Baha’u’llah’s Bishārāt (Glad-Tidings):
A Proclamation to Scholars and Statesmen

This article is a historical and textual study of the one of the major writings of Baha’u’llah: the Lawḥ-i Bishārāt (‘Tablet of Glad-Tidings’), revealed circa 1891, and advances new theories as to its provenance and purpose. The ‘Tablet of Glad-Tidings’ is a selective compendium of Baha’u’llah’s laws and principles, sequentially presented in a series of fifteen ‘Glad-Tidings.’ As the Arabic term, bishārāt, suggests, these ‘Glad-Tidings’ were a public announcement of some of the essential teachings of the new Baha’i religion. The ‘Glad-Tidings’ is the most extensive of several ‘Tablets’ by Baha’u’llah that present key teachings in a numbered structure. The Glad-Tidings may, in part, be regarded as serially articulated ‘world reforms’ intermixed with religious reforms emanating from Baha’u’llah in his professed role as ‘World Reformer.’ The ‘Glad-Tidings’ also functioned analogously (albeit anachronistically) to a press release, serving not only as a public proclamation, but to rectify the inaccuracies and gross misrepresentations that had previously circulated in print. Intended for widespread translation and publication, the Glad-Tidings was sent to scholars — notably Russian orientalist, Baron Viktor Rosen (1849–1908) and Cambridge Orientalist, Edward Granville Browne (1862–1926) — and possibly pre-revolutionary Russian statesmen as well. As a ‘Proclamatory Aqdas,’ the Tablet of Glad-Tidings was part of a much broader proclamation by Baha’u’llah, who proclaimed his mission to the political and religious leaders of the world. This study will argue that the Baha’u’llah may have revealed the Tablet of Glad-Tidings for E.G. Browne — or rather through him, since Baha’u’llah evidently intended that Browne should translate and publish the Bishārāt in order to make the nature of the Baha'i teachings more widely known. This would then correct the distortions that had previously been published regarding Baha’u’llah's purpose and the nature of the religion that he founded, thereby, promoting a public awareness that a new world religion was on the horizon of modernity.

Should Russia become part of the West, or follow an Eastern path? This has been a centuries-old discussion among Russian intellectuals. For Westernizers in Russia, the " West " symbolized progress, freedom, democracy, civil society, normality, and a nation-state. Their opponents saw the West as representing moral decadence in the beginning and later capitalist exploitation. This paper attempts to lay out the foundations and the evolution of the 200-year-old discussion of Russia's place in the world. It briefly examines the period of Muscovite Russia, where the foundations of the authoritarian state tradition were laid and further strengthened. The paper then focuses on the period of Peter the Great's reign, in which educated Russians became increasingly acquainted with Western European culture and started having doubts about Russia's status in the face of perceived European superiority. Trying to summarize how the international and internal developments of the 1800s and 1900s have affected the debate about Russia's place between East and West, the paper then examines the current state of discussions in Russia under Putin's leadership and finally attempts to make predictions for the future.

This power point presentation is a short analysis of the famous statue of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg, Russia, and its construction.  The obstacles that were faced were indeed daunting but were overcome to create a work that has become the symbol of the city.

Although the first world, as seen through the lens of academia, seems to be prospering, and the third world has found its own place in the postcolonial intellectual order, the post-cold war world of semi-peripheries in East and Central Europe (ECE) has largely disappeared from the discourse of Comparative Literature. It sometimes appears as a convenient intellectual counterpoint or is included in postmodernist or postcolonial narratives; in both cases, however, it doesn’t convey regional specificity or allow local voices to speak. Both strategies – core and postcolonial – expropriate the semi-peripheral realm of second-world non-places.

After the October Revolution of 1917, even as the Russian civil war deepened and progressed, intellectuals of a wide variety of professional and political backgrounds began to try to make sense of the extraordinary events unfolding around them. The current article focuses on one of the most comprehensive early explanations for the revolution and the development of the Soviet regime, developed by the Petrograd sociologist Pitirim Sorokin shortly before he was expelled from Soviet Russia in fall 1922.
Sorokin theorized that the preceding cataclysmic years of war, revolution, civil war, and famine had served to debase Russia's human material physically, morally, psychically, and even genetically. His analysis of Russia's national degradation was framed within a comparative sociological analysis of the effects of calamities on human populations. Increasingly, however, unable and unwilling to restrain his anger and despair, he gave full vent to a more personal and emotional response to the catastrophe he re garded as having befallen his native land.

SUMMARY: This article attempts to delineate and plot the contours of the intercultural contributions of Gerasim Lebedev in a linguistic-cultural domain totally alien to him, in early-colonial Calcutta. It also seeks to contextualise the intense polysemy between 'microcosmic' personal and literary journeys and the 'cosmopolitan' acculturation that came with Lebedev's socio-cultural background and travels. Though, as will be seen in the essay, Lebedev's path-breaking maverick effort was largely a shot in the dark, his achievement is seen, in almost the entire theatrical fraternity in West Bengal and Bangladesh, in terms that can be described as larger than life. The essay will seek to understand the extent to which Lebedev's personal and professional choices reflected deep cross-cultural sympathies, thus making him an enthusiast with a difference.

Odessa, berceau de la Grèce moderne : Aux origines secrètes de la Philiki Eteria

Résumé

C’est à Odessa, ville neuve au bord de la mer Noire, que fut fondée en septembre 1814 la célèbre Société des Amis (Philiki Eteria), qui fut à l’origine du mouvement grec de libération qui mena à la Guerre d’indépendance et à la constitution de l’Etat grec moderne. Et pourtant, si l’on excepte quelques tentatives récentes de la part d’historiens grecs (notamment Papoulidis, Prousis) et russes (Arsh) de resituer le mouvement de la Philiki Eteria, sa genèse recèle encore bien des points d’ombre. Cette communication, basée sur de multiples documents inédits tirés des archives russes et ukrainiennes (notamment sur la correspondance politique de Ioannis Capodistrias et Alexandre Stourdza), jette un nouveau regard  sur les origines de la Philiki Heteria, ses conceptions initiales, ses financements, ainsi que ses relations contrastées avec les autorités russes.

Elle s’interroge en particulier sur le cadre d’Odessa comme berceau de cette société secrète. Pourquoi est-ce dans cette ville portuaire, si loin des frontières de la Grèce continentale, qu'a pu se développer cette société secrète, et pourquoi son action a-t-elle eu des retombées si importantes ? Qu’y faisaient ses membres et comment s’étaient-ils connus ? Par reflet, nous examinerons les traces que cette organisation a laissées dans la mémoire et le patrimoine culturel de la ville d’Odessa.

Plus généralement, l’action de la Philiki Eteria à Odessa s’inscrit dans la vaste question d’Orient, un enjeu de la géopolitique russe auquel le sort de la Grèce fut intimement lié. C’est l’occasion d’examiner dans quelle mesure ce mouvement fut une cause passionnelle chez les haut fonctionnaires et les diplomates russes, ou au contraire l’instrument d’un Etat décidé à imposer son hégémonie sur les Détroits et en Méditerranée orientale, au détriment de l’Empire ottoman et des autres puissances européennes.

Complete Story of 'The Abyss' from this anthology of ten short stories by Russian master of this genre - Leonid Andreyev. It is a dark and intense work of Expressionist Russian Litareature which at the same time falls in the bracket of Popular Fiction. For at the time, Leonid Andreyev really was the equivalent of a Stephen King or Dan Brown in terms of his popularity in Russia. He may not be a familiar name to everyone now but during his life he was as celebrated as Maxim Gorky and Leo Tolstoy. He was a bestselling novelist who at the same time expressed his extreme political views through his fiction. Andreyev's novels are partly forgotten today but due to some excellent translations, many of which have been pulled together in the work from which this extract has been taken, his short stories live on. This translation from the Russian has been revised and re-edited by Edouard d'Araille. I have included a photo-portrait of Andreyev after the story.

Though generally associated with the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, the idea of hegemony had a crucial history in revolutionary Russia where it was used to conceptualize the dynamics of political and cultural leadership. Drawing on extensive archival research, this study considers the cultural dimensions of hegemony, with particular focus on the role of language in political debates and in scholarship of the period. It is shown that considerations of the relations between the proletariat and peasantry, the cities to the countryside and the metropolitan centre to the colonies of the Russian Empire demanded an intense dialogue between practical politics and theoretical reflection, which led to critical perspectives now assumed to be the achievements of, for instance, sociolinguistics and post-colonial studies.

Книга посвящена творческому пути советских историков права 1920–1940-х гг., чьи судьбы оказались связанными с книгой Б. И. Сыромятникова «“Регулярное” государство Петра I и его идеология». Первый из них — автор упомянутого сочинения Борис Иванович Сыромятников (1874–1947). Он был одним из наиболее ярких отечественных историков-правоведов первой половины XX в. Начав карьеру ученого до 1917 г., он, хотя и был во время революции антибольшевистским публицистом, решил остаться в пореволюционной России, где пережил трансформацию из дореволюционного профессора в советского научного сотрудника. В начале 1940-х гг. Сыромятников сформулировал одну из наиболее парадоксальных концепций реформ Петра I в историографии XX в. Она начала активно обсуждаться еще в 1940–1941 гг., когда Сыромятников благодаря покровительству А. Я. Вышинского стал сотрудником Института права АН СССР. После того как в 1943 г. была опубликована первая часть его книги «“Регулярное” государство Петра I и его идеология», вокруг нее развернулась оживленная дискуссия, которая с 1946 г. стала органической частью «ждановщины». Второй — это Николай Алексеевич Воскресенский (1889–1948), настоящий ученый-подвижник. Третий — это Серафим Александрович Покровский (1905–1973), известный не только своими научными штудиями, но и сотрудничеством с советскими карательными органами в 1934–1953 гг. в качестве секретного сотрудника. На примере их творчества, вписанного в контекст развития советской исторической и историко-правовой науки, рассматривается, как специфика институциональной среды производства научного исторического знания в СССР делала возможным выдвижение новаторских научных идей и концепций. Книга написана с привлечением обширного круга как опубликованных источников, так и неизданных материалов из одиннадцати архивохранилищ Москвы и Санкт-Петербурга.

Речь К.Г. Лангера, профессора Императорского Московского университета в 1764–1774 гг., — первая оригинальная публикация по политической науке в Московском университете. Проблемное и предметное поле и междисциплинарные связи этой дисциплины автор определил на основе анализа европейских трудов по политике, праву, географии, истории и экономике. Речь отразила процесс становления политической науки в XVI–XVIII вв. в Европе, преимущественно в немецких университетах, и оказала влияние на ее преподавание Московском университете.
The Speech on the limits and the most important representatives of political science by K. Langer, a professor of the Imperial Moscow University in 1764–1774, is the first original publication on political science in the Moscow University. The scholar has defined political science based on an analysis of European works on politics, law, geography, history and economics. The Speech reflected the process of development of political science in 16th–18th centuries in Europe, mostly in German universities, and influenced on teaching political science in the Moscow University.

The Karamazov Correspondence: Letters of Vladimir S. Soloviev represents the first fully annotated and chronologically arranged collection of the Russian philosopher-poet's most important letters, the vast majority of which have never before been translated into English. Soloviev was widely known for his close association with Fyodor M. Dostoevsky in the final years of the novelist's life, and these letters reflect many of the qualities and contradictions that also personify the title characters of Dos-toevsky's last and greatest novel, The Brothers Karamazov. The selected letters cover all aspects of Soloviev's life, ranging from vital concerns about human rights and the political and religious turmoil of his day to matters related to family and friends, his love life, and early drafts of his works, including poetic endeavors.

How have modern cultures of dissent learnt to narrate the experience of political imprisonment? From 1851 to 1853, M. A. Bakunin was incarcerated in St. Petersburg’s Peter and Paul Fortress. Here, the “father of Russian anarchism” wrote what has become known as his Confession: an account of his personal and political development, penned in the most notorious prison of the Russian autocracy at the behest of the tsar. Previous scholarship has focused entirely on the content of this peculiar text. The present article is the first to mobilize extensive archival research—on its carceral conditions of production and intellectual conditions of possibility—in order to understand the form of Bakunin’s Confession. Doing so reveals the text as one of the first Russian Bildungsromane: the birth of a genre whereby the imprisoned self became legible through a new epistemology of self and history between Goethe and Hegel. Excavating the nature and afterlives of this novel political aesthetics provides original insights into the “politicization” of state incarceration in European history, the origins of modern Russian autobiographics, and the construction of the radical self.
