschreibt diese Schwierigkeiten beim Hӧrverstehen als interne und externe Eigenschaften, die Textverstӓndnis beeinträchtigen können und als Probleme bei Verarbeitung in der Echtzeit, die sich auf kognitive Prozesse auf verschiedenen Ebenen beziehen. 3 Daher ist die Diskussion um die Schwierigkeiten ohne die Auseinandersetzung mit den Modellen des Hӧrverstehensprozess unvollständig. Obwohl es viele Modelle zur Erklӓrung von Hӧrverstehensprozess zur Verfügung stehen, weisen alle auf den komplexen Prozess des Hӧrverstehens, wobei verschiedene Verarbeitung nicht nacheinander, sondern zur gleichen Zeit stattfinden. Unterrichtsbeobachtung stellt heutzutage eine oft verwendete Technik im Fremdsprachenunterricht dar: Sie ermöglicht sowohl eine Verbesserung von der Unterrichtsgestaltung als auch eine Selbstreflexion des Beobachters hierzu.
In diesem Portfolio lege ich zuerst einige einführenden Informationen zu mir als Fremdsprachenlernende sowie meine persönliche Vision von gutem Unterricht dar.
In einem zweiten Schritt präsentiere ich die Hauptmerkamale und die Schwerpunktsetzungen der Unterrichtshospitationen, die ich im Rahmen des MA-Seminars "Unterrichtsbeobachtung und -analyse" vorgenommen habe. Zum Schluss ziehe ich daraus allgemeine Schlussfolgerungen im Hinblick auf meinen späteren Fremdsprachenunterrricht.

The author discusses the problem of ethnocultural salience as a specific characteristic of the representation of cultural information in Russian educational publications on foreign languages, which has both implicit and explicit comparative character. The article presents two main blocks of ethnocultural information in educational publications ("big" and "live" country studies), examples of filling these blocks in modern German textbooks for Russian schools are presented, as well as some prospects of ethnocultural "deepening" into the instructional material of the textbooks is outlined. Such perspectives include introducing gender-marked language materials, focussing on data from modern comparative cultural studies, information about the national character, the picture of the world of native speakers of Russian and foreign languages, discussing data of Lewis' cultural typology, information on the proxemics, kinesics, the nation's predominant mode of action, information on the accepted ethical behavior patterns in different age groups. The article also draws attention to the need for a certain correction of the material depending on certain student teams' specifics, cultural traditions of Russian regions, religious characteristics of the given school collective.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den Gemäldezyklus 18. Oktober 1977, den Gerhard Richter zwischen März und November 1988 malte, der aus fünfzehn Bildern besteht. Unter Beachtung ihrer eigenen Ästhetik wird die Malerei in den Mittelpunkt einer interdisziplinär angesiedelten Landeskunde gerückt. Im Rahmen eines fächerübergreifenden Unterrichts wird für eine gezielte Auseinandersetzung mit den Ereignissen des Deutschen Herbst im DaF-Unterricht plädiert. Der hier behandelte Oktober-Zyklus gehört zum Kanon der Gegenwartskunst; die Bilder besitzen auf Grund ihrer thematischen Aktualität (40 Jahre Deutscher Herbst, 1977–2017), maltechnischen und formativen Besonderheiten sowie kommunikativen Offenheit einerseits das Potenzial, anhand handlungsorientierter Aufgabenstellungen authentische sprachliche Äußerungen im Unterricht zu motivieren. Andererseits knüpfen sie aus lernökonomischer Sicht an vorhandene Wissensbestände der Lernenden und bieten ferner einen anspruchsvollen Zugang zum ästhetischen Lernen im kulturwissenschaftlich ausgerichteten Landeskundeunterricht.

The article is devoted to the cycle of paintings entitled October 18, 1977,
which consists of 15 pictures, painted by Gerhard Richter between March and
November 1988. Within the framework of cross-curricular teaching, I propose
here a goal-oriented approach with the events of the German autumn within
teaching German as a foreign language. This cycle belongs to the canon of contemporary art. As a consequence of their contemporary thematic relevance
(40 years of German autumn, 1977–2017) along with their technical and formal
qualities as well as their communicative accessibility, these pictures have the
capacity to motivate authentic linguistic utterances when used in teaching in
connection with activity-oriented tasks. On the other hand they can be integrated
with the learners’ existing state of knowledge and also provide stimulating access
to aesthetic learning within cultural studies teaching.

Segundo a teoria metalexicográfica, os dicionários pedagógicos estão atrelados ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem de uma língua. Isto significa que não há como dissociar esta classe de obras lexicográficas dos programas de ensino. O objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar se uma modalidade específica de dicionários pedagógicos, os chamados dicionários de aprendizes de uma língua estrangeira, estão efetivamente atrelados a algum programa de trabalho. Ademais, será analisada a maneira como a língua alvo é descrita. Avaliar-se-á um dicionário de aprendizes de língua inglesa (learner’s dictionary) e outro de língua alemã (Lernerwörterbuch). Foram escolhidas estas línguas em função de dois fatores. Em primeiro lugar, para ambas as línguas, há documentos que contêm diretrizes sobre o seu ensino-aprendizagem (English Profile (2011) e Profile Deutsch (2005), respectivamente). Em segundo lugar, porque ambas línguas contam com já consolidados expoentes de dicionários de aprendizes. Nossos resultados demonstram que a falta de indicação dos recursos léxicos específicos atrelados a cada nível de aprendizagem impossibilita o aproveitamento dos documentos supracitados para compilar dicionários de aprendizes. Os dicionários de aprendizes analisados, por sua vez, refletem a norma em uso, mas não estão efetivamente atrelados aos documentos norteadores do ensino-aprendizagem de inglês e alemão. ///// 
According to metalexicographic theory, pedagogical dictionaries are concerned with language teaching and learning. It means that it is impossible to dissociate these lexicographic tools from syllabi. The aim of this paper is to assess if a specific kind of pedagogical dictionaries, the learner’s dictionaries of a foreign language, are in fact related to some syllabus. Furthermore, we analyse how learner’s dictionaries describe their target language. We assess an English learner’s dictionary and a German learner’s dictionary (a Lernerwörterbuch). We chose these languages by reason of two factors. Firstly, there are guidelines for both languages about their teaching and learning (such as English Profile (2011) and Profile Deutsch (2005)). Secondly, English and German traditions have archetypes of learner’s dictionaries. The results obtained demonstrate that the lack of specific lexical resources related to each reference level doesn’t permit to take advantage from the guidelines for compiling learner’s dictionaries. The dictionaries we analyzed reflect indeed the language in use, but they are not related to any guidelines for English and German language teaching and learning.

2015.-2017.godine provedeno je istraživanje na ukupno 363 hrvatska učitelja i nastavnika engleskoga i njemačkoga kao stranoga jezika kako bi se utvrdilo na koji način stječu kompetencije za poučavanje učenika s disleksijom i smatraju li stečeno znanje dovoljnim za poučavanje takvih učenika. U radu su prikazani rezultati analize prvog dijela podataka, a naknadna statistička analiza preostalih prikupljenih podataka pružit će uvid u cjelovitu sliku o kompetencijama učitelja i nastavnika za poučavanje učenika s disleksijom. Analiza je pokazala kako je manje od jedne četvrtine svega ispitanika tijekom studija slušalo kolegije na kojima je bilo govora o disleksiji, a više od pola ih je u sklopu individualnog profesionalnog usavršavanja sudjelovalo na seminarima i radionicama s temom disleksije. Skoro svi ispitanici izrazili su želju za dodatnim usavršavanjem u području poučavanja učenika s disleksijom i smatraju kako stečenom diplomom na visokom učilištu nisu stekli dovoljno kompetencija za poučavanje istih. Zanimljivo je da se internet pokazao kao vodeći izvor informacija o disleksiji, dok se stručna literatura našla na drugom mjestu. Nalazi istraživanja u skladu su s nalazima istraživanja provedenima posljednjih 15 godina na hrvatskim učiteljima i nastavnicima te ukazuju na nedovoljnu obučenost za poučavanje učenika s disleksijom i ostalim teškoćama u učenju kao i na potrebu za obogaćivanjem programa obveznog individualnog usavršavanja.

In diesem Portfolio präsentiere ich meine persönliche Erfahrung als Tutorin einer russischen Fremdsprachenlernerin. Im Rahmen des MA-Seminars "Tutoring für Lernende" habe ich zwischen Februar und April 2016 einige Monate Privatkurse durchgeführt.
Zuerst lege ich meine Voraussetzungen und persönlichen Ziele als Lehrperson dar. In einem zweiten Schritt stelle ich hingegen die sprachlichen Vorbedingungen und die Motivation der Lernerin zum Deutschlernen. Nachdem ich die ausgewählten Lehrmaterialien und zwei begründete Beispiele aus dem Unterricht vorgelegt habe, ziehe ich einige Schlussfolgerungen im Hinblick auf meinen späteren Fremdsprachenunterricht.

The collegiate foreign language profession has become increasingly aware of the unnecessarily detrimental effects of bifurcated curricula on student learning and departmental governance, yet there have been few instances to date of departments that have been able to achieve unified, articulated programs of study. This article presents one foreign language department’s initiatives and activities to do just that. We describe the collaborative process that the German Studies Department at Emory University underwent in its full-scale revision of the undergraduate curriculum. The chairperson begins the description by explaining his role in the reform process. Other faculty members continue the description by outlining the institutional and department context, the impetus for reform, the curriculum’s theoretical framework, and the different curricular levels. An ongoing, multi-year project, the revised curriculum has placed demands on students and faculty, but also indicated promise for enhanced departmental identity and student learning.

This paper begins by reviewing the current practices in foreign language teaching in light of Bourdieu's theories of language and power to show how failing to assess discursive intent prevents students from understanding the strategic use of language. Bourdieu's model is then proposed as the basis for a pedagogy that authorizes students to use their existing cognitive skills in order to assess a text's discourse and uncover its verbal and nonverbal strategies. To illustrate this alternative pedagogy, pedagogical techniques used to teach a short video segment from German television in a third-semester Business German course will be discussed. Each of the techniques encourages students to look for the significance of the video's visual as well as verbal discourse. To help exemplify both the authorizing process and the pedagogical effectiveness of this new approach, these techniques will also be compared with input exercises that ask students to register information without assessing discursive intent. As a final point, this paper will discuss oral and written exercises that build on students' insights from their analysis of the video's visual and acoustic features.

Dentro del marco de la enseñanza del alemán como lengua extranjera, se diseñó una actividad en la cual los estudiantes de pregrado (que cursaban el segundo semestre de la carrera de Filología e Idiomas alemán en la asignatura “alemán básico 2 competencia escrita”), debían crear y desarrollar durante todo el semestre un blog por medio del cual darían a conocer un mito o una leyenda colombiana en el idioma alemán. Esto con el fin de desarrollar su competencia de producción escrita de manera paulatina durante las 16 semanas de clase. Durante el proceso hubo varias etapas en las cuales ellos debían desarrollar determinadas tareas del blog, con el fin de llevar un orden en el proceso de creación del mismo.

El uso académico de las plataformas online es una realidad que brinda un amplio
abanico de posibilidades de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Las plataformas institucionales, en
concreto, facilitan este proceso, ya que son herramientas conocidas y utilizadas diariamente
por ambos protagonistas: el alumno y el profesor. El Grupo de Enseñanza Colaborativa de
Lenguas en Red (GECOLER) de la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) pretende precisamente
aprovechar esta oportunidad al alcance de toda la comunidad universitaria. Este
equipo de innovación educativa está formado por profesores de distintas lenguas (alemán,
francés, inglés, español y valenciano) que trabajan de forma colaborativa con alumnos de
distintas titulaciones y su propuesta responde a la necesidad de diseñar nuevas actividades
para las sesiones de prácticas en el laboratorio multimedia. Para esta aportación en
concreto, nos planteamos la siguiente pregunta de investigación: ¿es conveniente hacer
uso de la plataforma PoliformaT y de google docs para las sesiones de prácticas en la asignatura
de Alemán 2? Presentamos una descripción de la metodología seguida para llevar a
cabo la actividad, y presentaremos los resultados obtenidos y las conclusiones que hemos
extraído de nuestra experiencia.

While social media are nothing new anymore in the foreign language classroom, their integration into existing classroom structures as a supplement to more traditional in-class activities still often constitutes a challenge to both teacher and student. This paper will take a look at the possibilities that the Facebook group function has to offer for the foreign language classroom. The author will share his experiences with using Facebook in German courses at a university in Taiwan to illustrate how social media can be used to practice foreign language skills and broaden the scope of foreign language contact, while engaging in meaningful conversation with others. In the case at hand, students with varying levels of experience with German were registered as members of a Facebook group which had been created for the specific purpose of enhancing the learning experience. In order to achieve close integration with the in-class syllabus, guidelines and basic rules for interaction in the group were established and students were asked to document their group activities and submit them for evaluation on a regular basis. The paper will discuss both benefits and challenges encountered while using Facebook as a social teaching and learning tool.

Trends in research on teacher development in recent years have shown a shift away from merely studying what teachers learn to how they learn, how they improve their learning, and how they transform their skills and knowledge into practice so as to offer their own learners an improved educational experience. Although blended learning has been proposed as a means to enhance student learning and engagement, little research has been done on blended learning teacher development programmes, especially in the context of teachers of German Second Additional Language (SAL) in South Africa. This article aims to shift the focus from general setting in higher education institutions to teacher professional development programmes for teachers of German SAL by proposing blended learning as a mediator to foster selfdirected learning in teacher professional development programmes. After examining existing definitions and models on blended learning, a synthesis of models, which could be adjusted to the South African teaching context, is proposed. The new model offers certain opportunities to foster the characteristics of self-directed learners, which are highlighted in this article. Suggestions are made on how this model could be utilised in and adapted to the context of teacher professional development for teachers of German SAL in order to foster the characteristics of self-directed learning rather than merely imparting subject knowledge to teachers.

Resumo: Fornecemos aqui um breve panorama do uso das novas mídias no ensino de línguas, num contexto em que os recursos virtuais incorporam-se cada vez mais à prática profissional e à vida privada num mundo globalizado. Vislumbram-se três cenários, com base em diversas situ-ações de trabalho e exigências técnicas, relativas ao profissional de ensino de línguas e ao con-texto institucional em que atua. Partindo de recursos úteis em sites da internet (dicionários e gramáticas online etc.), apresentamos também alguns programas para produção de material complementar, chegando por fim às plataformas eletrônicas de ensino/aprendizagem.

Abstract: We present here a brief overview of how to use new media in language teaching, in a context where virtual resources are increasingly incorporated into professional practice and private life of a globalised world. Three scenarios are sketched out, on the basis of different work situations and technical requirements, concerning as well the teaching professional as the institutional context in which he or she operates. Starting with useful resources on Internet sites (online dictionaries, grammars, etc.), we also discuss authoring software for complementary material production and finish with a glance at course management systems.

En los estudios de traducción, pero también en la enseñanza de las lenguas extranjeras en general, ya no se discute la importancia del enfoque funcional-comunicativo puesto que todo discurso natural se genera a partir de unas ideas que se quieren expresar. Esto es válido para un texto en su conjunto y también para las oraciones que lo componen. Sin embargo, hasta el momento no se ha conseguido realizar el análisis funcional a un nivel lingüístico más elemental, es decir, al nivel de las  unidades comunicativas más pequeñas. Y es a este nivel donde se produce una gran parte de los errores. En el presente trabajo, que se enmarca en al proyecto de investigación Gramática Funcional Contrastiva (español-alemán) para Traductores, se propone una metodología concreta para abordar esta tarea, y se presentan algunos de los resultados que ya se han obtenido.

Unser  Aufsatz  diskutiert  aktuelle  Debatten  zu  Sprachen  und  Mehrsprachigkeit  im  Bil-dungssystem in Lettland. Theoretischer Hintergrund sind Debatten zur Mehrsprachigkeit, zu Spracheinstellungen und zur heteroglossischen Ideologie. Nach  einer  kurzen  historischen  Einführung  in  Fragen  des  sprachlichen  Ökosystems Lettlands  stellen  wir  Beispiele  aus  der  aktuellen  Reform  der  Schulcurricula  vor,  die Mehrsprachigkeitsansätze  aufgreifen.  Diese  Reformversuche  werden  allerdings  durch weit  verbreitete  Diskurse  in  der  lettischen  Gesellschaft  abgelehnt.  Anhand  von Reaktionen  von  Bildungspolitikern  und in  journalistischen  Texten  zeigen  wir,  wie  ein-flussreich  traditionelle  Vorstellungen  vom Sprachlernen  nach  wie  vor sind  und wie  eine Modernisierung  des  Lettischunterrichts  mit  Fragen  von  nationaler  Identität  verbunden wird, in denen  bisweilen  sogar offen xenophobisch  argumentiert wird. Gleichzeitig wird deutlich, wie im Diskurs im Interesse der „Rettung der lettischen Sprache“ mit Mythen und Halbwahrheitenoperiert wird.  Der  dritte  Teil  des  Aufsatzes  stellt  in  diesem  Kontext  zwei  Studien  unter  Lehrern  inLettland  vor,  in  denen  explizit  nach  Einstellungen  und  Praktiken  zu  Code-Switching, Translanguaging und ähnlichen Phänomenen gefragt wurde. In den Antworten zeigt sich die  Spaltung  der  Gesellschaft;  jedoch zeigen  die  Ergebnisse  auch,  dass  Perspektiven  füreinen  modernen  und  mehrsprachigen  Sprachunterricht  in  Lettland  durchaus  vorhanden sind.

Audiovisual material, such as movies and series, give the teacher the opportunity to point out different types of the target language speakers: native speakers (commonly taken as example) and intercultural speakers (House 2007). Such non-native speakers are the ones who take proper use of the foreign language to communicate. Introducing non-native speakers to the student is importante so they can break the concept of the native speaker as an ideal learning model (Rajagopalan 2012); due to this reason it’s indispensable to have this kind of character properly represented in series and movies. Bearing this in mind, we aim to analyze, in this paper, the series Erste Wege in Deutschland and Jojo sucht das Glück, regarding their main characters (both supposedly intercultural speakers). Two and five episodes from these series respectively have been analyzed, in order to reflect on the main characters, based on the characterization of intercultural speaker from related studies (Byram, Gribkova and Starkey 2002; House 2007; Oliveira 2012). The results point out to a superficial representation of these characters, once they reproduce, in general, typical characteristics of an ideal speaker, which creates stereotyped images of the target language

Teachers of German Second Additional Language (SAL) in South Africa face a number of obstacles both with regard to teaching, and with regard to their professional development. A professional development model was designed focusing on collaborative and self-directed learning. In the design, attention was paid to overcoming the obstacles to teacher professional development, while allowing for sufficient individualisation of learning aims. The design was based on the Four-Component Instructional Design (4C/ID). A first phase of the model was evaluated by local and international subject and instructional design experts, after which the model was implemented and evaluated by teachers of German SAL in South Africa. Participants in the trial implementation considered the programme to be relevant to their needs. However, a need was identified for the model to be revised to facilitate asynchronous collaborative learning more effectively. In this article, insights gained from the design, testing and evaluation of the model are highlighted.
