Este artigo descreve os estudos experimentais realizados em pontes em arco de alvenaria de pedra com o objetivo de obter uma caracterizacao realista dos componentes e materiais das pontes. O trabalho faz parte de um estudo mais abrangente centrado na caracterizacao numerica e experimental de pontes em arco de alvenaria de pedra sob a acao do trafego ferroviario. A campanha experimental decorreu em duas pontes ferroviarias inseridas na rede ferroviaria Portuguesa, o viaduto de Durraes e a ponte PK124, ambas localizadas na Linha do Minho. Em ambas as pontes foram aplicadas tecnicas de ensaio “in-situ”, como a extracao de carotes, ensaios com macacos planos e com pressiometro de Menard e laboratoriais em amostras representativas dos materiais constituintes das pontes, cujos principais resultados e conclusoes sao aqui apresentados.

O problema do caixeiro viajante é uma questão de análise combinatória clássica que consiste em encontrar a rota de menor custo com fim de percorrer determinados pontos em um espaço, podendo ser aplicado em diversos contextos na sociedade. Contudo, sua solução por força bruta possui tempo de resposta incabível, tornando-a inacessível em diversas situações. Sendo assim, foram criadas ao longo do tempo diversas maneiras de resolver o problema do caixeiro viajante com tempo de resposta menor, e este artigo tem por objetivo propor uma abordagem que une três dessas maneiras: divisão e conquista ─ pela aplicação do algoritmo K-Means implementado na biblioteca scikit-learn ─, branch and bound e curva de preenchimento de espaço de Hilbert. O algoritmo descrito neste trabalho foi desenvolvido utilizando a linguagem de programação Python e sua solução trata-se de um caminho hamiltoniano, referente a formação geométrica, plana e completa do problema do caixeiro viajante.

The accuracy of numerical result depends on many factors, among which is the selection of appropriate element size. An optimum mesh size is capable in reducing the percentage error and computational time consumption. In this study, a numerical tool i.e AUTODYN 3D is used to determine the optimum element size for the soil barrier subjected to air blast load. The pressure results on barrier surface obtained through one third scale are able to produce results that are in good agreement with published experimental test data as compared to full scale simulation. In this study, the selection of mesh size 20 mm x 20 mm x 20 mm found considerably as the best element size for the case study of a rectangular soil barrier subjected to air blast load by using AUTODYN 3D software.

We propose a probabilistic methodology for developing improved load factors in standard provisions for wind loads, and use it to examine: the cause of the discrepancy noted in the 1980s between estimates of safety indices for wind and gravity loads; the relative magnitude of load factors for hurricane and non-hurricane regions; and the effect of the length of wind tunnel pressure records on the estimation of peak wind effects. According to our calculations, (1) the discrepancy between estimates of safety indices for gravity and wind loads is an artifact that can be removed by using current knowledge on probability distributions of extreme wind speeds; (2) the disregard in the ASCE 7-98 Standard of (a) knowledge uncertainties, and (b) errors inherent in the limited number of climatological data on which hurricane wind speed simulations are based, leads to incorrect wind load factor estimates; and (3) increasing beyond 30 min or even 20 min the length of pressure records used for the estimation of fluctuation peaks appears to have a relatively small effect on estimates of overall wind effects. We outline future research on wind directionality, sampling errors in the estimation of peak wind effects, and the use of probabilistic descriptions of wind effects and structural capacity to estimate probabilities of occurrence of nonlinear limit states, including structural collapse.

Developments in design methodologies and practices for structures in fire has for the last decade focussed on the horizontal stability of structures in fire. In this field there have been a number of developments of significance including the acceptance of membrane action as a viable load carrying mechanism under the large vertical displacements of floor systems which often occur during a fire. This research has focussed on two scenarios-simply supported floor systems and laterally restrained floor systems. Despite the large horizontal forces which the supporting structure must resist as a result of the adoption of these mechanisms in addition to the original vertical mechanical forces which were applied, very little research has been carried out into the consequences to the surrounding structure of the adoption of these mechanisms. These consequences were illustrated sharply by the collapse of the world trade centre twin towers on September the 11 th 2001, where fires which raged inside of two tall steel structures ultimately brought about their collapse.

The stability of a small cavity in a virtually infinite solid is studied in the context of anelasticity for two metals (Al and Cu). It is shown that the collapse occurs due to the dependence of the shear modulus on the relative volume change. It is shown that above a minimum external pressure P min the system cannot self sustain, unless the internal pressure does exceed a critical value, compensating the collapsing effect. The dif ferent models of anelasticity adopted are shown to have a scarce influence on the main results. In particular, the value of P min turns out to range about the 10% of the bulk modulus at zero pressure, for both metals and almost independently from the anelastic model.

This paper presents the blast response, damage mechanism and evaluation of residual load capacity of a concrete-steel composite (CSC) column using dynamic computer simulation techniques. This study is an integral part of a comprehensive research program which investigated the vulnerability of structural framing systems to catastrophic and progressive collapse under blast loading and is intended to provide design information on blast mitigation and safety evaluation of load bearing vulnerable columns that are key elements in a building. The performance of the CSC column is compared with that of a reinforced concrete (RC) column with the same dimensions and steel ratio. Results demonstrate the superior performance of the CSC column, compared to the RC column in terms of residual load carrying capacity, and its potential for use as a key element in structural systems. The procedure and results presented herein can be used in the design and safety evaluation of key elements of multi-storey buildings for mitigating the impact of blast loads.

In order to model and simulate collapses of large scale complex structures, a user-friendly and high performance software system is essential. Because a large number of simulation experiments have to be performed, therefore, next to an appropriate simulation model and high performance computing, efficient interactive control and visualization capabilities of model parameters and simulation results are crucial. To this respect, this contribution is concerned with advancements of the software system CADCE (Computer Aided Demolition using Controlled Explosives) that is extended under particular consideration of computational steering concepts. As pontes em arco de alvenaria integram circuitos rodoviários fundamentais ao transporte de bens, serviços e pessoas. Estes circuitos têm sido desenvolvidos desde as primeiras civilizações até à atualidade e a sua expansão tem sido constante, alcançando cada vez mais destinos. As pontes surgem com a necessidade de ultrapassar obstáculos, como vales ou cursos de água, com facilidade e conforto. Assim, ao longo dos itinerários que unem gentes e lugares, e consoante as barreiras, são construídas pontes. Com a evolução dos materiais e técnicas de construção, as pontes em arco de alvenaria deixaram ser a técnica construtiva mais utilizada, perdendo o seu estatuto para o aço e o betão armado. The analysis of the structural failure of a reinforced concrete building caused by a blast load is presented in this paper. All the process from the detonation of the explosive charge to the complete demolition, including the propagation of the blast wave and its interaction with the structure is reproduced. The analysis was carried out with a hydrocode. The problem analysed corresponds to an actual building that has suffered a terrorist attack. The paper includes comparisons with photographs of the real damage produced by the explosive charge that validates all the simulation procedure.

Ubrzana izgradnja i urbanizacija može da stvori i probleme-većina novih urbanizovanih područja se nalaze u zemljama u razvoju koje uglavnom jako malo vode računa o izdržljivosti zgrada, i na taj način povećavaju rizik od rušenja objekata kod osnovnih pojava kao što su zemljotresi ili cikloni. Većina zemalja u razvijenom svetu ima izgrađen sistem za vanredne događaje, i to je u većini slučajeva osnova za dalje razvijanje. Poznata je činjenica da većina žrtava mora da bude spasena u prvim (kritičnim) časovima posle događaja a to odrađuju članovi lokalne zajednice. Pomoć kod treniranja, uključivanja vlasti lokalne zajednice, izradi i pripremi planova dobijaju od nas. Važnost izviđanja Faza izviđanja je kod ovakvih nesreća (rušenja objekata) jedno od najvažnijih stvari. Ako ova faza nije odrađena ili je pak loše odrađena, to će se onda bez sumnje odraziti na svaki sledeći korak u fazi spasavanja.
