Severinus of Noricum

In der Spätantike wurden am norischen Donaulimes, dessen Verteidigungslinie seit der flavischen Zeit unverändert blieb, die mittelkaiserzeitlichen Lager und Kastelle adaptiert. Viele von ihnen wurden unter Diokletian und Konstantin – einhergehend mit grundlegenden Reformen  in der römischen Heeresorganisation und der Neurekrutierung der in Mautern stationierten legio I Noricorum – mit nach außen ragenden Fächer- und Hufeisentürmen  verstärkt. Wesentliche Veränderungen in der Baugeschichte können in die Regierungszeit des Kaisers Valentinianus I. gesetzt werden, als dieser noch einmal das Grenzschutzsystem des Reiches umfassend zu festigen versuchte.

In the meantime, a temporary exhibition will present the most important finds and findings from Favianis in its place from the end of 2022 to 2025 in the municipal office of the municipality of Mautern an der Donau.
The present-day town of Mautern was built on the remains of the Roman fort "Favianis," the associated camp village, and its burial grounds. Since 2021, the military camp has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Danube Limes."
From the second half of the 1st century AD until the end of the 5th century AD, soldiers and their families, merchants, artisans, workers, enslaved people, and many others settled in and around Favianis. Even today, the massive late antique fortifications of the Roman camp in the town can still be visited.
"Roman Mautern" was located in the ancient Roman province of Noricum (or, in late antiquity, Noricum ripense) and thus on the northern border of the Roman Empire, today's Danube Limes. This flourishing border area is less understood as some "Cold War's Iron Curtain" but instead as a militarily and economically critical zone of interaction between the Roman Empire and the inhabitants of the lands to the north of it (the so-called Barbaricum). Along the Limes, Favianis was part of an extensive chain of different military stations (legionary camps for about 5000 soldiers, forts for about 500 to 1000 men, and watchtowers manned by a handful of soldiers) that were connected by roads.
Late antiquity and early Christianity are of particular importance in Mautern. One of the most important written sources of this period, the "Vita Sancti Severini" by Eugippius, describes the life and work of St. Severin, an early Christian missionary. He founded a monastery in Mautern and tried to alleviate the people's sufferings throughout northern Noricum during this crisis-ridden period characterized by poverty, war, hunger, and hardship.

In addition to their duties within the pastoral care and administration of ecclesiastical property, the bishops began to take care of the affairs of the cities and their agricultural background. They provided food for their community, negotiated with the enemies and ensured peace or made various agreements with the Germanic tribes to make the life of Romans easier. Among such men, although without a pastoral staff, what means without holding a church office, belonged St. Severinus who had been taking care of his herd in various ways in the province of Noricum and the adjacent Raetia for several decades until he passed away.

L’article se propose d’examiner la manière dont un même thème biblique, à savoir l’Exode, pouvait être traité dans les écrits de deux auteurs contemporains, qui vivaient dans le même cadre monastique et appartenaient au même espace géographique : Jean Cassien (Conférences) et Eucher de Lyon (Eloge du désert). A travers l’interprétation, fort différente, des événements de l’Exode, se dessinent deux visions de la vie monastique, et dans un sens plus large, de la vie chrétienne. ----------------------

The article seeks to examine the way the same biblical theme – the Exodus story – could be treated in the writings of two contemporary authors living in the same monastic milieu and in the same geographical area: John Cassian (The Conferences) and Eucherius of Lyon (In Praise of the Desert). Their different interpretation of the Exodus’ events testifies to two different visions of monastic, and in a broader sense of Christian, life.

Parmi les indicia qui soutiennent normalement l’auctoritas de qui enseigne, se trouve la cohérence entre la vie et le contenu de l’enseignement. Mais quelle valeur accorder aux sermons de ceux dont la vie dément les paroles ? Ils sont assis dans la chaire de Moïse (Mt 23, 2) : telle est la clé scripturaire par laquelle Augustin résout cette quaestio. Deux images illustrent son argumentation : celle du raisin qui pousse au milieu des épines et celle du héraut qui ne peut proclamer que les paroles du juge. La chaire dans laquelle est assis le prédicateur, bien plus que le signe de l’autorité du prédicateur lui-même, devient alors le signe du service qu’il rend au Christ qui, seul, détient l’autorité.

Staging authority in the Classical World, an introduction

This introduction is a review and a synthesis of all the talks which were held during the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon conference of the Junior Laboratory (École Normale Supérieure de Lyon project to encourage young researchers) ERAMA (Expression and Representation of Authority in the Classical World) which took place on Nobember 20-22th 2013. The annals of this conference, that this work introduces, were published in October 2015. The concept of authority, that the Junior Laboratory ERAMA endeavoured to define all along its researches project, is
enclosed in a large system of representations that is staged in several modes. Highly codified, those bways to represent authority go hand to hand with the very existence of authority, as authority becomes efficient by the visibility of its representations. The first part of ERAMA's conference tried to show how a form of authority considers itself, the different forms it assumes, in accordance to the
image it wishes to reflect. To that purpose, we studied the processes used to invest and legitimate authority (gestures, practices but also material attributes of authority). But, beyond the nomination and legitimation of authority, we tried to determine the way this authority lasted in time and space, beyond the hic et nunc. The choice of this problematic allowed us to use a large choice of sources, and scientific specialties (history, classical philology, epigraphy, archeology, numismatics etc.) anda large chronogical field ( fron Ivth dynasty Egypt to Byzantian beggining of the Middle Age.

After 325, Christianity was divided against itself as different groups within the church advocated Arian or Nicene definitions of orthodox faith. The response to Arianism exhibited by Severinus of Noricum (modern Austria) in Eugippius' Vita Severini, a work written in the early sixth century, is atypical in the Nicene orthodox literary tradition. Nicene orthodox authors in the fourth to sixth centuries of Christianity generally considered Arians to be a hostile "other."

Les documents épigraphiques relèvent d'une mise en scène de la parole politique : ils donnent à 'voir' avant de donner à 'lire' ; s'ajoute, à l'époque hellénistique, une part d'artificialité et d'affectation.
Cyrène n'échappe pas à cette théâtralisation de la parole politique lorsqu'elle passe sous le contrôle de son voisin égyptien ; nous sont ainsi conservés trois documents témoignant de l'influence lagide sur la vie de la cité : le diagramma du diadoque Ptolémée (SEG 9, 1), le testament de Ptolémée VIII Evergète II (SEG 9, 7) et des prostagmata de Ptolémée IX Sôtèr II (SEG IX, 5), qui s'étendant de la haute à la basse époque hellénistique. La diversité de ces trois documents permet une réflexion nuancée sur ces documents administratifs particuliers : de la nature des décisions transcrites, de la date et des objectifs de la publication, mais également de al anture des relations entre la cité et le roi,  dépend le mode de publication choisi par la cité.

Le concept d'autorité est l'objet d'un système de représentation et se met en scène selon des modes divers. Souvent codifiées, ces mises en scène représentent un élément indissociable de l'existence même de l'autorité, car celle-ci devient en partie effective par la visibilité de ses représentations et manifestations. La première partie du colloque des 20-22 novembre 2013 du laboratoire junior ERAMA a consisté à montrer la conception qu'une autorité a d'elle-même, et les différentes formes sous lesquelles elle se présente selon l'image qu'elle souhaite renvoyer. À cet effet, ont été étudiés les processus d'investiture et de légitimation de l'autorité, ainsi que, plus précisément, les gestes, pratiques, mais aussi les attributs matériels de l'autorité, en se penchant sur l'utilité, mais aussi la symbolique des objets employés lors de ces cérémonies. Enfin, on a considéré la manière dont l'autorité est mise en scène ou représentée par les autres entités. Et, en sus de l'investiture et de la mise en scène immédiate de l'autorité, on s'est interrogé sur la manière dont cette autorité s'inscrit dans le temps et dans l'espace au-delà du hic et nunc. Les moyens et les manifestations sont multiples : le nom, les choix architecturaux, etc. Mais aussi de manière plus dynamique, à travers des échanges et notamment la circulation des monnaies, vecteur privilégié de la propagation d'une autorité centralisée. Ce choix de problématique a permis de conjuguer un éventail élargi de sources et par là de spécialités, démarche indispensable pour le laboratoire ERAMA, par essence interdisciplinaire : archéologie, numismatique, sources purement littéraires, épigraphie, paléographie. Le champ chronologique a également été vaste, de la IVe dynastie, en Égypte ancienne (2543-2436 avant notre ère) aux débuts du Moyen-âge.

"Séverin diri­gea la com­mu­nauté romaine du Norique entre 455 et 482 après J.-C. dans le contexte de l’effon­dre­ment de l’auto­rité impé­riale en Occident. Il n’accepta cepen­dant jamais de titre ins­ti­tu­tion­nel et refusa notam­ment l’épiscopat, alors même qu’il agit en leader poli­ti­que des Romains du Norique. Il donne ainsi des ordres au tribun mili­taire Mamertinus.

Le refus radi­cal de fonder son auto­rité sur un socle ins­ti­tu­tion­nel le conduit à cher­cher d’autres fon­de­ments à celle-ci. De fait, elle réside dans la cons­truc­tion d’un per­son­nage de uir sanc­tus, de « saint homme », tel que le décrit Eugippe en 511 dans la Vita Seuerini. Ce per­son­nage est mis en scène de manière théâ­trale lors de cha­cune de ses inter­ven­tions publics selon deux métho­des. D’une part, les jeûnes et l’endu­rance, incar­née par l’absence de chaus­su­res dans un pays froid, lui per­met­tent de ren­voyer l’image d’un homme doué de capa­ci­tés hors du commun. D’autre part, chaque prise de parole publi­que est pré­cé­dée de priè­res osten­ta­toi­res et de larmes, ce que résume la for­mule fusis ilico lacri­mis in ora­tione pro­stra­tus est (« fon­dant en larmes, il se plon­gea aus­si­tôt en priè­res », Vita Seuerini, 14)."
