Recent research on software revenue and pricing models has revealed important ways in which firms can benefit from software renting. However, it is still unclear how SaaS providers select a proper revenue and pricing model to make their services attractive for customers. Based on 32 interviews with software professionals from four case firms, this study reveals how different factors impacted on the selection of a revenue and pricing model. It can be concluded that customers’ needs were the main driving force to the selection of the most appropriate pricing and revenue model in the market.

I encourage you to read these introductory chapters carefully. They contain important insight that just might make the difference between a "hire" and a "no hire:' And remember-interviews are hard! In my years of interviewing at Google, I saw some interviewers ask "easy" questions while others ask harder questions. But you know what? Getting the easy questions doesn't make it any easier to get the offer. Receiving an offer is not about solving questions flawlessly (very few candidates do!). Rather, it is about answering questions better than other candidates. So don't stress out when you get a tricky question-everyone else probably thought it was hard too. It's okay to not be flawless. Study hard, practice- and good luck!

Independent software vendors need to grow beyond their domestic markets. Software producing organizations are faced with a great number of options and opportunities on how they choose to conduct internationalization. Interestingly, efforts conducted have a high failure rate and software companies rarely succeed at first. In this paper we present a systematic mapping study and the results of 20 interviews with CEOs in the Dutch software sector. This study highlights the most important decisions made during the process of internationalization: the drivers, the process planning, market selection, and the followed market entry strategy. The choices available to the key decision makers in the right market selection and entry strategy are most strongly influenced and limited by the product architecture, characteristics of the product and company, and the level of internationalization experience located within the independent software company. The findings from this research support decision making in internationalization projects by software firms and policy makers in finding support strategies for export missions.

In IT companies, people are relevant the most relevant asset in the chain value, it is mandatory to have efficient HR management for their sustainability.
In order to validate the Hypothesis "Are non-financial factors more important than financial ones in Talent retention?" an investigation and survey were carried out by 196 professionals.
Even being impossible to obtain a clear and strong answer to the hypothesis, it was, however, possible to conclude that the payroll is an important factor for 90% of the surveyed, where also 65% already considered changing companies due to salary issues. However, when asked about the incentives that they most valued, the choice of 98% fell on non-financial benefits.
It is also concluded that there are positive correlations between the participation in the definition of processes that affect the worker’s function, age and longevity in the company; and negative correlations between recognition, career progression and HR policy.

This paper investigates small and medium-sized software firms’ success factors in the Japanese market. Findings of this study suggest that, due to the immaterial nature of software products, distribution and packaging has a less important role, while understanding Japanese business practices is ranked high along with customer satisfaction, honesty, and characteristics of a product. The findings also highlight the importance of distinguishing different kinds of software businesses based on their product strategies when analyzing success factors in a target country. For instance, the Japanese language assumed an important role in enterprise solution firms and in mass market software business, while its role in tailor-made software solution firms was less visible.

There is a wide range of available biological databases developed by bioinformatics experts, employing different methods to extract biological data. In this paper, we investigate and evaluate the performance of some of these methods in terms of their ability to efficiently access bioinformatics databases using web-based interfaces. These methods retrieve bioinformatics information using structured and semi-structured data tools, which are able to retrieve data from remote database servers. This study distinguishes each of these approaches and contrasts these tools. We used Sequence Retrieval System (SRS) and Entrez search tools for structured data, while Perl and BioPerl search programs were used for semi-structured data to retrieve complex queries including a combination of text and numeric information. This paper presents a software product quality evaluation model based on the ISO/IEC 25010 quality model. The evaluation characteristics and sub characteristics were identified from the ISO/IEC 25010 quality model. The multidimensional structure of the quality model is based on characteristics such as functional suitability, performance efficiency, compatibility, usability, reliability, security, maintainability, and portability, and associated sub characteristics. Random numbers are generated to establish the decision maker's importance weights for each sub characteristics. Also, random numbers are generated to establish the decision matrix of the decision maker's final scores for each software product against each sub characteristics. Thus, objective criteria importance weights and index scores for datasets were obtained from the random numbers. In the proposed model, five different software product quality evaluation datasets under three different weight vectors were applied to multiple criteria decision analysis method, preference analysis for reference ideal solution (PARIS) for comparison, and sensitivity analysis procedure. This study contributes to provide a better understanding of the application of MCDMA methods and ISO/IEC 25010 quality model guidelines in software product quality evaluation process.

This paper seeks to find a correlation between the valuation of software as a service (SaaS) companies and the price-setting practices and pricing strategies utilised. The focus is to assess the pricing techniques employed by the leading SaaS companies, and to identify a correlation with their corporate valuations. Financial data from 18 publicly traded companies was used to apply 14 different valuation methods. The purpose of this paper is to identify those pricing techniques that most influenced corporate valuations. This study discovered that there were identifiable correlations between the price-setting practices, the pricing strategies, and the pricing models. The insights uncovered as a result of this paper are important contributions to the valuation of SaaS companies as a whole, as well as to the pricing techniques utilised in the leading companies. Implications of the price-setting practices and pricing strategies are better understood in terms of their impact on company success.

MVC stands for model view controller. This software design pattern creates applications in a modular design separating the tasks into three separate programming modules or areas. The idea has existed historically for decades and according to Wikipedia model-view-controller was introduced in the 1970’s at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. MVC can be used in desktop applications, web development projects and in embedded software applications as well.

Although a software engineer could use a similar approach in almost any object oriented programming language for both desktop applications and web applications, it is in recent years that MVC is becoming popular for web applications.

Modern economies and ever-changing customer desires to create the constant challenges for enterprises to be innovative and find new ways of making their operations more efficient. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a system that offers a solution to this problem. The purpose of this research project is to examine the effects of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems on the financial performance of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Wrexham County. Further, the study sought to evaluate the moderating effects of SMEs factors on profitability and examined SMEs factors affecting the relationship between ERP systems and financial performance in Wrexham County SMEs.

Software development paradigms help a software developer to select appropriate strategies to develop software projects. They include various methods, procedures, and tools to describe and define the software development life cycle (SDLC). The waterfall and iterative models are two useful development paradigms, which have been used by various software developers in the last decades. This paper proposes a new software development methodology, called waterative model, which applies an integration of the waterfall and iterative development paradigms. In this model, the iterative model is embedded into the waterfall model to use the advantages of both models as an integrated one. It, in the most cases, is appropriate for large software products that need a long-term period of time for the development process. Experimental results demonstrate that the customer satisfaction score could be high by using the proposed model in various software projects.

In the new era of computing, SaaS software with different architectural characteristics might be priced in different ways. Even though both pricing and architectural characteristics are responsible for the success of the offering; the relationship between architectural and pricing characteristics has not been studied before. The present study fills this gap by employing a multi-case research. The findings accentuate that flexible and well-designed architecture enables different pricing models; however, poorly designed architecture limits also the pricing. Scalability and high level of modularity are the major enablers of a great variety of pricing models. Using public cloud services may lead to introducing usage-based pricing or in the contrary, making the pricing simpler. Applying multi-tenancy lowers the customizability, consequently the customers’ negotiation power decreases. Pricing may give special requirements to the architectural design, such as scalability, customizability and additional components.

Currently, cloud services have global yearly volume of $50-60 B, which is about 2 percent of global ICT industry. IT industry cloud services had global volume of $17.4 M in 2009, which was about 2 percent of global IT services and software business.
In transition to the cloud, the success of software company is dependent on whether it can recognize a sustainable position in the new industry structure and whether in can reach the position.
The major new strategic risks related to cloud are the reduced lock-in of customers, and longer investment payback periods. The major new operational risk is the increased dependency on suppliers.

Difficulties arise when conceptual modeling lacks ontological clarity and rigorous definitions, which is especially the case in the relationship construct. Evidence shows that use of relationships is often problematic when it comes to communicating the form of meaning of an application domain. Research on this topic is important because relationships are central to a number of approaches and commonly used by practitioners. In this paper, we study the notion of relation or relationship in the context of conceptual modeling. Specifically, we focus on the notion of relationship used in the entity-relationship (ER) model. The ER model is scrutinized through a new form of conceptual modeling called the thinging machine (TM) to pursue further understanding of the semantics of the relationship concept. The ER model is composed of three fundamental categories (i.e., entity, relationship and attribute), whereas TM is built from one ontological category called the thing/machine (thimac). Several ER diagrams are re-cast as TM diagrams, creating a categorical collision with interesting implications regarding the status of the conception of relationship in a conceptual model. The re-modeling shows that the relational construct is dissipated into TM flows of things and chronology of events.

This paper details the use of the IT Infrastructure Library Framework (ITIL) for optimising process workflows in the IT Service Centre of Harz University in Wernigerode, Germany, exemplified by the Release Management Process. It is described, how, during the course of a special ITIL project, the As-Is-Status of the various original processes was documented as part of the process life cycle and then transformed in the To-Be-Status, according to the ITIL Best Practice Framework.

It is also shown, how the ITIL framework fits into the four-layered-process model, that could be derived from interviews with the universities IT support staff, and how the various modified processes interconnect with each other to form a value chain. The paper highlights the final results of the project and gives an outlook on the future use of ITIL as a business modelling tool in the IT Service Centre of Harz University. It is currently being considered, whether the process model developed during the project could be used as a reference model for other university IT centres.

Cloud computing brings new possibilities, allowing software firms to sell their software products using the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. SaaS provides opportunities for flexible pricing but creates challenges on how to achieve a profitable revenue stream. In this multicase study, the revenue models of five SaaS providers were examined. The main interest of the study was to investigate the different revenue models and the reasons for using particular revenue models. The revenue models were found to
be mainly based on software renting, with a variety of pricing strategies. For SaaS providers, software renting generates a steady and predictable stream
of revenue. The software renting model is also attractive to customers because (i) it facilitates prediction of the actual costs of the software, (ii) it
decreases initial investments costs, and (iii) it makes it possible to purchase the software without special budgeting or the approval of top management. Interestingly, none of the firms used the commonly cited pay-per-use model.

In this study, we investigate the state of the literature and practice about Value-Based Requirements Engineering. We focus on identifying what models for VBRE were presented and what challenges were discussed. We triangulate our results with industrial practitioners by conducting an industrial survey with 59 respondents. We identified 26 primary and 3 secondary studies and synthesized the findings using content analysis. VBRE was identified to be having a positive impact among survey practitioners. However, challenges like aligning product, project and organization opinions, selecting a most valuable requirement for a particular release, and including time-dependent requirements were identified to be impacting the organizations. The results from the study also suggest that, value dimensions like stakeholder value and customer value were not so frequently discussed in RE processes in both literature and among our industry respondents.

In the existing literature, the Japanese market is often characterized with different barriers to entering and doing business. Although these barriers are well documented and researched, earlier investigations focus mainly on barriers related to manufacturing firms, conflicts with distribution channels or give only a general description of the barriers. Most of the previous studies are also cross-industrial and they lack an industry-specific focus. However, almost no research exists on what kinds of challenges foreign small and medium-sized software firms have encountered in the Japanese market. In this research, a multi-case study method was used to investigate the kinds of challenges four small and medium-sized Finnish software firms have encountered in the Japanese market. The findings of this research suggest that it seems to be more reasonable to analyze entry barriers in the software industry at the micro-level rather than using macro-level analyses, as proposed in earlier studies. In this study, a new framework has been developed to analyze the entry barriers. The new framework suggests that barriers for entering and operating in the market are related to the organization, sales process, and the target industry segment. Thus, there seems to be switch from regulatory barriers to requirements set by the business model used.

Software-as-a-Service providers have been growing fast while the contemporary research literature has neglected analysis of their business-critical marketing and sales processes. In this paper we collect the key factors characterizing how to market and sell SaaS to business customers into an eight dimensional model. We also use an explorative multi-case study to observe six SaaS providers and validate the model. The interviewed providers emphasized use of the Internet for marketing communication while personal direct sale was the dominating sales approach. Customer acquisition cost was the key performance indicator for marketing and sales while customer lifetime value and churn were the KPIs in customer relationship management.

As the cost of data storage reduces, the amount of data generated is increasing day by day. These data have useful information that could create a positive impact on businesses, research areas and related fields. Due to this, the investment on data is increasing rapidly. Effective visualization and summary of these continuously generated data is important. There are several data visualization media available at present.
However most of these tools are either expensive, require configuration or their free online tools are public, which may be a privacy concern for some users.
HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language) has several assets that could be used for developing data visualization applications. Canvas is an HTML5 element which is used to draw graphics. Similarly, two dimensional vector graphics could also be drawn using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). SVG is an XML based markup language. Open-source JavaScript charting libraries such as d3.js are developed under SVG. HTML5 also has APIs such as webStorage and IndexedDB, which are useful for storing data on
a browser.
There are several JavaScript frameworks and libraries, which could help the development phase to be easier and simple. AngularJS is a JavaScript framework which is used to build singe-page web applications. Libraries such as d3.js, underscore.js have several functions that help to manipulate row data and convert it to useful information or convert the data into a format used by charting libraries. D3.js, chart.js are libraries
used for drawing charts and graphics on a web application. By combining HTML5, native JavaScript methods and libraries one can develop a customizable offline dashboard.
This thesis suggests a development of an open source customizable offline dashboard framework using JavaScript and HTML5 technologies. There are several JavaScript libraries and HTML5 features that could be used to develop a fully functional browser based client side dashboard framework. As a result, Customizable-Dash framework has been developed. This framework is developed using only HTML5 and JavaScript technologies, and it runs on a browser independent of the Internet or server side programs. Customizable-Dash could be used to create a dashboard from JSON data source. The size of the data source could reach up to 5MB.
This thesis has shown that we can develop a customizable, fully functional and easy to use, client side dashboard that can run on a browser independent of the Internet or any server using only JavaScript and HTML5.
