Romantic music aesthetics

Bu yazıda müziğin, Deleuze ve Guattari felsefesinin içkinlik/aşkınlık düzlemi, pürtüklü/kaygan uzam, organsız beden, yersiz-yurtsuzlaşma ve refrain gibi temel kavramlarıyla girmiş olduğu rezonans ilişkilerini serimleyerek, bir oluş bloku olarak sahip olduğu dönüştürücü gücü; 'diyagonal' kavramından hareketle klasik müzik, 'doğaçlama' kavramından hareketle caz müzik, 'sintisayzır'dan hareketle de elektronik müzik örnekleriyle açık kılmaya çalışacağım. Bu örnekler üzerinden müziğin sınırları zorlama ya da aşma serüveni, kısaca Deleuze'ün ifadesiyle müziğin organsız bedene ulaşma çabası çalışmanın temel derdini oluşturacaktır. Bu amaçla çalışmada, müzikte sınırları aşma deneyim örnekleri olarak Deleuze'ün sıklıkla referans verdiği Boulez'e, elektronik müziğin kuramsal ve deneysel temellerini oluşturan Varèse'ye ve de free jazz'ın öncüsü Coleman'a yer vereceğim. Bestecinin arayışları ile müzik ve yaşam arasında içkin bağlantılara yönelik yeni yaratım yollarının keşfinin; statik, insan merkezci molar özne anlayışından çıkıp, oluş sürecindeki kuvvet akışlarının kavşağındaki bir bedeni oluşturma olanağını düşünmeye çalışacağım.

PART TWO. Bart van Oort (Royal Conservatory The Hague) Forte and fortissimo markings A string of forte or sforzando markings, indicating a succession of climactic notes, lead toward a climax, which is indicated fortissimo. In Beethoven's Sonata Opus 10 no.1 in C minor, mm. 78-81, three counterbeat sforzandos result in a climactic ff on the downbeat of m. 84; the same happens before m. 90. How particular Beethoven is in indicating musical high points is shown in mm. 72-73, where two sf build up to a smaller climax in m. 74 marked forte, rather than another sf.

Brahms’ Intermezzo op. 117/2 is a striking case of “entwickelnde Variation” (developing variation) which Arnold Schoenberg identified as a high means of construction in music. This article blends Schoenberg’s “Fundamentals of Musical Composition” with a Schenker-like analysis to show how the developing variation of a four-note cell (a double dyad itself unfolding a broad sense of appoggiatura) is working behind a seemingly sonata-form throughout the realm of harmony, melody, counterpoint and rhythm. The author clarifies the concept of “entwickelnde Variation” actually ambiguous in Schoenberg’s writings to shed light on Brahms’ aesthetic stances during the late Romantic period. The Intermezzo also stems from poetic and literary sources. The four-note cell transformations and the structural exploitation of 6/3 motivic chords which conceals the tonic-root harmony until the last three beats have to do with the branch of musical narratology. An updated perspective is given on the relationship between Brahms’ once-supposed formalism and Eduard Hanslick’s very thought.

Der am 1. April 1942 in Paris uraufgeführte Film "La Symphonie Fantastique", ein Biopic über den französischen Komponisten Hector Berlioz, entstand als eine der ersten Produktionen der von den deutschen Besatzern geschaffenen Continental Films S.A. zwischen Oktober 1941 und März 1942 unter der Regie von Christian-Jaque. Die romantisierende Musikerbiographie des französischen Regisseurs erregte die Bewunderung wie den Unmut des die Continental steuernden deutschen Propagandaministers Goebbels, der sich in einer Tagebucheintragung "sehr ungehalten darüber, daß unsere eigenen Dienststellen in Paris den Franzosen beibringen, wie man im Film Nationalismen zur Darstellung bringen kann" zeigte. Der Artikel zeichnet die Entstehungsgeschichte des Films detailliert nach und analysiert sämtliche Filmsequenzen von "La Symphonie Fantastique" im Hinblick auf darin offen oder verdeckt theamtisierte Nationalismen und unterschwellige Oppsition gegen die von der deutschen Propaganda oktoyierte Befriedung der französischen Öffentlichkeit mit seichten Unterhaltungsfilmen. 

Premiered in Paris on April 1, 1942, "La Symphonie Fantastique," a biopic about French composer Hector Berlioz, was made as one of the first productions of Continental Films S.A., a production company created by the German occupiers to distract the French public from the repulsiveness of the Nazis with shallow films. The French director's Christian-Jaque romanticizing biography of the musician aroused the admiration and displeasure of Goebbels, the German propaganda minister in charge of Continental, who in a diary entry expressed himself as "very displeased that our own services in Paris are teaching the French how to portray nationalisms in film". The present article traces the genesis of the film in detail and analyzes all film sequences of "La Symphonie Fantastique" with regard to nationalisms openly or covertly thematized in them and subliminal opposition to the pacification of the French public with shallow entertainment films octroyed by German propaganda. 

Le film "La Symphonie Fantastique", un biopic sur le compositeur français Hector Berlioz tourné entre octobre 1941 et mars 1942 sous la direction de Christian-Jaque, était une des premières productions de la Continental Films S.A., créée par les occupants allemands dans le but de pacifier l'opinion publique française avec des films à l'eau de rose qui ne se heurtaient pas trop à l'idéologie nazie. Le film du réalisateur français suscita l'admiration et le mécontentement du ministre allemand de la propagande Goebbels, qui pilotait la Continental et qui, dans son journal intime, se déclara "très contrarié par le fait que nos propres services à Paris apprennent aux Français comment représenter les nationalismes au cinéma". Le présent article retrace en détail l'histoire de la création du film et analyse toutes les séquences de "La Symphonie fantastique" sous l'angle des nationalismes qui y sont thématisés, ouvertement ou non, et de l'opposition sous-jacente à la pacification du public français par la propagande allemande.

این یادداشت برگردان یک گفتار ویدیویی است که در تاریخ دوم اردی بهشت ماه هزار و سیصد و نود و هشت در فستیوال موسیقی شیراز با محوریت موسیقی فرانتس شوبرت به نمایش درآمد. مطلب پیشِ رو نسخه ی بازنویسی شده ی گفتار ویدیویی اصلی است که با حذف بخش های حاشیه ای و افزودن پانویس های لازم به تناسب و نیاز تکمیل شده است. این گفتار به بازخوانی خوانش تئودور آدورنو از موسیقی فرانتس شوبرت می پردازد. اشاره ی  اصلی این جستار به طور خاص به مقاله ای است به نام "شوبرت" که نخستین بار در سال 1928 و در ژورنال موسیقی Die Musik به چاپ رسید و در آن نگاه آدورنو به موسیقی شوبرت آشکار می شود

The second half of the nineteenth century is a neglected period in the history of Polish music, in the aspects of both research and performance. Works by many composers from this period have unfortunately been forgotten. One such composer is undoubtedly Aleksander Zarzycki (1834-1895), also a teacher and piano virtuoso, the author of more than 40 opuses, including many solo songs with piano accompaniment, which have frequently been compared to the songs of Stanisław Moniuszko. Similarly as Poland's most famous song composer, Zarzycki created two songbooks that belong to the trend of egalitarian songs. He was also renowned for his short piano pieces, written in the salon style with virtuoso elements. One of his most famous works is the Mazurka in G major, popularised by the Spanish virtuoso violinist Pablo Sarasate. Also of note is his Piano Concerto in A-flat major Op. 17, drawing on Fryderyk Chopin's Piano Concerto in A minor and Józef Wieniawski's Concerto in G minor. Zarzycki's works are

Problem with Definition Discussing the question of European heritage – at both national and pan‐national levels – we often concentrate on the material that remains, like bricks, trees, urban resources, design and art, etc. Very often, we forget about the results of spiritual or emotional results of human think‐ ing, about the intangible heritage, including music, instead paying at‐ tention mostly to visible artefacts. According to romantic aesthetics like Wilhelm Schlegel and others, music is the highest of the fine arts just because it does not need any kind of media to be perceived, and does not need any material form to transcribe an artist’s idea into any lis‐ tener’s mind. Die Entwicklung der Blaskapelle im Italien des 19. Jahrhunderts begleitet und unterstützt die politische und kulturelle Entwicklung eines Landes, das durch die langwierige Gründung eines einheitlichen Staates gekennzeichnet ist und durch die Entstehung einer neuen führenden Schicht, die ihrerseits Ausdruck einer seit der Aufklärung bestehenden bürgerlich-aristokratischen Oligarchie war. Diese enge Verknüpfung zwischen der Entwicklung der Blaskapellen und dem historisch-politischen Kontext hat sogar eine europäische Dimension. Es sei nur daran erinnert, daß die Französische Revolution der Ausgangspunkt für die Entstehung der Blaskapelle im 19. Jahrhundert war. Die freiheitlichen Ideale der Revolution setzten die zunehmende Beteiligung bisher ausgeschlossener Schichten am öffentlichen Leben in Gang, womit man durch Bildung und Erziehung auf die Zivilisierung des Bürgers abzielte, was zugleich auch einer der Gründe für die Verbreitung des Phänomens der Blaskapelle auf europäischer Ebene ist.

Gilles Deleuze ve Felix Guattari, Batılı düşünme sisteminin dayanmış olduğu hiyerarşileri ve ikili karşıtlıkları (üst-alt, güçlü-zayıf, güzel-çirkin gibi) aşmak ve özgür düşünme faaliyetini otoritenin tahakkümünden kurtarmak için köksap kavramını bir metafor olarak kullanırlar. Köksap kavramı botanik biliminden gelmektedir ve yer altında yatay biçimde dallanıp budaklanan patates, zencefil, kuşkonmaz gibi bitkilerin ortak özelliklerini ifade eder. Köksapsal oluşumlar, herhangi bir başlangıç noktası ve sonu olmayan ağımsı bir modele benzer. Köksapsal düşünme formunun eylem modeli, farklı bağlantılara açık heterojen bir yapı sergilemesi, benzeri dallar içinde çokluklara olanak tanıması, herhangi bir kopma durumunda bağlantıyı farklı kanallar üzerinden gerçekleştirebilme olanağına sahip olması, ilişkileri farklı alanlar üzerinden haritalandırarak mimari bir yapıya kavuşturması ve tesadüflere açık özelliğiyle sosyal yapıdaki hiyerarşik düşünme ve eylem biçimlerinin tahakkümünü kırmaktadır. Köksapsal düşünme formunun çoklu merkezlerden beslenmesi tek yönlü biçimde işleyen otoriter düşünme biçimlerinin dağılmasını sağlar. Bu bağlamda köksapsal düşünme formunun, bireylerin farklılıklara ve yeniliklere açık biçimde davranmalarını sağlayarak bütün bir toplumsal yapıyı ideolojilerden, kimliklerden ve hiyerarşilerden arındırmada olumlu potansiyellere sahip olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Deleuze ve Guattari’ye göre bu anlamda bir ilk köken ya da belirli bir soya, merkeze dayanan bir bakış açısı yoktur. Köksap, her zaman için ortalarda başlar ve yanlara doğru savrulup bütün bir küreyi kuşatır. Köksapsal düşünce bu bağlamda karnavalesk bir yapı sergiler. Deleuze ve Guattari, köksap kavramıyla belirli bir kültür, dil ve merkez anlayışına bağlı kalmaksızın karnavalesk bir toplum görüntüsü çizmektedirler. Köksapsal düşüncelerin her türlü ilişki ve kültür formunu kucaklamakla sosyo-politik sistemdeki tıkanıklıkları ve katılıkları  gideren ve böylece iktidar ilişkilerinden arınık özgür bir dünyayı inşa etme potansiyeline sahip olduğunu söyleyebiliriz.

Özet Her müzik kültürünün kendisine özgü bir müzik teorisine sahip olması ve o teorinin de kendi içinde sistematize edilerek açıklanması müzik teorisi alanında genel bir yaklaşım olmuştur. Bunun sonucunda müzik teorileri genel olarak batı (tonal müzik teorisi) ve batı-dışı müzik teorileri (modal/makamsal müzik teorileri) olarak sınıflanmıştır. Bu ayrım temelde etnomüzikoloji bağlamında, müziğin kültür içinde analiz edilmesi ve karşılaştırılması geleneğinin bir sonucudur. Batının tonal müzik teorisi armonik yapıların yatay ve dikey düzlemde inşası ve bağlanma ilkelerini içermektedir. Bu ilkeler batı tonal müziğinin temelde gerilim-çözülüm ilişkisi içinde güçlü bir hiyerarşik yapıyla açıklanmasını sağlamıştır. Bu bağlamda dinleyenin psikolojik düzeydeki beklentileri (sırada ne var?) melodik ve armonik beklentiler olarak kuramsallaştırılmıştır (Krumhansl, 2002; Meyer, 1956). Kalıplaşmış akor bağlantıları (kadanslar) beklenen akorları içererek (Schmuckler, 1989) melodik yapıların daha kolay algılanması ve hatırlanmasını sağlayan bir işlev görmektedirler (Deutsch, 1980). Batı tonal müziğinde geleneksel olarak V-I (otantik kadans) ve IV-I (plagal kadans) akorlarının bağlanması ile elde edilen tamamlanma/bitme hissi closure (kapanma) olarak kavramsallaştırılmış ve analiz edilmiştir (Rosner ve Narmour, 1992). Aslında batı-dışı müziklerde de bu tamamlanma/bitme pratiğini yani bir karar sesine varıldığını görürüz. Türk Müziği makam teorisinde kullanılan karar, yeden, güçlü perdesi gibi kavramlar da aslında batı tonal müziğindeki hiyerarşik yapılarla belli düzeyde benzerliğe sahiptir. Araştırmada bu benzerlik entropi kavramı temelinde detaylandırılmış ve müzik teorileri arasındaki ayrışmaya karşıt bir okuma olanağı sunan bir meta-teori teklifi içinde tartışılmıştır. Bu meta-teori tüm müzik teorilerinde/pratiklerinde görülen ortak bir kavram olarak gerilim-çözülüm/kapanma yani merkez bir seste sona erme pratiğinin altında entropi kavramı olduğu iddiasına dayandırılmıştır. Termodinamiğin ikinci yasası olarak entropi; tabiatta düzensizliğin artma eğiliminde olması, evrendeki her şeyin kendini minimum enerji ve maksimum düzensizliğe çekme eğilimini tanımlayan bir kavramdır. Bir odadaki eşyaların sürekli dağılmaya eğilimli olması, maksimum düzensizliğe yönelmesi ve odadaki eşyaların farklı kombinasyonlar dâhilinde dağılması entropiye bir örnektir. Odayı tonal/makamsal/modal bir sistem, sesleri de eşyalar olarak kabul edersek; seslerin bir kompozisyon içinde konumlanma kombinasyonlarına yönelik sınır ve kuralların aslında müzik teorilerinin tanım ve işlevi olduğunu düşünebiliriz. Bu bağlamda şu sorular geliştirilebilir: Müzik teorik sistemlerin entropik açıdan rolü nedir? Yaratıcılık bu sistemin neresindedir? Estetik denilen fenomen entropik sürecin bir anlık reytingi yüksek fotoğrafı mıdır? Müzik teorileri arasındaki farklılık entropi bağlamında nasıl muğlâk bir hale gelebilmektedir? Entropi müzikte en yüksek geçerlikte evrensel bir olgu olarak tanımlanabilir mi? Yoksa müzik, seslerin sınırsız kombinasyonlarını içeren maksimum düzeydeki entropi ile bunu sınırlamaya çalışan estetik/teorik direnç arasındaki çatışma alanı mıdır? Müzik tarihi de bu mücadelenin tarihi midir? Bu meta-teorik yaklaşım müzik teorileri arasındaki kültürel ve psikolojik alımlama farklılıklarını kabul etmekle birlikte, entropi gibi kapsayıcı bir fizik yasasının müzik teorilerini değerlendirmede üstten bir bakış açısı sunabileceğine yöneliktir.

In The Theory of Inspiration Timothy Clark argues that the Romantic poets modelled their poetics on an ideal of oral communication in order to induce a fantasy of reciprocal response; my paper will argue that in Julian and Maddalo Shelley disdains such a grudgingly mediated conception of poetic ‘voice’ in favour of non-linguistic strategies of communication that create immanent affective armatures for the exploration of Subjectivity. The poem culminates in a tantalizing final couplet where the speaker Julian deliberately withholds information regarding the Maniac’s life, ‘she told me how | All happened – but the cold world shall not know.’ My reading will argue that the hermeneutic labour created by this inconclusive ending intimates that both Julian and the Maniac conceal information because they are ashamed of having failed to live up to their own definitions of ‘the human,’ and that they register this feeling by refusing to communicate directly. Shelley’s presentation of their shame challenges the reader to respond sympathetically to the de-humanization which both characters experience and to fill the textual absences with a new kind of human voice or Subject-position. The coherence of Julian’s narratorial voice is eroded by an overarching phenomenology of affect which challenges the structure of deferred communication implicit in Clark’s oral model; this phenomenology creates a dimension of inter-subjectivity between character, text and reader where continual creative re-adjustments of their relations can be made.

Il mito letterario di don Giovanni, sorto nella commedia, attorno al 1800 viene riformulato in direzione del tragico. La trasformazione inizia con la versione operistica di Mozart-Da Ponte e trova compimento nel racconto di Hoffmann, che proietta il nuovo tono tragico del finale mozartiano su tutto il mito. L’articolo intende porre in rilievo la presenza nel Don Juan di numerosi richiami intertestuali al Faust di Goethe, finora non pienamente rilevati dalla critica, attraverso i quali è possibile leggere tale riscrittura tragica come una dichiarata sintesi dei due miti, in cui don Giovanni assume il ruolo di Faust-Mefistofele e donna Anna quello di Gretchen. La riscrittura del mito culmina nel finale rispecchiamento del narratore in Anna-Gretchen. Ma il valore del tragico è relativizzato in Hoffmann dall’ironica autocoscienza dell’artista romantico: confinato nel mondo fantastico dell’arte, risulta privo di senso nella prosaica realtà della vita borghese.

A recurring theme in the reception of Schumann’s Eichendorff Liederkreis is the question mark over its sense of narrative continuity and the presence (or otherwise) of a central protagonist. Up until now, however, scarcely any attempt has been made to view these features in the context of Eichendorff’s wider literary production. This article proposes applying an Eichendorffian aesthetic to Schumann’s op. 39, viewing its phantasmagoric interconnections, absence of clear narrative order, sense of temporal dislocation and persistent theme of the loss of self as profoundly reflecting the concerns of Eichendorff’s prose fiction. Neither the view that Schumann’s cycle does possess a unified narrative and central protagonist, nor the converse, that it should be seen as a disparate group of songs, is adequate. Instead, it is the tension between the two views that emerges as crucial in coming to an aesthetic understanding of the cycle. Schumann’s procedure, in juxtaposing a number of poems drawn from disparate works, presents an extreme case whereby narrative and subjective identity are put to the test, and the listener is invited to fill the vacant space left by the withdrawal of a unifying subject with his or her own sense of subjectivity.

Felix Mendelssohn and Paul Hindemith, composing about one hundred years apart, integrated visual elements, including drawings and illustrated notations, into musical manuscripts they designed as gifts for women they admired. The two documents, illustrating Mendelssohn’s Schilflied (1842) and Hindemith’s Ludus Tonalis (1942), are strong declarations of compositional and artistic ideology. This article examines the scores as reflecting, respectively, aspects of nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century conceptions of musical composition and form, and their relation to visual media.

Hierbei wird sich nachvollziehen lassen, dass der gefeierte Orchesterleiter als Operndirigent vergleichsweise wenig erfolgreich war. Im Jahre 1851 wird Ferdinand Hiller für drei Jahre vom Direktor und Unternehmer Benjamin Lumley als Dirigent und künstlerischer Leiter des Théâtre-Italien in Paris und des Her Majesty’s Theatre in London angestellt. Seine Tätigkeit wird sich jedoch auf die Leitung des einzigen Pariser Theaters während der Spielzeit 1851-1852 beschränken. Nach einer Vorstellung der Laufbahn und der Einstellung des deutschen Dirigenten vor dem Antritt seines Amtes, wenden wir uns zunächst Lumleys zweifacher Leitung, Hillers Ernennung und seinen Befugnissen zu. Dann werden das Ensemble des Théâtre-Italien, der Spielplan der Spielzeit 1851-1852 und die erste Aufführung von Beethovens Fidelio, die einzige Neuheit der Spielzeit, betrachtet. Schlieβlich werden die Ursachen und die Folgen von Lumleys Bankrott analysiert. Diese Untersuchung stützt sich hauptsächlich auf die gründliche Durchsicht der Sammlungen AJ/13 und F/21 der Archives Nationales in Paris, was das Théâtre-Italien während dieser Spielzeit betrifft,  auf Hillers Vierzehn Tage in Paris genannten Bericht von 1851, der erst 1868 veröffentlicht wurde,  auf den ersten Band aus Hillers Briefwechsel, der 1958 von Reinhold Sietz herausgegeben wurde,  auf die 1864 veröffentlichten Lumleys Memoiren  und auf das Durchsehen folgender Zeitschriften: La Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris, Le Ménestrel, Le Journal des Débats und die Neue Zeitschrift für Musik.

Deleuze ve Guattari Bin Yayla'da eserlerini gündeme getirdikleri kompozitörlerin en erken örneği olarak karşımıza Johann Sebastian Bach çıkmakta ve aslında şaşırılmayacak biçimde kendi iç tutarlılığından kesin bir biçimde bahsedebileceğimiz bir örnek biçiminde kitabın en sonunda, 15. bölümde "Sonuç: Somut Kurallar ve Soyut Makineler"de yer almakta. Deleuze ve Guattari burada Bach'ın müziğini bir tekillik, yaratıcılık, süreklilik ve tutarlılık örneği olarak incelemekte ve eserlerini soyut makineler olarak tanımlamakta. Ludwig Von Beethoven ve Anton Webern ise Bach'ın yanı sıra diğer soyut makinelere sahip kompozitörler olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu kompozitörlerin metinde parantez içinde verilen örneklerde bir araya Deleuze ve Guattari tarafından tesadüfi olarak getirilmediği ve formun çeşitli öğelerinin onların sanatları içinde birbirleriyle ayrılamaz hale geldiği tekillikler olarak ele alındığını görmekteyiz. Deleuze ve Guattari'nin metnine dışarıdan baktığımızda ancak son derece sofistike bir gözün kendi dönemlerinin en önemli etkilenimlerini yaratmış olan kompozitörler olarak ikinci bir alternatife yer vermeden düşüneceği bu kompozitörler (Geç Barok, Geç Klasik ve Erken Modern Dönemlerde), Deleuze ve Guattari'nin kavramsallaştırması ile soyut makinelere sahipler. Deleuze ve Guattari'ye göre sosyal ya da diğer bütün yönelimler ile tanımlanıp kabul edilen doğabilime ilişkin katmanların ya da biraraya gelişlerin tersine soyut makineler, form ve kendine özgü maddeler hakkındaki içkin bilginin farkındalığına sahip olmaya ihtiyacı olmayacak kadar tutarlıdır ve kendi kendini sürdürmeye haizdir. Bu nitelik, onları soyut yapan şeydir ancak aynı nitelik bunun yanı sıra ciddi anlamda 'makine' kavramını da tanımlar. Her tür mekaniği aşacak biçimde… Aslında paradoksal bir biçimde sıradan bir kullanım içinde bu makineler soyut kavramının tam karşısında konumlanırlar. Soyut makineler formlaşmamış maddelerden ve formu olmayan işlevlerden ayrılmaz bir bileşik olarak meydana gelirler. Her soyut makine; maddeler-fonksiyonların (phylum ve diagram) kapsanmış ayrılmaz yığınları halindedir. Bu nitelik, teknolojik düzlem üzerinde öyle bir örnektir ki bu düzlem üzerinde basitçe formlaşmış maddelerin tözlerinden (alüminyum, plastik, elektrik kablosu vs.) ya da örgütleyici formlardan (program prototipleri, yazılım arayüzleri vs.) oluşmaz. Fakat sadece yoğunluğunun derecesi ile sergilenebilen şekilsiz maddelerin bileşiğinden (direnç, iletkenlik, ısınma, gerilme, hız ya da gecikme, başlangıç, dönüşme…) 4 ya da birbirlerine olan farklılıkların aynılaşması ile kendini gösteren 'diagrammatic'ler 1 Bu yazı, Bin Yayla'da müzikal eserler ile ilişkilendirilebilecek kapsamlı çalışmalar için metin üzerinde çalışmaya devam ettiğim bir sırada ancak metinde üzerine spesifik olarak çalıştığım kavramlara değinmeden yazıldı. Tersi, hem bu formata sığdıramayacağım bir niceliği gerekserdi hem de zamanından önce, bitmemiş bir çalışmayı paylaşmanın özensizliğine sebep olurdu. Bu yüzden yazı, bu konuda halen yazılmakta olan ve bitmemiş metinleri kullanmadığım; Deleuze ve Guattari'nin kitapta konu ettiği müzik örnekleri üzerinden ilerlemeye çalıştığım ve müzik için daha genel bir referans derlemesi içeren, metne değin bir tür haritalama çabasına bir giriş olması umuduyla kaleme alındı. 2 Yazı içinde müzikal örnekler üzerinden ilerlediğim için Deleuze ve Guattari'nin Bin Yayla'da konu ettiği kavramsallaştırmalarda kitaptaki sırayı izlemedim. Hatta bir sonuca bağlansa da kısmen kitabın sonundan başına yolculuk ettim. Ne var ki kitap bu biçimde bir karışık okumayı mümkün kılmakta: "Soyut Makineler", "Linguistiğin Postülaları", "Oluş" ve "Ritournelle". 3 M.A., M.Ed. 4 Bu kavramların hemen hepsi fiziğin alanından alınmışsa da aslında kimi elektriğin kimi müziği oluşturan ögeler olan sese de ilişkin parametreleri doğrudan barındırmakta.

Telemanns Geburtshaus, die Stadt Magdeburg, im frühen 18. Jahrhundert. Etwa 50 Jahre vor der Geburt von Telemann wurde die Stadt geplündert und musste wieder aufgebaut werden. Telemann wurde geboren in Magdeburg, der Hauptstadt des Herzogtums Magdeburg, Brandenburg-Preußen, in eine obere-Mittelklasse-Familie. Seine Eltern waren Heinrich Telemann, Diakon in der Kirche des Heiligen Geistes (Heilige-Geist-Kirche) in Magdeburg, und Maria Haltmeier, Tochter eines Geistlichen aus Regensburg. Viele der Familienmitglieder arbeitete für die Kirche und nur ein paar entfernte Verwandte waren Musiker. Der Komponist selbst behauptete, dass er erbte das Talent für Musik von seiner Mutter, dessen Neffe Joachim Friedrich war Kantor in Verden (Telemann würde später eine Abhandlung von Joachim Friedrichs Sohn, der Organist wurde veröffentlicht). Auf der Seite seines Vaters, wird nur eine einzige relativ bekannt, ein Berufsmusiker sind: Heinrich Thering, Telemanns Urgroßvater, diente als Kantor in Halberstadt in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Telemanns Bruder Heinrich Matthias (1672-1746) wurde schließlich ein Geistlicher.

Numerous Polish artists of the 19/20 cc break could not find their place in the country not because of political or economic reasons, but because of the reluctance of critics to embrace modern tendencies. Paderewski was one of them. His whole life was a struggle between “national” and “individual”. Maybe it is why Paderewski – composer transformed himself into Paderewski the philanthropist, Paderewski the politician and Paderewski the statesman. Playing those roles he worked hard to realize the boy’s dream “to help his country”.

From the Romantic era onwards music has been seen as the most quintessentially temporal art, possessing a unique capacity to invoke the human experience of time.  Through its play of themes and recurrence of events music has the ability to stylise in multiple ways our temporal relation to the world, with far-reaching implications for modern conceptions of memory, subjectivity, personal and collective identity, and history.  Time, as philosophers, scientists and writers have found throughout history, is notoriously hard to define.  Yet music, seemingly bound up so intimately with the nature of time, might well be understood as disclosing aspects of human temporality unavailable to other modes of inquiry, and accordingly was frequently granted a privileged position in nineteenth-century thought.  For if this age understood time, it was through a melody.
  This book examines the multiple ways in which music may provide insight into the problematics of human time.  Whether in the purported timelessness of Beethoven’s late works or the nostalgic impulses of Schubert’s music, in the use of music by philosophers as a means to explicate the aporias of temporal existence or as medium suggestive of the varying possible structures of time, as a reflection of a particular culture’s sense of historical progress or the expression of the intangible spirit behind the course of human history, each of the book’s chapters explores a specific theme in the philosophy of time as expressed through music.  They chart the development across the course of the nineteenth century of music’s capacity to convey the manifold nuances of time, revealing how music would finally become seen as the ideal instantiation of time and human existence itself.  At once historical, analytical, critical, and ultimately hermeneutic, it provides both fresh insight into many familiar nineteenth-century pieces and a rich theoretical basis for future research.

When the Bach-Gesellschaft was founded in 1850, could its organizers have known that their ‘objective’ actions and intents would not be taken kindly by much of subjectively-minded musical Europe? Within the decade, a polemical public debate about the Bearbeitungsfrage (issue of adaptation) arose around the very nature and goals of the emerging discipline of musicology. Early editors such as Phillip Spitta and Friedrich Chrysander often found critical support for their work in progressive figures such as Joachim, Brahms, and Eduard Hanslick. The opposition was led by the composer Robert Franz, and supported by (among others) Franz Liszt. They derided the ‘most recent alliance’ of Spitta and Chrysander, characterizing them as mere ‘archeologists’, musical incompetents who were vandalizing great art and producing useless, unperformable editions. In the period 1860 to 1890, Franz’s ‘artistic’ school (which included his acolytes, Julius Schaeffer, Albert Hahn, and Otto Dresel) published rival editions of Baroque works with full scores, vocal scores, and instrumental parts, some of which were still in print well into the 20th century. By the end of the 19th century, the debate had died down, along with its principal authors. But the issues raised remained, as the tensions surrounding performances in the past fifty years by Glenn Gould and Angela Hewitt may remind us.

For Friedrich Hölderlin, the function of the poetic Artist is prophetic: to call attention to the absence of the fire of civilization and to prepare humanity to usher in a new beginning with its return. Poetry, for Hölderlin, is a divine "re-calling" that allows self-reflection as one prepares to welcome this return of the light of civilization. The function of the poet is to allow this selfreflection to reveal itself. Martin Heidegger refers to this revelation as a way for one to step outside of oneself and recognize the self in the foreign (Other) in order to clearly understand oneself. In his lectures on Hölderlin's Hymn "The Ister," he investigates the function of poetry to help one understand oneself within the Other and the ability to be at home in oneself by being at home in one"s Otherness. 1 The function of "The Ister," as Heidegger notes, and, one can assume, for Hölderlin, is to allow the Artist to see his function as a prophet who has been called to usher in the new fire of civilization through this self-revelation. 2 It is this philosophical view of the function of artist in relation to his art that resonated in early nineteenth-century Romantic composers, like Robert Schumann, and shaped not only the way they viewed musical composition, but the philosophical and poetic functions of music.

Robert Schumann nació el 8 de junio de 1810 en Zwickau (Sajonia, Alemania), siendo uno de los compositores románticos más destacados de su generación -de la que forman parte Mendelssohn (1809Mendelssohn ( --1847, Chopin (1810--1849) y Liszt (1811--1886). A la temprana edad de siete años se inició en la composición musical, pero pronto tendería a cultivar más la literatura que la música -seguramente influido por su padre, August Schumann, librero y editor--. Ya en 1850 el Universal Journal of Music destaca la habilidad desde niño del compositor para reflejar sentimientos en sus melodías; faceta también recogida por el musicólogo contemporáneo W.J. von Wasielewski (1822--1896). Entre sus preferencias literarias juveniles podemos encontrar a Goethe, Schiller, Byron, y muy especialmente a Jean Paul Friedrich Richter -éste influyó tanto en él que le llevó a escribir una novela en 1826 bajo el título Juniusabende--. La muerte de su padre en 1826, cuando Schumann tenía dieciséis años, hizo que no hubiera ya nadie que le animase a emprender una carrera musical, por lo que se vio avocado a estudiar Derecho en Leipzig y Heidelberg.

This paper proposes a new interpretation of the famous fourth century A.D. mosaic of the “Seven Sages” and the “Anger of Achilles”. Discovered in Merida in 1982, this mosaic was previously analyzed and interpreted by J.M. Aharez Martinez and M.-H. Quet. The occurrence of these two iconographic themes in one mosaic tends the author to compare the description of the “Anger of Achilles” in the first book of the Iliad with the maxims of the Seven Sages of Greece. The study of both written and iconographic sources shows that he image of the “Anger of Achilles” evokes allusively the moral precepts of the Seven Sages. The mosaic constitutes therefore an example of the practical use of “artificiosa memoria “.
