Brief Sketch of a Longer Lasting Way – Essay on Systemic Handling of Uncertain Developments.
The present essay outlines some basic considerations on using " systemic " as term of choice characterizing ones preferred professional stance. The conscientious handling of uncertain developments is chosen as a guiding theme. On the way sketched here there will appear both questions and ideas on the framing of our profession, and conceptual preferences, as well as cues to helpful possibilities of orientation concerning practice needs. The way sketched out in the present paper is in the end a personal one. In this respect it doesn't represent a normative standard. However this text can possibly be read, too, as sort of a commentary on side-and after-effects of the current debate on professionalization. And maybe this might perhaps be inevitable.

Zusammenfassung
Der folgende Beitrag skizziert einige grundlegende Überlegungen zum Umgang mit dem Begriff " systemisch ". Der gewissenhafte Umgang mit Ungewissem ist dabei ein Leitmotiv. Im Verlauf des hier skizzierten Weges kommen dabei sowohl Fragen und Überlegungen zur Rahmung unserer Profession vor, sowie konzeptionelle Vorlieben, als auch Hinweise auf hilfreiche Orientierungsmöglichkeiten für die konkrete Praxis. Der in diesem Beitrag skizzierte Weg ist letztlich ein persönlicher. Insofern vertritt er keine Norm. Dass er dennoch auch als ein Kommentar zu Neben-und Folgeerscheinungen der laufenden Professionalisierungsdebatte gelesen werden kann, ist vielleicht nicht zu vermeiden.

Wie kommt es, dass einem manchmal eine Zustimmung die Lust am Weitermachen verhageln kann? Wieso ist es manchmal so diffizil, die richtigen Worte zu finden, wenn man einen doch „nur“ unterstützen möchte? Und was wäre eigentlich ein plausibler Hintergrund für die gängige Wendung, dass die Botschaft stets von den EmpfängerInnen bestimmt werde? Mit solchen und ähnlichen Fragen ist man dicht an dem, was mir seit einiger Zeit unter dem Namen „Self-Determination Theory“ (SDT, Theorie der Selbstbestimmung) eine ziemlich hilfreiche und weiterführende Anregung geworden ist. Als Edward Deci und Richard Ryan im Jahr 2000 die SDT einem umfassenderen Fachpublikum vorstellten, konnten sie auf die Ergebnisse von etwa 30 Jahren Forschung zurückgreifen. Das vorliegende Buch verdankt sein Entstehen dann dem offenbar fruchtbaren Impuls, den 1999 eine erste, exklusiv der SDT gewidmete Konferenz setzte. Die meisten der hier versammelten Beiträge entstammen diesem Umfeld.

Gestalt Therapy techniques are considered to be powerful tools for the remobilization of human growth and change. I will attempt to show that the power of these techniques lies in the fact that they are effective ways of dealing with our "internalizations". I will first briefly review object relation theory and then discuss gestalt techniques as they pertain to internal objects.

El intenso flujo migratorio entre México y Estados Unidos trae consigo cambios en la dinámica familiar de los hogares en donde alguno(s) de sus integrantes o la familia completa migran o retornan a casa después de haber estado ausentes, ya sea de manera voluntaria o forzada por procesos de deportación o repatriación. Los niños y niñas en los hogares de migrantes viven de manera estresante los procesos de separación y reunificación familiar. Ello trae consigo la imperante necesidad de brindar atención psicológica que promueva el bienestar integral de las personas migrantes, específicamente de los infantes y sus familias. Este artículo propone diversas técnicas y estrategias para el trabajo con niños y niñas con experiencia migratoria, así como con sus familias.

In this paper, I will demonstrate how I worked with a family through a systemic lens and applied systemic ideas in the work we did together.  To give some context, I operate in an area of the City of Bristol, where many fall within 10% of the UK's most disadvantaged population. We use the Signs of Safety (SoS) model of practice. It is a collaborative, strengths-based systemic model for assessing risk. I operate within a unit based on the Reclaiming Social Work model that embraces a systemic social learning model for practice.  To develop a relational approach to working with the family, I have used family scripts to explore how the problem sits within the family. I have chosen to use ideas from the Milan and Post Milan schools to shape my work with the family and consider principles of Brief Solution Focussed Therapy (BSFT) and Narrative approaches. I will take a social constructionist approach to reflect on sessions conducted for the assessment and use the Serpentine model and the Hierarchical Model from Coordinated Management of Meaning theory.

RESUMEN:
En el presente texto se revisan las principales intervenciones basadas en el paradigma narrativo en el contexto del modelo sistémico. En primer lugar recapitulamos de forma somera, aún a riesgo de resultar excesivamente simplistas, la evolución del modelo sistémico para describir la manera en que este proceso acompaña el desarrollo de la óptica narrativa. En segundo lugar, nos centramos en la descripción del modelo de terapia narrativa de Michael White y el procedimiento de externalización, deteniéndonos en los principales pasos del proceso terapéutico e ilustrando cada fase con ejemplos clínicos con el objeto de dar al lector una visión detallada de las intervenciones narrativas al uso. Un último apartado está dedicado a reseñar la afinidad entre la teoría de constructos personales y las intervenciones narrativas destacando su relevancia para el futuro desarrollo del modelo sistémico.

ABSTRACT
In this article we review the main interventions based on the narrative paradigm in the context of the systemic model. Firstly, we briefly recapitulate, at the risk of being overly simplistic, the evolution of family therapy describing how this process accompanies the development of narrative practice. Second, we focus on the description of Michael White’s narrative therapy and his externalization procedure detailing every stage of the therapeutic process with clinical examples in order to give the reader a detailed view of common narrative interventions. A final section is allocated to describe the affinity between personal construct theory and narrative therapy highlighting its fruitfulness for the evolution of the systemic model.

Este trabajo está íntegramente dedicado a explicar un recurso técnico en terapia de pareja: la carta relacional. Se trata de una herramienta surgida de la terapia narrativa, que está diseñada para revitalizar la ética relacional de las parejas mediante una intervención breve que consta de dos entrevistas y una tarea escrita. En el texto, se explica primero el origen de la técnica y su base teórica. Después, se describe cómo llevar a cabo el proceso con instrucciones específicas paso a paso. En un tercer apartado, se reflexiona sobre el potencial de la técnica para generar cambio relacional y los mecanismos de funcionamiento involucrados. Se presenta también un estudio de caso en el que se analiza el impacto de la técnica en el bienestar de la pareja. Por último, se discuten las limitaciones del procedimiento y se señalan futuras líneas de desarrollo.


This paper is entirely focused on a specific therapeutic resource in couple therapy: the relational letter. This is a tool, that emerged from narrative therapy, designed to revitalise couples’ relational ethics and consists of two interviews and a writing task. First, the origin of the technique and its theoretical basis are explained. Then, we describe how to carry out the process with specific step-by-step instructions. In a third section, we reflect on the potential of the technique to generate relational change and the mechanisms involved. A brief case study is also presented, analyzing the impact of the technique on the couple’s welfare. Finally, the limitations of the procedure are discussed and future lines of development are outlined.

El objetivo del presente artículo es proponer un diagnóstico desde el Trabajo Social basado en el modelo sistémico para el abordaje de familias con hijos/as adolescentes en situación de vulnerabilidad social en el ámbito hospitalario. Aunque se trata de un desarrollo desde y para
esta disciplina, sus aplicaciones y posibilidades podrían ser incorporadas al quehacer de otras profesiones que también asisten a esta población. Se trata de una síntesis teórica y de revisión bibliográfica a partir del ejercicio profesional con estos sujetos en un hospital público, que apunta a revalorizar el diagnóstico como momento de la
metodología y al pensamiento sistémico como paradigma holístico.

Man könnte sich wundern, dass es so lange gedauert hat, bis Resonanz zu dem Leitgedanken wurde, der trotz seiner umfänglichen Querverbindungen auf beinahe einfache, plausible und weiterführende Weise zu fast jedem wichtigen Thema eine frische Orientierung zu geben vermag. Da lassen sich – im weitesten Sinne – selbst die oft technizistisch wirkenden Systemdifferenzierungen sensu Luhmann in Schwingung bringen, wenn man es denn für nötig hielte. Unabhängig davon dürfte Resonanz für eine dermaßen an Beziehungen und Wechselwirkungen orientierte Perspektivenfamilie wie das Systemische ein zentrales Leitmotiv sein.

Résumé

Ce cours offrira une brève introduction à la psychologie relationnelle comme un nouveau départ pour la psychologie et les thérapies axées sur les relations, incluant la thérapie conjugale et la thérapie familiale.

Nous aborderons les principes de la thérapie relationnelle basés sur la théorie systémique de Watzlawick et associés (2014). Nous définirons le soi relationnel et démontrerons le dialogue relationnel (Di Nicola, 2011).

Trois modèles de thérapie relationnelle seront démontrés avec des vignettes cliniques :
(1) la thérapie conjugale basée sur la théorie de l’attachement (Johnson & Whiffen, 2003);
(2) la thérapie familiale systémique (Selvini Palazzoli, et al., 2014); et
(3) la thérapie familiale culturelle (Di Nicola, 1997).


Objectifs pédagogiques

1. Définir la psychologie relationnelle comme base pour la thérapie relationnelle.
2. Définir et examiner les principes de la thérapie relationnelle basés sur la théorie systémique.
3. Démontrer trois modèles de thérapie relationnelles avec vignettes cliniques.

In this chapter, I propose how as professionals, we need to shift our skills from diagnostic activities to relational curiosity and so develop collaborative ways of conversing with people who have Asperger Syndrome and others in their networks. Through immersing ourselves in dialogue with people and their social and professional networks, we can bring forth evidence of people with Asperger Syndrome having unique and useful expertise which can play a part in resolving concerns and improving communication between those in their networks. Not only is it socially productive but it is also ethical for professionals to shift their focus from an exploration of ‘mind’ as commonly believed to exist solely within an individual person and to the relational contexts so influential on what we are constructing with each other through talk and how that shapes what is able to be recognised and developed.

By foregrounding dialogue over diagnosis, we see how experimenting with user friendly talk can provide opportunities for symptoms and features of High Functioning Autism / Asperger Syndrome (Wing 1981; Gillberg 1991) to be understood as meaningful communications in which the ‘disabled’ person is experienced as able and enabling. The individualised account of the person having been diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome is exchanged for descriptions of an interactive social system. I will show how ‘mind’ is relocated from the cognitive brain to the social opportunistic space created between people.

This exploratory research project was conducted to enable an exploration of what occurs within the learning environment of a music enrichment programme conducted within a Pupil Referral Unit.  I explored Deleuze’s concepts of the ‘event’ and the ‘series’ to capture how children experienced the two series of engagement and achievement in the moment of an educational event.

I developed lesson plans and strategies to teach interactive, practical music enrichment sessions over seven weeks. I delivered weekly sessions providing students with a wide variety of musical activities from instrumental performance lessons to computer-generated composition.  Data was collected in the form of journal notes, interviews and formal lesson observation material and subjected to a thematic analysis.

The thematic analysis demonstrated an impact of teaching practices on student engagement and attainment with positive outcomes for engagement but a negative student response towards attempts to integrate strategies to measure attainment. Analysis supported the findings of previous research in this area where although most enjoyed the sessions as an engaging diversion at some level, the data does not demonstrate that the majority gained anything concrete in terms of attainment or progression. Finally, through the analysis coding the lack of consistency, security and balance across all aspects of these children’s lives came through as the biggest barrier preventing them from succeeding in all aspects of school.  The importance of interacting in a socially and emotionally balanced manner was recognised by staff and they valued engagement through a consistent, positive regard for these children above academic attainment.

Zusammenfassung:
1986 erschien Paul Dells Aufsatzsammlung „Klinische Erkenntnis“ und wurde zu einer Ikone des sich rasant entwickelnden systemischen Diskurses im deutschsprachigen Raum. Erstaunlicherweise war der Autor nach einigen Jahren vom Radar eben dieses Diskurses verschwunden. Was hatte es damit auf sich? Im vorliegenden Aufsatz rekonstruiere ich den Gehalt des Buches, die Geschichte seiner Rezeption, sowie die Weiterentwicklung des Autors, seinen neuen Themenschwerpunkt und wie das alles zusammenhängen könnte.

Knowledge and other curiosities – Where did Dell get to? Getting on to the track of a book legend.
In 1986 Paul Dells essay collection Klinische Erkenntnis was published in Germany and at once got to be an icon of the rapidly developing systemic discourses round here. Astonishingly after a few years the author had disappeared from the radar screen of this very discourses. What had happened? In the present paper I’m going to reconstruct the book’s content, its reception history, the author’s further development, his new thematic focus, and how all this could be reflected as a cohering phenomenon.

This paper examines some political implications of therapies which focus on the individual and their immediate systems. I am suggesting that, as therapists, we need to review what we consider to be an appropriate system in focus within therapeutic conversation and address the ethical relationship between change occurring at a level of the individual and their immediate, smaller systems and change taking place in a wider system, at a level of society, of community. I am proposing that by focusing on smaller systems alone, we are i) setting limits on the resources which a therapist and client may draw on and ii) undermining the potential for change on a larger scale in society through the individual not being invited to locate or identify their personal experiences or accounts within the broader or more public arena of a wider system. As therapists concerned with ideology, I suggest that we need to develop more of a critique of the liberal humanist and postmodernist ideologies, so considering the influence and implications of these ideologies for practice and for the role our practice might play in maintaining or disrupting power relations in society. In particular, attention is paid to the social construction of the individual and the diminishing idea of group membership. With reference to clinical material, the paper goes on to propose some possible ways of expanding the client's and therapist's audiences, so increasing the ideas available through identification of and with a wider system. In particular, I introduce the notion of the hypothetical audience and its use with wider system questions.

Prof. Di Nicola presents Cultural Family Therapy (CFT), a synthesis of two approaches pioneered in the McGill University Dept. of Psychiatry where he trained: family therapy and transcultural psychiatry. Key influences include Maurizio Andolfi (1989) and Mara Selvini Palazzoli (1988) in family therapy and Raymond Prince (2010) and Henry Murphy (1982, 1986) in transcultural psychiatry. In numerous publications and international workshops over the last 30 years, Prof. Di Nicola has elaborated a model of CFT, beginning with a monograph published while he was a Fellow in Family Therapy at the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry (Di Nicola, 1985) and a key article while he was Chief Resident at the AMI (Di Nicola, 1986). A model of CFT was presented in greater depth in his book, A Stranger in the Family: Culture, Families, and Therapy (1997) and updated in Letters to a Young Therapist (2011).

CFT weaves together family stories that express their mental and relational predicaments and conceptual tools for conducting clinical work. CFT is an ongoing update of our notions of “family” and “therapy,” on one hand, and of “culture” and “psychiatry,” on the other. From the beginning, CFT was constructed to deal with threshold people undergoing rapid cultural change. 

Three basic principles and processes for CFT will be reviewed:

1) the deep parallels between the notions of “family” and “culture,” mean that “culture” supersedes the notion of family “system”;
2) each family is the bearer of the larger culture(s) in which it is embedded and creates a culture of its own, so the family is the vehicle for intergenerational cultural transmission, for maintaining culture (cultural coherence), and for generating its own small-scale cultural adaptations, yielding three yoked family functions: cultural transmission, cultural maintenance/coherence, and cultural adaptation;
3) at the heart of systemic family theory and sociocultural psychiatry is a relational psychology that inverses theorizing from self to society by redefining the notions of identity and belonging through relations.

With its relational and sociocultural approach, CFT is exquisitely responsive to working with threshold people – families undergoing culture change within and across cultures. In a world with huge global flows of migrants and refugees instigated by conflict, disasters, or economic and social reasons, CFT offers clinical tools to understand and treat families experiencing severe stress due to rapid and massive culture change.

CFT grew/unfolded by examining families in different cultures and in invisible or otherwise discounted/ignored social circumstances, from invisible minorities to undocumented migrants and refugees (Di Nicola, 1998, 2012a, 2016).

Mit der Serie „Psychotherapeutische Dialoge“ hat Uwe Britten ein Format entwickelt, das zuverlässig für ebenso interessante wie fundierte Erkundungen spezifischer Fragestellungen aus dem Bereich der Psychotherapie sorgt. Eingeladen zum Gespräch sind stets zwei profilierte KollegInnen, die zum Thema publiziert haben und, idealerweise, unterschiedliche Positionen dazu vertreten. Wenn es gut läuft, können sich dabei belebende Momente ergeben, ein Hineinbewegen in noch nicht verphraste Beschreibungen eigener Prämissen, Suchbewegungen und Arbeitserfahrungen sowie deren Einbettung in theoretisches Rüstzeug. Uwe Britten erweist sich dabei als ein spannender Impulsgeber. Er überblickt erkennbar ein weites Feld, schaut über Tellerränder, bohrt nach und liefert Stichworte, die sich in der Regel nicht einfach so abarbeiten lassen. Es sind, um das abzuschließen, also erhellende Eindrücke zu erwarten, wenn man Bücher dieser Serie in die Hand nimmt.

Wenn ich über Sinn und Zweck meiner Arbeit als professioneller Helfer nachdenke, komme ich immer wieder auf diesen Satz von Bill O’Hanlon, den ich als Motto für den folgenden Beitrag ausgesucht habe. Wie ein stets präsentes Rauschen im Hintergrund begleitet er mich – anregend und verstörend zugleich. Wie geht das: Systemische Praxis und mit einem Bein in jemandes Hölle einsteigen und eins im Möglichkeiten-Land verankern? Wie macht man das? Systemisches Möglichkeiten-Land, ja gut, denkbar, aber Hölle? Was lässt sich daraus machen? Machen?! Und so gerät das »Dazwischen«, die Lage zwischen instrumentellem Denken und existenzieller Erfahrung wie von selbst zum Th ema des Nachdenkens über Helfen in der Not.

Die beiden Lehrbucherautoren Arist von Schlippe und Jochen Schweitzer haben jetzt ein Kompendium systemischen Anwendungswissens herausgebracht, das sicherlich bald zur Standardlekture fur AusbilderInnen und AusbildungskandidatInnen werden durfte sowie zu einer bevorzugten Quelle fur allgemein am Thema Interessierte. Man merkt dem Text an, dass er aus der Fulle jahrzehntelanger Tatigkeit schopft sowie aus der im Lauf der letzten 20 Jahre entwickelten Eleganz, ein umfassendes und anspruchsvolles Ideengelande dermasen smooth zu portratieren und in Anwendungsvorschlage zu ubersetzen, dass man die Schlaglocher und Schotterstrecken kaum merken durfte, die es auch auf systemischen Wegen zuweilen gibt. Das ist alles gut gemacht, dient dem Zweck des uberblickartigen Informierens zu Lehr- und Lernzwecken ebenso wie der Selbstpositionierung auf Augenhohe in Bezug zu anderen Schulen professioneller psychosozialer Hilfen. In der Serie: „Entwicklung der Systemischen Therapie im deutschsprachigen Raum am Beispiel ausgewählter Publikationen“ erscheinen in lockerer Folge Reprints der Besprechungen von seinerzeit wegweisenden Publikationen. Im vorliegenden Fall handelt es sich um die im Jahr 1999 als Buch erschienene Materialsammlung, die Günter Schiepek im Auftrag der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Systemische Therapie (AGST) erstellt hatte. Diese Materialsammlung sollte dazu dienen, beim Wissenschaftlichen Beirat Psychotherapie der Bundesärztekammer den Antrag auf Anerkennung der Systemischen Therapie zu begründen. Das Vorhaben scheiterte seinerzeit am Votum des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats Psychotherapie. Der entsprechende Antrag wurde abgelehnt.
Das Buch dokumentiert einen bedeutsamen Zwischenschritt auf dem Weg zur mittlerweile erfolgten wissenschaftlichen und sozialrechtlichen Anerkennung. Gleichzeitig dokumentiert es die bereits damals zutage tretende Spannung zwischen unterschiedlichen und zum Teil nicht zu vereinbarenden Verständnissen systemischer Perspektiven. Die Dynamik und ungewisse weitere Entwicklung dieser Situation spiegelt sich in der aktuellen Literatur etwa am Beispiel zweier gänzlich unterschiedlich ausgerichteter Grundlagenwerke: zum Fokus auf anerkannter Psychotherapie „Systemische Therapie in der Praxis“ (von Sydow & Borst (Hrsg.), 2018, Beltz), dagegen zum Fokus systemische Praxis im weiteren Sinn „Systemische Therapie jenseits des Heilauftrags“ (Kuhnert & Berg (Hrsg.), 2020, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht). In dieser Form im Jahr 1999 noch in weiter Ferne, jedoch im Ansatz schon eine Entwicklung, die ihre Schatten vorauswarf. (Nov 2021, WL).

Das weckt Erwartungen, wenn ein Streit ums Nadelöhr angekündigt wird und das mit zwei Protagonisten, die beide seit Jahrzehnten die systemischen Diskurse maßgeblich beeinflussen und beide in letzter Zeit eine Art opus magnum vorgelegt haben . Die Carl-Auer-Akademie hatte die Bühne bereitgestellt für Jürgen Kriz und Fritz B. Simon und sie einen Tag lang über das miteinander reden lassen, was sie bewegt, wenn sie sich Gedanken machen über „Gott und die Welt“ systemischen Beratens. Mathias Ohler hat sie dabei begleitet und hat gelegentlich eingestreut – als Frage, als Anregung -, was einem als Außenstehendem in diesem hochkarätigen Dialog helfen kann, sich ebenfalls als AdressatIn gemeint zu fühlen. Als jemand, dem/der die Argumente, die da vertieft werden, etwas sagen sollen - über die Verständigung der beiden Diskutanten hinaus. Dass das Ganze gelungen ist, hat sicher auch mit den beiden Protagonisten zu tun. Jürgen Kriz und Fritz B. Simon stehen nicht nur für mittlerweile zentrale Theoriesäulen systemischer Konzepte professionellen Helfens. Sie verkörpern auch zwei unterschiedliche Arten, ihr Gewicht in die Waagschale zu werfen.

Der Verlag Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht hat mit der neuen Reihe „Psychotherapeutische Dialoge“ ein spannendes Experiment gestartet. Die Reihe wird herausgegeben von Uwe Britten, der jeweils ein Gespräch mit zwei AutorInnen zu einem Thema moderiert, das im Bereich der Psychotherapie für Konflikte gut ist. Für Konflikte gut sein meine ich hier wörtlich: Im besten Fall kann dabei eine lebendige Konversation entstehen, ein fundiertes, aufeinander bezogenes und geistesgegenwärtiges Durchdringen eines thematischen Feldes, das sich einem abschließenden Wissen nicht nur entzieht, sondern neue Fragen wie von selbst hervorbringt. Die Tiefe und Breite eines Bedeutungsfeldes wird erkennbar, die Querverbindungen zwischen einzelnen Beobachtungspositionen erschließen sich, das Feld löst sich aus einem vorher vielleicht statischen Rahmen und beginnt, sich als ein „schwingendes Gewebe“ zu erweisen. Der nun vorliegende erste Band der Serie scheint mir diesem Idealbild sehr nahe zu kommen. Uwe Britten gibt einerseits präzise Anstöße, lässt andererseits Raum für die beiden Diskutanten, wenn sie ihre Gedanken entwickeln, das Terrain aus ihrer jeweiligen Sicht erkunden. Dabei entsteht ein spezifischer Groove, der das Thema Diagnosen im psychotherapeutischen Geschehen tatsächlich aufleben lässt.

Om de enorme complexiteit van kinderen, uit families met allerlei verschillende klasse, etnische en culturele achtergronden, systemisch te begrijpen is een Cultuursensitieve, intersectionele, benadering nodig. Antropologisch kunnen gezinnen, families, scholen, buurten/gemeen-schappen gezien worden als ecosystemen: als in elkaar ingebedde, veranderende subsystemen in wisselwerking met voortdurende veranderende omgevingen.

In this study, I reflect on a process in an organization to get a firmer grip on how to practice process in organizations in a way that generates agency. I start by identifying and characterizing three key concepts of agency: The capacity of meaning making involving many different sources, the capacity of reflexivity implying metareflexivity, and the capacity of action fostered by self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem. Then I analyse a service checkout process of the elderly sector in an organization with a focus on leadership, organization and values. The analysis is lending perspectives from 'interventive interviewing', 'positioning theory' and of course the concept of 'agency'. As a final reflection, I draw some systemic lessons.
