Spanish American colonial studies

The paper is based on the hypothesis that the Philippines was a territory colonized from New Spain and served as experience, accumulation, memory and practice for other spaces colonized from New Spain, mainly the North of Mexico and California. Although the Jesuits hegemonized the missionary-colonizing voice in those territories (the Philippines first, then the North), there were precedent ways of writing the natural history that the Jesuits knew, learned and, finally, appropriated and adapted. The paper presents one of the first attempts of writing the natural history of the Philippines, Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas – published in Mexico, in 1609, but written between 1595 and 1603 – to compare it with the first natural history of the Philippines produced by a Jesuit, Pedro Chirino, published in Rome, in 1604.
El trabajo parte de la hipótesis de que el archipiélago de las Filipinas, territorio colonizado desde la Nueva España, sirvió de experiencia, acúmulo, memoria y práctica para la colonización novohispana de otros territorios, señaladamente el Septentrión y las Californias. Si bien los jesuitas hegemonizaron la voz misional-colonizadora en esos territorios (Filipinas primero, el Norte después), antes hubo otros estilos, formas y maneras de escribir la historia natural que los jesuitas conocieron, aprendieron y, finalmente, se apropiaron y adaptaron. Trataremos de analizar uno de los primeros textos que plantean una forma de escribir la historia natural de las Filipinas, Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, de Antonio de Morga (publicada en México, en 1609, pero escrita entre 1595 y 1603) para compararla con la primera historia natural de las Filipinas hecha por un jesuita, la de Pedro Chirino, publicada en Roma, en 1604.

 El artículo analiza el protagonismo político adquirido por la plebe porteña luego de los sucesos del 25 de mayo de 1810, fecha en que se inició el proceso de independencia de Argentina. El elemento distintivo que identificó a este heterogéneo grupo social no fue el color, la etnia o la condición social, sino una vestimenta: el poncho, que por barato y sencillo fue el atuendo del pobre. Bien como milicia al servicio del Cabildo o integrante de las movilizaciones de cau-dillos que ambicionaban el poder, la plebe se convirtió en un verdadero desafío para la elite. Había que someterla política y socialmente, y eso solo se lograría recién a mediados de la década de 1820, cuando se le asoció con la vagancia, la delincuencia y el alcoholismo. No obstante, ello no acabó con su presencia en la política, ya que durante el régimen de Juan Manuel de Rosas renació como soporte del federalismo. Resumen: Con relación a la construcción, el crecimiento y la refundación de las ciudades en Hispanoamérica y, en concreto, valiéndose como caso de estudio del proyecto de una nueva Riobamba propuesto por Darquea, se ensaya aquí la aplicación de una triple concepción de los valores -- los comunicativos, los económicos y los sociales-- cada una dividida en desiderativos (desiderata) e imperativos: normas, ligaduras o deberes. Se desarrollan tres conceptos de ciudad (taxonómico, mereológico y reticular) que interdefinen ciudad y territorio, y se adopta el formato definicional morfo-teleológico de Burt G. Wilder para entender la noción de ciudad ilustrada en su contexto. Hecho esto, se examina cómo la concurrencia --armonista o conflictiva entre los valores involucrados en los deseos y exigencias de los sujetos actores-- influye en el rechazo del proyecto radial de Darquea y la realización del más asentado modelo hipodámico. Abstract: Concerning the construction, growth, and anew construction of cities in Spanish America, in particular taking as a case study Darquea's project of a new Riobamba, here is expounded an essay to apply a threefold conception of values --communicative, economic, and social-- each one of them divided into desirable (desiderata) and imperatives: norms, constraints or duties. The development of three concepts of city (taxonomic, mereological and reticular), which mutually implicate city and territory, is aided by the adoption of Burt G. Wilder's morpho-teleological definitional formula to understand the notion of an illustrated city within its context. Concurrence --harmonic of conflictive between values implicated in the desires and requirements of the acting subjects-- is studied regarding its influence on the dismissal of Darquea's radial project and the execution of the more traditional hypodamic model. Desarrollado desde la perspectiva de la antropología histórica, este artículo expone una revisión actualizada de la circulación de cuentas vítreas en Chile tras el momento de contacto hispano-mapuche acontecido en el siglo XVI. A partir de la comparación de fuentes historiográficas y evidencias arqueológicas, el trabajo plantea que dentro de la sociedad mapuche la introducción de tales artefactos no logró desplazar en el corto plazo el uso de cuentas locales o llangka, lo que se tradujo en la coexistencia de ambos tipos al menos hasta el siglo XIX.

Abstract: Developed from the perspective of historical anthropology, this article offers an updated review of the circulation of glass beads in Chile after the moment of Hispanic-Mapuche contact in the 16th century. Based on the comparison of historiographic sources and archaeological evidence, the work suggests that within the Mapuche society, the introduction of such artifacts did not displace the use of local beads or llangka in the short term, which resulted in the coexistence of both types at least until the 19th century.

This chapter discusses recent scholarship on Catalina de Erauso-'the Lieutenant Nun'-one of the more controversial figures of the early seventeenth century. Erauso fled from a convent at age fifteen; from then on, she dressed as a man and lived a life of travel, violence, and adventure. Her autobiography replicates the fluidity of her gender assignment, showing elements from different religious and secular writings. Both the person and the text are characterized by their defying of categorization. In Erauso, binary oppositions such as male/female, saint/sinner, Basque/ Spaniard seem to be subsumed. Erauso's Basque origin emerges as a key element for the understanding of her life, and her story becomes a privileged documentation of the Basque experience in America in the early modern era. In the early modern period, political borders were often in flux, and people were 'strongly aware of the potentially shifting, unstable nature of borders, which are arbitrary and political'. 1 This fluctuation, however, was not confined merely to political boundaries. Humans have long understood that edges-whether they be of countries, between the spiritual and the secular, and indeed between categories of classification and study-are, in 1 Hopkins, Renaissance Drama on the Edge, 106.

This book presents a provocatively new interpretation of one of New Orleans' most enigmatic traditions, the Mardi Gras Indians. By interpreting the tradition in an Atlantic context, Dewulf traces the " black Indians " back to the ancient Kingdom of Kongo and its war dance known as sangamento. He shows that good warriors in the Kongo kingdom were per definition also good dancers, masters of a technique of dodging, spinning and leaping that was crucial in local warfare. Enslaved Kongolese brought the rhythm, dancing moves and feathered headwear of sangamentos to the Americas in performances that came to be known as " Kongo dances. " By comparing Kongo dances on the African island of São Tomé with those in Latin America, the Caribbean and Louisiana, Dewulf demonstrates that the dances on New Orleans' Congo Square were part of a much broader Kongolese performance tradition. He links that to Afro-Catholic mutual-aid societies that honored their elected community leaders or " kings " with Kongo dances. While the public rituals of these brotherhoods originally thrived in the context of Catholic procession culture around Epiphany and Corpus Christi, they transitioned to carnival as a result of growing orthodoxy within the Church. Dewulf's groundbreaking research suggests a much greater impact of Kongolese traditions and of popular Catholicism on the development of African-American cultural heritage and identity. His conclusions force us to radically rethink the traditional narrative on the Mardi Gras Indians, the kings of Zulu and the origins of black participation in Mardi Gras celebrations.

Even though women had been historically underrepresented in official histories and literary and artistic traditions, their voices and writings can be found in abundance in the many archives of the world where they remain to be uncovered. The present volume seeks to recover women’s voices and actions while studying the mechanisms through which they authorized themselves and participated in the creation of texts and documents found in archives of colonial Latin America.

Resumen
El lazarillo de los ciegos caminantes es entendido aquí como un ejemplo de la literatura de viajes, conjugando un arte de viajar y un relato de viaje. La falsa atribución autoral y otros elementos del texto revelan una intención ficcional que, sin embargo, ofrece una tanto una teoría como una versión de la historia. Pese al carácter de viaje oficial (la ‘visita’), el narrador excede su función de reconocimiento y participa del clima de reformas modernizantes de fines de siglo XVIII con una doble estrategia de persuadir y proponer. La formación discursiva tradicional del ‘relato de viaje’, entonces, se ve resignificada como un modo de intervención en la realidad de un sujeto colonial comprometido a la vez con el espacio americano y la corona española.

Abstract
El lazarillo de los ciegos caminantes is understood here as an example of travel’s literature, both a traveler’s guide and a tale of travels. The false author and other aspects of the text reveals a will of writing a fiction that, nevertheless, offers both a theory and a version of history. In spite of the official nature of the travel (the ‘visita’), the narrator exceeds his function of surveillance and participates in the general ambience of modernizing reforms at the end of 18th century, with a double strategy of persuading and suggesting. The traditional discursive formation of the ‘travel’s tale’, then, receives a new meaning as a way of transforming the world of a colonial subject who is compromised with the American space and the Spanish Crown at the same time.

Este libro se centra en la configuración de las prácticas musicales en la ciudad de Asunción del Paraguay durante el período colonial. Los indígenas músicos de los pueblos de indios aledaños –los “indios cantores”–, cobraron protagonismo en la actividad musical urbana al ser trasladados desde la reducciones jesuíticas y pueblos de indios a cargo de curas seculares y franciscanos hasta Asunción para fiestas y celebraciones, propiciando la circulación de bienes, saberes y prácticas. Los esclavos afrodescendientes participaron, por su parte, en las prácticas musicales cotidianas de instituciones como el Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús. Sin los “indios cantores”, y sin las prácticas de movilidad que los situaban en uno y otro contexto, el modelo urbano institucional-musical no hubiese sido posible de mantener en este distante rincón del imperio.

The official history of Potosi and its 'discovery' is a tale that justifies Spanish dominion and control of the Red Mountain. In recent years, numerous works have begun to examine Potosi's past and the colonization of the region from new perspectives. These studies re-envision the connections between regional political relationships and the two historical invaders of the area, the Inka and the Spanish. Archaeological studies of sites of production have expanded our understanding of the process. This reconstruction of indigenous know-how and production techniques highlights the power struggles over control of silver production.

Virrey es el que hace las veces del rey. En los siglos XVI y XVII los reyes de la Casa de Austria poseyeron un conjunto de Estados cuya característica común era que el rey debía gobernarlos como si sólo fuera soberano de cada uno de ellos. Por tal motivo, en sus títulos, disposiciones y manifestaciones públicas los Austrias no se presentaban como reyes de España sino como reyes de Castilla, Aragón, Nápoles, Sicilia, Valencia y un largo etcétera. No se trataba de un simple formalismo simbólico; era una realidad que hizo que a lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII los soberanos hubieran de desdoblar y multiplicar la persona real tantas veces como fuera necesario. En este magnífico estudio se aborda esta peculiar forma de gobierno. Mediante un desarrollo cronológico se sigue la evolución de un sistema creado bajo el reinado de Carlos I y adaptado al gobierno de América al trasformar las colonias en reinos de Indias. Desde ese momento, la Monarquía Hispánica viviría bajo una doble tensión o contradicción, marcada por la aspiración a la unidad y la centralidad al tiempo que su legitimidad descansaba sobre su carácter compuesto y desconcentrado. Una contradicción que sólo pudo resolverse con la creación del Estado nacional en el siglo XIX y con la desaparición del virreinato.

El testamento de Micaela Villegas, más conocida como "La Perricholi", construye un yo escritural capaz de revelar tanto su vida privada como su vida pública, a través de un no-decir. Tal testamento, única fuente escritural de la actriz colonial, posibilita la convergencia de dos discursos que responden a la expectativa de la época: por un lado, se percibe la manera como una mujer, en el siglo XVIII, debía confesarse en los últimos días de su vida; pero, por otro lado, se puede rastrear un discurso enmarcado en un silencio. Esta contradicción sería parte de una tradición colonial femenina que emplea dicha escritura funeraria como vehículo revelador de confesiones, abusos o secretos. Bajo esta línea de investigación, la única fuente escrita de Micaela Villegas permite una lectura de un yo entre la letra escrita y el silencio detrás de la tinta.

New Spain’s northwestern province of Alta California constituted a frontier for the waning years of the Spanish empire’s imperial interests of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. For the founding colonists, however, California was a frontier for new beginnings. Through the examination of diverse primary sources, including census records and mission registers, the Interrogatorio de 1812, and an 1814 respuesta to the Interrogatorio by Fray Amorós, this paper examines colonial identity formation and its recontextualization on the frontier. It is this latter document by Father Amorós that in part serves to demonstrate that the utilization of the six casta
identifications ceased to be applicable to those colonial populations of the frontier. As such, this paper explores how it was that Alta California provided an opportunity for soldiers and settlers to reject the sistema de castas (caste system) practiced in New Spain in order to establish a
distinctive and more unified identity as gente de razón. In addition, this paper examines other incentives or pull-factors that motivated prospective soldiers and settlers to relocate to Alta California. The Spanish military settlement of El Real Presidio de San Carlos de Monterey, better known as the Royal Presidio of Monterey, herein serves as a case study. Ultimately, this study intends to contribute to the current scholarship on the history and presidial ethnogenesis of Monterey within the broader context of the Spanish colonial experience of the Provincias Internas, and Alta California in particular.

1. La conflictiva situación de la Española entre 1795 y 1808
La guerra entre España y la Convención se saldó con la cesión de la parte oriental de la isla de Santo Domingo a Francia, a cambio de la devolución de los territorios peninsulares ocupados por el ejército francés, según quedó estipulado en el tratado de Basilea, firmado el 22 de julio de 1795 entre ambos países. La situación de caos generalizado en que estaba sumida la parte francesa de la isla, debido al levantamiento de los esclavos y a las luchas desatadas entre los diversos grupos étnicos y sociales, provocó el aplazamiento sine díe de la entrega definitiva de la colonia por parte de las autoridades españolas a las francesas.
Sin embargo, las consecuencias de la noticia no se hicieron esperar, y un gran número de familias dominicanas abandonó la isla con destino a Puerto Rico, Cuba y Venezuela en un proceso migratorio que se incrementó cuando los soldados mandados por Toussaint Louverture, un antiguo esclavo convertido en general de la República francesa, entraron en Santo Domingo casi sin resistencia, en 1801, para tomar posesión del territorio que España había cedido a Francia. La expedición enviada por Napoleón a la Española en 1802, encabezada por el general Leclerc, no consiguió restablecer el orden, sino que perdió el control sobre la parte occidental
de la isla, en la que el dominio francés era ya más virtual que real, a diferencia de lo que sucedía en Santo Domingo, cuya población apoyó a las nuevas autoridades como una salvaguarda frente a sus belicosos vecinos del oeste.
Tras la proclamación de la independencia haitiana en 1804, la parte oriental permaneció bajo el poder de Francia, gobernada por el general Ferrand, quien no sufrió grandes contratiempos durante su mandato, hasta que en 1808 comenzaron a llegar a Santo Domingo las primeras noticias relativas a la invasión francesa de España. La abdicación de Carlos IV como consecuencia del motín de Aranjuez, y la proclamación de Fernando VII provocaron una crisis dinástica y política de la que se valió Napoleón, cuyas tropas habían penetrado en España con dirección a Portugal, para confinar en Bayona a toda la familia real, y poner en el trono español a su hermano José. A raíz del estallido de la sublevación popular contra la invasión francesa, en mayo de 1808, se produjo la consiguiente reacción en los territorios españoles de América, en pro de la causa del depuesto Fernando VII.
En este contexto de efervescencia política, el capitán general de Santo Domingo, Jean Louis Ferrand, dirigió una proclama a los habitantes de la colonia el 9 de agosto de 1808, que fue publicada en la Gaceta de Puerto Rico un mes más tarde. En ella, Ferrand se refería a las noticias recibidas sobre la situación de dicha isla, según las cuales esta se hallaba «embuelta (sic) en una fermentación política» que, en su opinión, solo podía «acarrear efectos siniestros y lamentables». El general francés se aventuró también a predecir que el huracán de inestabilidad que se avecinaba tal
vez asolaría «todas las posesiones españolas de América», y señaló que las causas del mismo eran «algunos movimientos de discordia y de desavenencia, [...] entre los franceses y los españoles de Europa». Acto seguido, Ferrand apelaba a estrechar «más que nunca los lazos de la unión, de la amistad y de la confianza entre los españoles y los franceses de la isla de Santo Domingo», a fin de «despreciar todo género de peligros, y destruir los infelices efectos del destrozo» que iba a «devastar las colonias españolas». Después de asegurar que los franceses y los españoles constituían «un solo pueblo de hermanos y de amigos», exhortó a la población
a que rechazase las instigaciones, «ya sean de afuera, ya sean del interior», y les conminó a detener a los que trataran de alterar el orden establecido. Al concluir, el gobernador insistió de nuevo en la conveniencia de esperar el final de las convulsiones de los territorios vecinos, sin comprometerse en ellas, poniendo como ejemplo de las desgracias que podían sobrevenirles «la experiencia de [...] los fatales acontecimientos que han hecho de la parte francesa de esta isla, un theatro (sic) de sangre y de horror».
La capitanía general de Puerto Rico, por su parte, insertó en la Gaceta de la misma fecha una serie de observaciones acerca de la proclama de Ferrand, a la que consideraba una demostración del terror que sentía el gobierno de Santo Domingo, rodeado de españoles que no podían dejar de serlo, pese a «hallarse oprimidos
baxo el duro y pesado yugo de una dominación extrangera (sic)». Además, se acusaba a dicho gobierno de difundir falsedades con objeto de engañar al pueblo, «y de mantenerlo quieto, siendo expectador (sic) tranquilo» de los acontecimientos que estaban teniendo lugar en España. En el texto de respuesta al comunicado del general francés se afirmaba asimismo que el único motivo de la fermentación política a la que aquél hacía referencia era «el grito universal de toda una nación» que no quería ser esclava. Finalmente, recordaba a los habitantes de Santo Domingo que habían
nacido españoles y que «el español jamás puede prescindir de serlo, y jamás se somete voluntariamente al yugo extranjero, ni menos se le ve apetecer el título de ciudadano de otra nación cualquiera».
Además de esta apelación final a la españolidad de los dominicanos, el gobierno de Puerto Rico ya había hecho llegar directamente a Santo Domingo otra proclama dirigida a sus habitantes, y firmada por «vuestros compatriotas los puerto-riqueños», en la que desmentía las palabras de Ferrand relativas a la situación interna de aquella isla, y denunciaba la invasión de la península por Napoleón, quien retenía a Fernando VII en Francia contra su voluntad. Una vez descritos los hechos, planteaba a la población dominicana la cuestión fundamental:
Vosotros soys (sic) españoles, lo habéis sido siempre: [...] esa isla ha pertenecido siempre a la España, y solo la necesidad y la falta de energía la hizo pasar a dominio extraño. Armaos pues contra vuestros opresores, uníos a nosotros, destruid por vuestra parte y romped las cadenas que os oprimen [...]. Nosotros os ayudaremos
y correremos a socorreros al primer aviso que nos deis de vuestros sentimientos patrióticos.
Para estimular dichos sentimientos, el gobierno de Puerto Rico recomendaba a los dominicanos leer los manifiestos llegados desde Europa, en los que podrían apreciar el ánimo con que el pueblo español se presentaba «en campaña para bolber (sic) la
independencia a su nación». La arenga terminaba con el anuncio de que si respondían al llamamiento de España, Santo Domingo nunca más volvería a ser «el juguete de las discordias», ni pertenecería a otro monarca que no fuera Fernando VII

En la génesis de las " relaciones " se cita su origen y primera circulación a partir del siglo XIII 1 entre los puertos comerciales y centros urbanos europeos en forma de " hojas escritas " dedicadas a informaciones sobre comercio. El mecanismo se sofistica con el tiempo: las noticias adquieren mayor complejidad, las hojas se reproducen por copistas, se traducen y adoptan una cierta periodicidad. A mediados del siglo XV aparece la imprenta, que multiplica y acelera esta difusión informativa, a la vez que aumentan los públicos lectores, crecen las ciudades o se consolida una primera burguesía mercantil, así como ámbitos letrados que ganan una creciente autonomía respecto a la corte. La revolución informativa se encuentra en plena efervescencia en el momento en que Fray Bartolomé de las Casas se enfrenta a una labor textual que recoge de un modo explícito tales cambios: 2 el lector de la Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias asiste a una recopilación de textos cuyo recorrido, desde su escritura hasta su publicación y posterior impacto internacional, expresa las profundas transformaciones de las nuevas políticas de la información. 3 Su trabajo toma partido en las reivindicaciones de un cuerpo letrado que demanda una mayor intervención sobre la corte y la formación de un espacio público representativo, además de teorizar sobre el " buen gobierno " entendido como la gestión racional del poder, hasta entonces mediado por relaciones de vasallaje y legitimidades de origen divino. El objetivo de este ensayo, por lo tanto, consiste en analizar los mecanismos discursivos y materiales (en cuanto a la producción y circulación del texto) que convierten a la Brevísima relación de la

This article attempts to identify the precise coins which were extant in the market of Montréal at the time of the transfer of authority from French to British governments, starting in 1760. Based on historical sources and shipwreck excavations, it finds these largely to be Spanish American and French. It also tries to determine the relative quantities of these coins, their origin, and the likely means of transmission from place of manufacture to place of use. The monetary situation of Montréal at that time set the stage for the development of Canada’s money in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Indeed, some vestiges of it were still in evidence at Confederation.

In the summer of 1991, St. Johns Expeditions, a Florida-based marine salvage company, discovered a shipwreck buried behind a shallow reef along the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank. The group contacted archaeologists to ascertain the significance of the discovery, and it was soon determined to be a Spanish ship dating to the 1500’s. The investigation of the shipwreck was entrusted to the author, working for the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society (MFMHS), a not-for-profit research center based in Key West, Florida. Between 1992 and 1999, the MFMHS conducted six excavations to examine and document the shipwreck. Careful analysis of the shipwreck shows that the sizeable vessel sailed between 1555 and 1575 and had touched at Tierra Firme (Colombia and Panama) before sinking during a return voyage to Spain.
    By comparing the archaeological evidence to the historical record, it becomes clear that the St. Johns shipwreck is the Santa Clara, a 300-ton Carrera de Indias galleon owned by the famed Spanish mariner Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. While returning to Spain in October of 1564, the ship grounded on a reef in the western Bahamas and could not be freed. Its cargo of silver and the people on board were safely removed to an accompanying vessel, and the Santa Clara was abandoned. With the identity and specific circumstances of the shipwreck known, it serves as an important touchstone in the understanding of the early Spanish colonial system.

This article features a connected history of punitive relocations in the Spanish Empire, from the independence of Spanish America to the " loss " of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines in 1898. Three levels of entanglement are highlighted here: the article looks simultaneously at punitive flows stemming from the colonies and from the metropole; it brings together the study of penal transportation, administrative deportation, and military deportation; and it discusses the relationship between punitive relocations and imprisonment. As part of this special issue, fore-grounding " perspectives from the colonies " , I start with an analysis of the punitive flows that stemmed from the overseas provinces. I then address punishment in the metropole through the colonial lens, before highlighting the entanglements of penal transportation and deportation in the nineteenth-century Spanish Empire as a whole.

Between 1472 and 1572, the conquests of Peru were many: by the Inca, who in the 15th century spread from their southern Andean heartland in Cusco to build an empire that stretched from what is now southern Colombia to northern Chile and Argentina; by the Spanish conquistadors under the leadership of Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro, who reached down from Panama in search of the rumored wealth of the kingdom of " Birú " and fatefully encountered the aspirant Inca emperor Atahualpa at Cajamarca in November of 1532; by the Spanish crown, which intervened after the revolt of Atahualpa's brother Manco Inca in 1536 and the rebellion of the conquistadors in the 1540s; and by the Inca's former subjects, the Spaniards' Indian allies, and their mestizo sons, who ended independent Inca resistance by helping to capture Atahualpa's nephew in the Vilcabamba valley in 1572. This essay sketches the century-long arc of those many conquests, which together yielded a historical entity not quite like any other in the early modern world, let alone Americas: a composite Spanish-Indian kingdom whose incredible wealth lay not just in the gold and silver that its mines and burials produced but in the network of subjects and laborers that drew both the Inca and their Habsburg successors on to further conquests than was wise.

An examination of the people onboard the 1622 galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita and the disaster that befell them. In September of 1622, the Spanish Tierra Firme fleet was struck by a hurricane one day after it had left Havana, Cuba. The twenty-eight ships were battered by the storm, and seven of them were sunk near the Florida Keys. The disaster was a tremendous loss for Spain, with hundreds of people killed and valuable cargoes dashed to the bottom of the sea. This study is centered on an account of the tragedy that was written in Havana in November of 1622, which details the disaster and the people on the galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita. This relation is supplemented by other, more detailed lists of people found in the Archives of the Indies in Seville. Further investigations into the individual life-histories of those on the two doomed galleons give a fuller understanding of who these people were, why they were sailing, and how their presence is sometimes recognized in the archaeological record.

The author introduces the reader to the bloody history of the fraternity of the bartero - with its traditions, customs and secret language.
In addition, the book includes two previously unpublished Spanish knife-fighting manuals of the early 20th century with unique photos.

"The Monetization of Silver in China: Ming China and Its Global Interactions," China’s Development from a Global Perspective (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2017), pp. 274-296.


It is widely held that the sixteenth century was the beginning of broad economic globalization. As a typical case, the monetization of silver during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) was part of the story of this globalization. In China, copper coins had been the ancient circulated currency for more than one thousand years since the Qin unified the whole country and minted these copper coins with a characteristic square hole. China is also the country that first invented and used paper money. This situation continued until the Ming, when silver eventually began to replace copper coins as the standard currency. However, the monetization of silver was a complicated, unusual process. During the early Ming, it was forbidden to exchange silver and gold, and they were not viewed as legal currencies. One prominent piece of evidence is that when we read Ming huidian (The Great Ming Code), we can find a “Law of Paper Money” (chaofa) and a “Law of Copper Coin” (qianfa), but we cannot find a “Law of Silver” (yinfa). This clearly indicates thatsilver was not an official currency during the early Ming. There were, therefore, no formal institutions or regulations for silver at all. During the whole social development of the late Ming, silver was nevertheless used across the entire society. It transitioned from an illegal currency to a legal one, and then developed as the standard currency and came, ultimately, to occupy the dominant position in the field of currency circulation. It was, to say the least, a most unusual monetization process.
