Denita Benyshek is a professional artist and doctoral candidate in the psychology of spirituality and consciousness at Saybrook University. Benyshek shares the life events that led her to study at Saybrook. She describes the serendipitous meeting with her future mentor, Ruth Richards, an eminent scholar on creativity. A metaphor from chaos theory, the butterfly effect, illustrates how one comment from Richards led Benyshek into an international network of scholars, conference presentations, and publications. Mentors are compared with gifted educators and gifted mentorship is discussed. Saybrook University's role, as a gifted institutional mentor, is considered and recommendations are made, including an endowed chair in creative studies, teaching assistantships, conference travel grants, courses in professional practices, and additional support for the essay and dissertation proposal process. Benyshek also proposes a new, innovative program for Saybrook-a master of fine arts degree in transpersonal, humanistic, and socially transformative arts. Finally, ideas for future studies of mentorship are offered.

Dynamics of creative mental activity are examined in waking and dreaming processes which manifest beyond normative waking consciousness. Some consider such phenomena to be pathological or meaningless. Alternatively they may be viewed in new and healthier ways, in the context of adaptive mental controls, using nonlinear dynamical/chaos theory. The first example involves the innovativeness reported with mild mood elevation in bipolar mood disorders, linked to a compensatory advantage model of everyday creativity. With adequate controls, such mood elevation may open adaptive creative mental possibilities (in fact, for all of us). Tension between divergent and convergent thinking-as noted by J.P. Guilford, and common to many models of creative process-can further "edge of chaos" states and raise the odds of bifurcation to new and creative chaotic attractors. The second example involves REM sleep and dream phenomena, where the self-organizing brain coordinates the dream's component parts to generate unusual dream narratives. However fanciful, such divergent and condensed dream content may lead to creative insights and adaptive narratives (there are famous examples) in the light of day, when interpreted or further developed, by bringing convergent processing to divergent processing. In each case, one finds the abnormal is not necessarily pathological-and sometimes can be usefully exceptional. One consequence of a dynamical view and these examples is the need, in all of us, for greater openness to experience, and acceptance of a greater divergence of expression and behavior (vs. conformity) in ourselves, our culture, and our world.

Just as there are many cultures within the world, so also are there many practices, beliefs, myths, values, and traditions within each culture. These unique ways of being can often present challenging frames of reference that may prevent a whole perspective from being attained. This essay examines the contextual formation of culture and the fundamentals intricate to the search for universal values. An illumination is also provided upon some of the major and extreme forms of cultural practices that may pose difficulty in achieving such a goal.

Everyone has creativity, and it is central to survival itself; yet many don't know this. Furthermore, our human creativity not only keeps us alive but can help us learn what we are living for. Nonetheless, in our culture, creativity-and especially everyday creativity, our "originality of everyday life"-often goes under-recognized, underdeveloped, and under-rewarded (the 3 U's). Here are capacities, indeed a way of life, that can be both physically and psychologically healing, and not just for individuals, but for groups, cultures, and our greater environment. At Saybrook University, we are returning human creativity to its rightful place in the history of human growth and transformation, through inspired scholarship and dissemination. This article first describes the beginnings for one creativity scholar and the challenges of working off the beaten path-along with correction of misunderstandings about ways creativity contributes to mental health. It then moves to Saybrook University-a founding school in the crucial "third force" movement called humanistic psychology-where Dr. Richards fortunately became professor. Noted too are innovative Saybrook faculty and programs in creativity that have also pushed the mainstream and inspired Saybrook's amazing students. It is our privilege to mentor and encourage them. The contributions of Drs. Stanley Krippner and Steven R. Pritzker are noted in particular, as well as the burgeoning Creativity Studies programs including a Certificate program, M.A. degree and, recently, a Ph.D.-unique offerings in this country. Ways to preserve these advances and build further on them are mentioned. Last but not least, in the second half of this presentation, we hear directly from the future-from ten remarkable Saybrook students or alumni, who tell us, first, about ways in which Saybrook mentorship and offerings have inspired them, and then, going forth from Saybrook, about ways in which they are truly changing the world.

Indeed feminist spirituality belongs to the woman. However, a woman is not automatically attune with feminist spirituality if she is not aware of and open to. This case study presents that man can experience the feminist spirituality when he is open to that spirit. Because of the awareness and openness, the hidden qualities of his anima side is connected and transformed by the feminist spirituality of the participants of this study. Therefore, researcher believe that anyone who is aware of her and his feminist’s spiritual qualities can be connected with the spirit within and around that lead toward spiritual integration that bear fruit of transformation.

Every now and then an outstanding mentor and/or faculty member comes along that has the uncanny ability to lift and inspire students beyond their imagined reach. Willson Williams is one such leader. This paper provides a brief overview of this faculty member's contributions to the field, as well as her outstanding leadership as both a professor, mentor, and Director of the Institutional Review Board.

Harris Friedman has made a unique contribution to science by constructing the first explicitly transpersonal measure, helping to bring transpersonal psychology into the realm of more conventional science. He has also engaged in a wide range of professional activities during his career, including mentoring younger scholars and professionals. This paper consists of an introduction written by Fracasso on her experiences of being mentored in her graduate education by Friedman, as well as a statement written by Friedman on some of the factors that led to his interest in both transpersonal measurement and mentorship. It concludes with brief contributions by Douglas MacDonald and Zeno Franco, two scholars whom Friedman has helped in his role as a senior scholar. This paper illustrates how personal history can shape one's later academic interests, as well as the importance for science of passing on traditions across generational divides.

Os sonhos lúcidos são descritos como a consciência de estar sonhando durante o sonho e a capacidade de alterá-lo narrativamente. Uma breve introdução sobre tema será desdobrada, seguida pela análise de uma das características marcantes desse fenômeno: os personagens que habitam esse estado onírico, possuidores de um grau de autonomia e facilidade de comunicação surpreendente se comparados aos sonhos comuns. Na intenção de averiguar substrato psíquico dessas entidades autônomas será conduzida uma investigação sob a ótica da psicologia analítica, privilegiando o conceito Junguiano de “sombra” e a teoria dos complexos. Por fim, será destacada a importância dessa análise para o processo de individuação.

Eventification as a social trend has spawned a boom in autonomous events and places (zones), like festivals and free cultural spaces. This is becoming not only an industry, but a social phenomenon, where social and political change emerges. Burning Man, Ruigoord, Boom, Christiania and the history of autonomous initiatives (Hakim Bey) are discussed in a context of psychological and social needs, escapism, and the experience economy.

Louis Hoffman's contributions to the science of psychology are too numerous to list. In addition to his recent election to the office of APA Division 32 president, his growing international renown as an existential psychologist and dozens of publications, many early-career psychologists count Hoffman as a mentor and a profound influence. This paper describes some of his most significant contributions to the science of psychology, to people in general, and to the authors of this paper specifically.

This paper and study was originally inspired by Marta Ockuly and we collaborated around shared goals, using a clever Internet approach she designed.  The work shows us THAT HOW WE THINK ABOUT  CREATIVITY, WHAT WE IMAGINE AND VALUE IN THE PROCESS, AND HOW WE PICTURE OURSELVES, can make all of the difference.  Here are over 100 people, our research participants,  helping us look at ourselves too.

Psychedelic shamanism might be thought of primarily as a communication with Nature, for instance by asking the plants directly which ones can heal a particular illness, or by asking the plant spirit to teach them, or by using the plant in aiding the psychological metamorphosis into a plant or animal “allies.” Given that shamans have most likely been communicating with Nature in this way for thousands of years, it might well be asked what can be gained for humanity’s relationship with the ecosystem from such a dialogue and, perhaps more importantly, how can Nature benefit from this relationship?
