Введение Примордиализм-это научный концепт, рассматривающий группо-вое единство как «изначальное» объединение людей по крови, по родству или по таким характеристикам, как: язык, культура, расовые характери-стики… и т.д.-и используются в разных сферах гуманитарных наук. Главной задачей этой статьи является исследование практического применения примордиализма в различных сферах гуманитарных наук по следующим трем позициям. Первая-«примордиализм» в сфере философской концепции социального конструкционизма, как предмет теории национализма. Вторая-«примордиализм» как предмет этнической социологии или ethnicity, которая основана на мнении групповых взаимоотноше-ний и взаимодействий. Третья-«примордиализм» как предмет социологии, которая основана на исследовании-«качество социальных связей и обще-ственных единений».

В настоящий том вошли ранее не публиковавшиеся статьи и полевые этнографические заметки по истории и культуре шорцев и других тюркоязычных народов Саяно-Алтая одного из крупнейших отечественных тюркологов XX века Надежды Петровны Дыренковой (1899–1941).
Книга снабжена биографическим очерком о Н.П. Дыренковой, библиографическим списком ее работ, а также указателями и иллюстрациями из сибирского собрания МАЭ РАН.
Для этнологов, лингвистов, фольклористов, культурологов, религиоведов, всех интересующихся абори- генными культурами Сибири.

ÖZET Yakın zamana kadar batıda Bromley ile ilgili çalışmaların büyük bir bölümü Bromley'in metodolojisinin ilkçi olduğunu vurgulamakta idi. Fakat unutulmamalıdır ki batıda yapılan bu çalışmalar etniste kavramı üzerinden yürütülmektedir. Ayrıca Rus etnoloji okulunda kullanılan etnos ve etniçnost' mefhumları özelikle Anglosakson batı literatürü ile denklik sorunları olan mefhumlardır. Bu mefhumlardan etniçnost' etnik gruplar arasındaki ilişki için kullanılırken, etnos kavramı ise etnik grupların tarihsel boyutuna yoğunlaşarak etnogenez olgusunu ön plana çıkarmaktadır. Günümüzde bu iki olgu Rusya Federasyonu'nda (etno) sosyoloji ve (etniçeskaya) sosyoloji olmak üzere iki farklı ders olarak okutulmaktadır. Konu bu açıdan tekrar ele alındığında, batıda Bromley ile yapılan çalışmaların sorgulanması gerektiğini düşünmekteyiz. Bu makalenin amacı Bromley'in metodolojisinin dinamik bir sistem içerisinde tasarlandığını okuyucuya göstermektir. Bu dinamik yapıyı daha iyi anlatabilmek için Bromley'in metodolojisini dikey ve yatay bir diyagram üzerinde ele almaktayız. Etnik bilincin anahtar rol oynadığı dikey taksonomik seviyede sub-etnos, etnos ve meta etnik topluluklar incelenirken bu mefhumlar ile ilişkili olarak etnografik grup ve tarihî etnografik alan gibi mefhumlarda ele alınmaktadır. Diğer taraftan yatay düzlemde ise insanlık tarihi ekonomik parametrelere göre kesitlere ayrılarak dönemin koşullarında ortaya çıkan etnik sistemler kabile, halk, millet olarak incelenmektedir. В данной статье автор анализирует основные теоретические подходы российской этнологической (этнографической) школы в сравнении с подходами англоязычных школ. В качестве предмета исследования выбраны российские понятия «этнос» и «этничность» в сравнении с западным понятием Ethnicity. Различия между трактовками позволяют понять исследовательские акценты, которые подразумевают авторы, исследуя этнические явления и процессы в конкретных регионах, в том числе в Туве.   
Сравнение трактовок основных терминов этнологии в российской и англоязычной традициях показывает  разницу теоретических подходах. В российской традиции через понятие «этнос» рассматривается внутренняя структура  этноса, в которой такие области и темы, как этнопсихология и этническое самосознание, становятся центральными, имеющими различные теоретические перспективы. А понятие «этничность» предполагает анализ взаимодействия и взаимоотношения между разными этническими группами и проблему идентификации.
Термин Ethnicity в западной традиции основан на самоидентификации и идентификации других «Мы — они» и групповом взаимоотношении. Исследователи подчеркивают, что в английском языке нет такого слова, которое соответствует понятию этнической группы. Понимание Ethnicity имеет три основных подхода: конструктивизм, инструментализм и примордиализм. В последние годы на Западе появилось «гибридное», синтезированное понимание, которое объединяет «примордиализм» и «конструктивизм» под названием «конструктивный примордиализм». Оно  фиксирует усиление роли этнических и расовых идентичностей (примордиальные характеристики) в рамках разных социальных структур под интенсивным групповым взаимодействием.
Эти различия теоретических подходов важны прежде всего для понимания сути и конкретного содержания этнических и этносоциальных процессов представителями разных научных традиций, а также для анализа научных проблем конкретных этносов и этнических характеристик разных социумов.

Настоящая статья рассказывает об экспедиции Георгия Николаевича и Екатерины Дмитриевны Прокофьевых к большеземельским ненцам и их опыте съёмок документальной кинохроники. Кинохроника Прокофьевых представляет собой уникальный документ визуальной антропологии самодийцев. На основании имеющих архивных документов высказано предположение, что съемки осуществлялись за счёт договора о сотрудничестве, подписанного между Францем Боасом и Владимиром Богоразом в Нью-Йорке в 1928 г.
В статье проводится реконструкция полевого опыта Г. Н. Прокофьева и его оценок ранней истории коллективизации. В этой связи кинохроника вместе с коллекцией фотографий, сделанных ими же в «поле», выступают визуальной концептуализацией.
Имеющиеся на сегодняшний день исследования по визуальной антропологии в СССР дают основания говорить, что документальная кинохроника Прокофьевых, снятая в 1929-1930 гг. является первой хроникой, снятой в Советской Арктике этнографами.

The features of ethnic mapping of the Caucasus in the Atlas of the peoples of the world and in the Atlas of Georgian SSR are examined. The basic methods of distortion of ethno-demographical realities of the Caucasus are revealed and analyzed.

Although Siberian ethnography was an open and international field at the turn of the 20th century, from about 1930 until the late 1980s Siberia was for the most part closed to foreigners and therefore to Western ethnographers. This allowed Soviet ethnographers to establish a virtual monopoly on Siberian field sites. Soviet and Western anthropology developed during that period in relative isolation from one another, allowing methodologies and theoretical approaches to diverge. During glasnost' and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Siberian field was reopened and field studies were conducted by several Western ethnographers. The resulting encounter between Western and former Soviet ethnographers in the 1980s and 1990s produced a degree of cultural shock as well new challenges and opportunities on both sides. This is an experiential account of the mood of these newly reunited colleagues at the turn of the 21 st century.

The history of anthropology is inseparable from the histories of local communities and field co-operators of anthropologists themselves. As is known, long-term ethnographic fieldwork, with its engagements with local/Indigenous people, blurs the line between an epistemically pre-given subject/object divide and consequently makes anthropological knowledge equally belonging to scholars and to their field partners. Those entanglements, among other things, affect the conceptualisations of Indigenous subjectivities in a relational field of local socio-natural environments, human and non-human agencies, and dialogues with visitors (scholars and traders). In the present paper, I aim to show that relationality through the life history of Altai shepherd, shaman, actor (and not only) Kondrat Tanashev (1885-1937) from the South Siberian borderlands of Russia. Fragments of his autobiography, letters to ethnographers, drawings, and other authorised sources make his biography a truly unique case for demonstrating the entanglements of ethnography with local people. By bringing his previously neglected life history to the discussions on the history of anthropology, I invite anthropologists and historians to take a step towards the decolonisation of anthropology’s knowledge production in Siberia, and also to show the degree to which Tanashev’s subjectivity was shaped through his personal engagements with two generations of Siberian anthropologists: late imperial and early Soviet. Tanashev’s very deep knowledge of Altai practices and ideologies, tough living conditions, constant conflicts with the authorities, and keen interest in other-than-local ways of living made him a great guide for a range of field ethnographers. Judging from the publications, field notes, and letters, the latter aimed not only to conceptualise the Altai sacred landscape but also – paternalisticly – to situate Tanashev and other similar local characters in it. Long-term interactions with ethnographers, along with exposure to changes in early Soviet (state) anthropology – including its deep involvement in the ‘affirmative actions’ on the margins of a newly born country (Anderson 2000; Martin 2001; Hirsch 2005) –, could not but affect Tanashev’s subjectivity. He was identified with various (at times mutually exclusive) religious groups in the region as well as with Soviet power. The reverse side of those very intricate relations resulted in tragedy: he was charged with belonging to a new Altai religious movement and eventually murdered in an NKVD prison. By tracing the life history of Kondrat Tanashev in his dialogue with field ethnographers, I also examine the relational entanglements of religious and political life in Altai in the early 20th century and the anthropological concepts they consequently produced.

While critically examining Soviet circumpolar ethnography today, scholars may notice two distinct directions in its development. On one hand, Soviet ethnographers assisted the state in its aim to construct the “new [Soviet] way of living” and delineate ethnic borders in the North, thereby discrediting Indigenous groups as peoples without history. On the other hand, they demonstrated a profound interest in the relatively understudied history of Indigenous peoples. On closer examination, however, these appear surprisingly intertwined, shaping complex epistemologies that I attempt to elucidate in this chapter. One such “invisible” connection between Soviet ethnography and Arctic Indigenous peoples was the subterranean world: narratives about underground dwellers—humanlike creatures known by different names—that many Indigenous communities share, and the way those stories (and the material artifacts assigned to them) have affected the development of anthropological theories, in particular the Soviet theory of ethnogenesis. I argue that the narratives, in their vernacular forms and academic “translations,” led to the construction of a peculiar concept of Indigeneity that dealt with the stories about underground dwellers. Ethnographers’ guides and interlocutors in the field shared narratives about people who used to inhabit their lands, and who continued to be present in their lives through both abandoned material (archaeological) artifacts and the stories of encounters with them, while scholars trained in the evolutionistic paradigm searched for the most ancient groups in Siberia, whose material traces might reveal the deeper history of the region. This idea of origin caused them to collaborate and conduct interdisciplinary studies where research objects of different natures might coalesce and be at the center of academic reflections. The intersection of these two approaches constituted the epistemic core of ethnogenesis as a dominant theoretical framework in Siberian ethnography. As I show in this chapter, local people and visiting scholars grew their roots in the subterranean, or in other words, they made the subterranean landscapes the “most” Indigenous on the northern Indigenous land.

This article undertakes a critical retrospective of the symbolic appropriation process through which Soqotra was constituted as an imaginative geography, embodying the strategic desiderata of states as well as the ideational fantasies of men over millennia. The island’s location on the threshold of continents (Africa and Arabia), and on a cardinal node on the sea-lanes linking the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea and beyond, subjected its internal dynamics to the maelstrom of events in the larger world. Moreover, its physical isolation endowed it with an endemic biodiversity that has spurred reveries about the lost Garden of Eden, and made it a coveted haven for a mosaic of human aspirations. The article examines the strategic interests pursued, and the appropriating discourses deployed, by the European powers vying for political and economic hegemony at the different historical periods surveyed here: Antiquity, Portuguese, British, Soviet and the recent adoption of a United Nations brokered environmental regime for Soqotra. Finally, it draws out the ramifications of this strategic entanglement and symbolic appropriation process on Soqotra’s estimated 50,000 inhabitants at the present historical conjuncture.

This article traces how a multi-generation book project on ‘the Peoples of Siberia’ enabled a group of Leningrad-based scholars to reshape their museum into a Soviet ethnographic community.  It analyses the face-to-face performances, the legalistic stenographic documentation, the collective crafting of a single authoritative style, and a unique temporal frame as an important background to understanding a hallmark volume in Siberian studies.  It further examines how a set of nested gatherings (zasedanii͡a, soveshchanii͡a) were key in authorizing knowledge. The authors argue that the published volume indexes nearly thirty years of scholarly debates as much as it indexes the peoples it represents.  The gradual recalibration of Tsarist ethnography from 1929 to 1956 is illustrated with examples taken from debates held during the consolidation of Soviet power, the Stalinist period and during official ethnographic engagement during the Second World War. The article concludes with a critical discussion of how this volume was translated and received by a Euro-American readership influencing the perception of Siberian peoples internationally, and with an overview of contemporary post-Soviet publication projects which seem to recapitulate the path of building scientific communities through collective publishing projects. The authors argue that this early Soviet example demonstrate a collective and community interest in how ethnographic facts are generated. The article is based on extensive archival work and references collections recently discovered and which are presented for publication here for the first time.

This article is on the recognition of the Dolgans as an official nationality in the USSR. Sometimes, scholars consider that the Dolgan people appear between the second half of the 19th century and the 1960’s. What does it mean? How can a people appear? Are the Dolgan people a creation of Soviet administration? Or were they a forgotten people?

Богораза и его коллеги Л.Я. Штернберга в развитие петербургского североведения, а также двойственность фигуры Богораза — «двуликого Януса», как он сам себя называл.

Статья посвящена значению понятия «Русский Север» в контексте российской, а за-тем советской национальной политики, и особенностям его использования в этнографической практике XIX-XX вв. Наиболее распространенная до конца XIX в. категория «русский Север» была инструментом символического присвоения инородческой территории в имперском дискурсе, позволявшим описать обширное и плохо освоенное пространство в национальных терминах. Изобретение собственно Русского Севера относится к началу XX в., когда меняются его воображаемые географические границы, а сам регион начинает восприниматься как заповедник русского народного духа и традиции. Деление русского народа на северно-, южно-и среднерусских, ставшее основой советской этнографии, не получило политического воплощения. Тем не менее конструирование облика и культуры отдельных групп русских осуществлялось по той же модели, какая использовалась для описания этносов. Ретроспективный поворот в советском обществе 1960-1970-х гг. привел к реанимации образа Русского Севера как заповедника русской народности, архаики и культуры, который, несмотря на критику 1970-1980-х гг., по-прежнему остается одним из самых востребованных топосов национального воображения.
