While reading John Dewey's "Art as Experience" and Robert Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values," a graduate student observed close affinities between what Dewey referred to as "experience" and Pirsig referred to as "quality." Both texts are concerned with cultivating the appreciation of aesthetic things. When the student found himself conspicuous in the Chicago Art Institute because of the amount of time he spent at particular exhibits, he became distressed with the manner in which most patrons moved '''.rough the museum with only superficial observations. It is his contention that to a great extent the institutions of formalized education fail to provide either the types of environments and interactions necessary for aesthetic experiences to develop, or to tech students how to cultivate such experiences both in and out of sch,.ol. Their privileging of mimetic modes of instruction and the acquisition of disembodied "knowledge," as evidenced by the widespread use of standardized testing, is in many ways fundamentally at odds with genuinely attentive approaches to the world (Jackson, 1986; Oakes, 1985). An excerpt from Pirsig's book in which the narrator enjoins one of his students to do "some original and direct seeing" by concentrating on a single brick in an opera house illustrates the potential of this type of education. El siguiente escrito aborda el problema del surgimiento de la individualidad en la poesía arcaica, a partir de dos fragmentos del poeta Arquíloco de Paros (frags. 13S y 128S). Se propone el análisis de dichos fragmentos a partir de la problematización de la subjetividad llevada a cabo por Michel Foucault en su estudio sobre la sexualidad y la mo- ral en la cultura grecolatina. Un primer apartado busca reconstruir el estudio genealógico que lleva al autor francés a interesarse por la cultura de la Grecia clásica y la Roma impe- rial, y a definir la subjetividad como una particular relación del individuo consigo mismo a partir de un conjunto de prácticas entendidas como ‘prácticas de sí’. El segundo apartado desarrolla un análisis filológico de los fragmentos intentando relevar algunas dimensiones de la performance poética que permitirían reconstruir ciertos ‘modos de subjetivación’ en la poesía de Arquíloco.

Se retoma la crítica a la traducción de los Fragmentos Póstumos de la Ed. Técnos, como pretexto para analizar el pasaje que realiza Nietzsche en los meses sucesivos a la publicación de "Die Gegurt", donde podemos observar una revisión crítica del concepto "Ursprung", tan relevante en su primer libro.

This thesis offers a critical discussion of Robert M. Pirsig's 'metaphysics of Quality', based upon his two written works, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974) and Lila (1991). Discussion is pursued through a narrative style loosely modelled on Pirsig's literary contemplation of composition and Quality, but also with an emphasis on the form of a Platonic dialogue, albeit from a Postmodern perspective. The issues raised in the thesis focus upon an examination of Pirsig's conception of Quality in the light of philosophical histories and Deconstruction and include a detailed discussion of whether all forms of writing are, by definition, both creative and rhetorical. This paper offers an exploration and interpretation of Robert M. Pirsig’s key term ‘Quality’; the notion of a pre-intellectual moment that he suggests exists between the thing in itself and rationalisation. I have followed two traces of ‘Quality’ in search of a Pirsigian aesthetic. Firstly, a metaphysical trace, which investigates the pre-intellectual moment in relation to the writings of Plato, Schopenhauer, Schelling, Heidegger and Derrida. Secondly, I have pursued a mystical trace, which attempts to get back behind Maya (the illusion of reality) to the universal poetic energy or ‘Quality’ by dissolving the eight veils that obscure the work of art. Finally, I have put forward a concept of the Fake as a guard against the complete rejection of rationality that leads only to ignorance and credulousness. I suggest that through the Fake, it is possible to acknowledge rationally that which is beyond our rational capability.

This article discusses the basic types of concepts of quality occurring in Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values. These terms refer to the different conceptual domains, creating diversified types of rhetoric. All kinds of rhetoric refer to the discovery and awakening of individuality. The quality of education at university or on a motorbike must extend to all possible levels of the Great Chain of Being, it can not only be addressed with abstractedness. Conceptual diversification means diversifying rhetoric and style, which possibly corresponds to different levels of quality for Pirsig. In this sense, his proposals of a metaphysics of quality is part of a current dispute about the crisis within the humanities and the need to give it meaning, practicality and socially responsible utility. A metaphysics of quality uses the rhetoric of conceptual schemata which include: road, inclusion and container.

Are there concepts that are eternally true?  Concepts that exist outside of and independent of a sentient being who crafted them?  Mathematics is thought of by some people as having 'existence' independent of human creation, and thus it is something that was discovered and not invented.  Does this actually make sense?  Could this be a true statement of reality?

Er zijn drie waarheidszoekers met een geschreven nalatenschap aan boeken die ik niet kan wegdenken uit mijn leven zonder dat ik er onherstelbare ethische hersenschade aan overhoud: Jezus, Multatuli en Robert M. Pirsig. Drie grote filosofen die die naam niet verdienen volgens hun tijd- en vakgenoten, drie individualisten die zich alle drie met dezelfde universele materie bezighielden. Vanuit een persoonlijke gedrevenheid zochten ze de waarheid. En ze vonden een individuele waarheid, die door een kudde van ‘deskundigen’ genegeerd werd, omdat hij niet past in het grote systeem van de ‘waarheid’ waarop de meeste mensen zich noodgedwongen beroepen.

What Charles Glenn called “the myth of the common school” has produced a flawed cultural narrative about uniform schools: that only traditional public schools can produce democratic citizens and provide equal opportunity for all students. Berner examines international and domestic research that challenge this received narrative. She suggests that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) exams and the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA)’s international civic surveys indicate that uniform systems have no inherent academic or civic advantage. La terapia Multi-Being. Una prospettiva relazionale in psicoterapia. Ovvero come riunire finezza epistemologica, innovazione metodologica e grazia espositiva, riuscendo inoltre a far convergere con armonia le pratiche proprie delle psicoterapie dialogiche (Hermans), narrative (White), strategiche (Watzlawick) e orientate alla soluzione (de Shazer).

Gli autori che echeggiano nel testo sono numerosi e autorevoli. Da George H. Mead ad Alessandro Salvini, da Ludwig Wittgenstein a Michel Foucault, da William James a Gregory Bateson, da Mikhail Bakhtin a Rom Harré, da Fedor Dostoevskij a Luigi Pirandello (e potremmo continuare): i contributi dei maggiori protagonisti del pensiero post-moderno e post-strutturalista sono presenti al gran completo, nessuno viene dimenticato.

Lo scritto di Diego Romaioli si presenta, dal primo momento, come un ricco ventaglio di spunti per chi si occupa di psicoterapia, ma anche per altri operatori del cambiamento interessati ad approfondire le implicazioni della prospettiva relazionale nell’ambito della psicologia clinica e sociale.

Il contributo apre con una posizione di sfida rispetto alle tradizioni fondate sul cosiddetto ‘modello medico’: addomesticando questioni complesse, l’autore individua più di una criticità riguardante tale approccio, illustrando le diverse e spesso infelici conseguenze che il suo uso induce a realizzare. Tuttavia, una critica a tutto campo – per quanto impeccabile – difficilmente basta a se stessa. Molto spesso rimane un’alternativa fra le tante, meritevole di un successo di nicchia e faticosamente in grado di produrre alcunché di nuovo. Queste pagine hanno invece il pregio di essere una proposta, veemente e ponderata, sin dalle prime battute.

Sono infatti considerate le principali declinazioni operative che l’autore deriva dal serbatoio del costruzionismo sociale americano, ma anche dal più vicino interazionismo italiano. La dicotomia teoria/pratica si mostra un’antinomia di facciata, un artefatto della ragione che, se può risultare euristica in certi casi, può essere fuorviante quando gli esperti della psiche ne tracciano i contorni netti, immemori della loro opera di scissione. In altre parole, La terapia Multi-Being assume una valenza assai “pratica” laddove si mostra come dissertazione teorica e muove alla riflessione quando propone quei dispositivi “pratici” che solitamente vengono annoverati come tecniche e protocolli dagli studiosi. Ne sarebbe lieto Gregory Bateson che, verosimilmente, avrebbe accolto questo libro con entusiasmo, forte del suo monito secondo il quale non vi è niente di più pratico di una buona teoria.

I primi tre capitoli sono un trampolino di lancio per poter iniziare a condividere le premesse su cui si fondano le promettenti opzioni terapeutiche che seguono nel capitolo IV. Lo stile, insieme meticoloso e brillante, rende agevole la lettura anche a chi muove i primi passi, deciso ad osservare il mondo delle psicoterapie con nuovi occhi, ma è soprattutto il lettore specializzato e avvezzo a questo argomento che ne può cogliere e apprezzare le principali evoluzioni.

Facendo un passo indietro, già nella prefazione, Kenneth J. Gergen incuriosisce il lettore anticipando la svolta radicale rispetto alla “logica delle essenze”, all’ottica individualista – e al pensiero disgiuntivo, potremmo aggiungere – che pervade parte delle correnti più in voga fra psicologi e psichiatri. Romaioli è infatti abile nel rilanciare con la teoria dell’identità relazionale e col concetto di ‘multi-being’: letteralmente ‘esseri multipli’, quali saremmo in quanto animati da più voci che non sempre vivono in reciproca armonia.

L’autore, ancora insoddisfatto, ricorda a più riprese che anche tale costrutto è partorito da una coordinazione umana di origine sociale. È una nostra – riteniamo utile – invenzione, la supposizione che il disagio umano sia un prodotto degli intrecci di relazioni che abitiamo. È tuttavia un’invenzione costruzionista che riflette sui propri presupposti conoscitivi, una concettualizzazione che invita al dialogo esponendo le valide implicazioni pragmatiche di tale posizione. Implicazioni, per alcuni, preferibili a quelle dell’agire terapeutico tradizionale perché maggiormente euristiche da un punto di vista operativo, ma anche epistemologico e culturale. Immersi ne La terapia Multi-Being, l’autore ci mostrerà il come e il perché.

Nella seconda parte, quella più “pratica” dicevamo, vengono proposte molte tattiche note e meno note, alcune rivisitate, altre di fresco conio, le quali (lungi dal costituire un banale ricettario di formule) vengono introdotte come suscettibili del personale contributo del lettore. Questi, trovandosi alla ricerca di nuovi espedienti per interagire con la polivocità dell’altro, in un certo senso avrà la chance di partecipare a un dialogo con l’autore.

La prassi viene inquadrata secondo diversi livelli: quello dell’azione, della narrazione e della relazione. In questo modo la proposta di Romaioli si rende ancor più fruibile da esperti di diversa estrazione, aumentandone le opzioni di intervento professionale.

Il capitolo VI è infine la degna conclusione di un percorso che può destare giustificate ma anche scomode euforie: i rischi di una nuova reificazione sono seducenti e sempre dietro l’angolo e le annotazioni finali dell’autore aumentano ulteriormente la caratura dell’opera.

Qualcuno potrebbe essere interessato a intraprendere la via impervia di quel relativismo particolare, che relativizza l’assoluto e assolutizza il relativo. In cerca di mappe adeguate, possiamo dedicarci a questa coinvolgente lettura: giunto alla fine, il futuro lettore converrà che ne è indiscutibilmente valsa la pena.

Though his books have been acclaimed by both critics and non-critics alike, author Robert M. Pirsig has expressed much dissatisfaction over the inability of his readers to fully comprehend the philosophical system he develops in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values and Lila: An Inquiry into Morals, what Pirsig calls the Metaphysics of Quality. This is not to say, however, that his readers are completely to blame.

There are several reasons one may experience difficulty with Pirsig’s philosophy. For example, Pirsig’s decision to develop his philosophical system in novels has made it difficult to determine where story and philosophy start and end. In addition, many of the topics that Pirsig discusses in the development of his metaphysics of quality are massive in scope and complexity: axiology, cultural evolution, technology, and the history of philosophy just to name a few. Finally, Pirsig does not attempt to define his terms, his justification being that the axis around which his entire philosophical system revolves, Quality, cannot be defined at all.  Nevertheless, I do not believe that Pirsig’s philosophy is impenetrable.

In the following pages, I will argue that a significant amount of interpretive difficulty in parsing out Pirsig’s metaphysics of quality dissolves when analyzed through the lens of the philosophy of G. W. F. Hegel. This is because Pirsig’s metaphysics of quality bears resemblance to Hegel’s philosophical system in at least two fundamental ways. First, I will explain why we should expect that Hegel’s philosophy in general might be able to illuminate Pirsig’s  philosophical system. Then, I will analyze Hegel’s philosophy of mind and his account of madness. Next, I will briefly summarize Pirsig’s discussion of insanity and the role it plays in his novels. Finally, through a literary and philosophical analysis, I will show that Hegel’s account of madness helps illuminate the plot of Pirsig’s novels, his discussion of insanity, and, by extension, his metaphysics of quality.

Resumen: El presente artículo pretende evidenciar el conjunto de imbricacio-nes entre filosofía y literatura a partir de prácticas discursivas que tienen lugar en la literatura infantil y los discursos sobre el animal. De igual modo, se pre-tende señalar la manera en la que la razón Zoológica se complica en la escritu-ra literaria para devenir Zoográfica. Es decir, como a partir de la aparición del animal en la literatura se puede pensar el campo político como un territorio estético en donde acontecen encantamientos y desencantamientos para hacer posibles estrategias de impugnación o legitimación de ciertas prácticas éticas y estéticas.

Letter critiques media's credulous use of statistics, esp. the hyperbolic statements about the US being 'outeducated' and how this is leading to the demise of US leadership in the world.

You might notice that they actually used different data -- the PiSA results which had come out AFTER I wrote the letter and which make it seem, if not non-sensical, a little off.
At the last moment, the New Yorker  substituted  TIMSS and PIRLS scores that were released between the time I wrote the letter and the time they published.
So, while I say the US is in the middle, the figures they give put the US near the top. .

Not the worse thing that ever happened.  Just wish they had mentioned my book.

This essay applies a critical viewpoint to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in an attempt to establish Robert Pirsig as a serious postmodern philosopher. Though Pirsig was seldom approached by mainstream philosophers during the years immediately after his novel was published, I argue in this essay that it is in the interest of academic philosophy to take his approach to postmodern philosophy seriously.

ABSTRACT Schools are better at expressing social goals than at operationalizing those goals in a manner that might actually realize them. School reform efforts are better at changing the rhetorical commitment of schools to particular educational goals than at bringing the teaching and learning in schools in line with these goals. And historical studies of education are better at identifying the evolving language of educational goals than at detailing the impact of these goals on the core pedagogical relation between teacher and student. Thus the language of goals dominates education, educational reform, and historical research on education. In this paper, I explore the central elements of education’s language fetish, the historical and sociological roots of this condition, and its consequences for education and society. The focus will be on American education; but much of the argument resonates with education in other settings, since it tries to tell a story about the social role that education is asked to play in modern liberal democracies.

Nel saggio si cerca di delimitare e ampliare i confini della terapia familiare sistemica a partire dagli spunti offerti da Gregory Bateson. Non si tratta solo della teoria del doppio legame, ma c'è anche la questione della circolarità del controllo. Infine l'autore sottolinea, come ha già fatto in altri suoi contributi, l'importanza del concetto di "piano continuo d'intensità", che assimila il pensiero di Bateson a quello di Gilles Deleuze e Felix Guattari.

This chapter discusses Robert M. Pirsig’s novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974) from the perspective of Jacques Derrida’s exploration of various forms of movement. In particular, the notions of counter-movement and “via rupta” are used in order to focus on the different “paths”, journeys, or identity travels that Pirsig, together with his main character Phedrus, pursues in the iconic narrative. It is argued that the novel’s very construction and its focus on philosophy and on the notions of going against the grain are an example of a deliberate attempt to document a particular counterpath to passive material consumption. This is done through undermining and problematizing the notions of journeying and identity, which offers a somewhat subversive approach to travelling.

This manuscript expands on previous treatments of hegemony and social learning by looking at Amy Gutmann's work on education and the how to articulate principles on which educational institutions supportive of democracy may be developed. It also expands on the notion of problem articulation, focusing on how the method used to identify problems has ideological biases that often go unrecognized.

Este número especial de Instantes y Azares está dedicado a la problemática de los “relaciones peligrosas” (liaisons dangereuses) entre la filosofía y la literatura en la huella nietzscheana. Amantes condenadas al ocultamiento, sin embargo, su amor se hace visible en muchos trayectos del pensar. Imposible ocultar, entonces, ese amor y mutuo deseo que emerge cuando la pasión por el pensamiento y por la escritura los hace estallar y salir de los límites asignados por las disciplinas. Indisciplinado amor, que debe ser negado “públicamente” si se quiere hacer “carrera filosófica” en el ámbito institucional académico, que desconfía de la seducción “desviante” de la literatura, de las palabras encantadoras que no se preocupan por la “verdad” sino por los “modos” del decir, más que por “lo dicho”.
La editora de este número especial, Paula Fleisner, reconoce a Platón como el primer amante despechado que aísla a la filosofía de la literatura, y ella plantea el vínculo como “amor de chicas”. Tal vez la filosofía (que, según creo, se ha considerado siempre masculina, dominante y patriarcal en su gesto de pretender saber, traicionando la consigna socrática) haya creído poder ser, en este amor, la figura que le marca el rumbo a su partenaire, dejándole un lugar marginal, anexo y parasitario: el de la “ilustración” o “decoración” de los conceptos. Sin embargo, esa marginalidad y parasitismo han contaminado lo filosófico, y por ello la construcción de esos puentes seguros entre palabras y cosas (que Fleisner, siguiendo a Agamben, evoca) ha estado siempre en riesgo. El puente de la ontología estable entre palabras y cosas está, desde el inicio, dinamitado por la literatura. El amor de filosofía y literatura se consuma, entonces, en el estallido de los puentes, cuando la primera se asoma a la posibilidad de asumir el riesgo de no ser dueña de la verdad, cuando deja de erigir el dedo amenazante de la sabiduría y la moral, y se apresta a reconocerse indigente.

This one focuses on what we may yet call an allegory of the 'child' from the series of the metamorphoses of spirit. Such an allegory, I claim - is the key to reading his reaction against the Hegelianism that permeated the philosophical school's of his time, while also positing an alternative to the narratorial force of the dialectic which historicizes negation as exemplified by Hegel's greatest student, Karl Marx.

What follows is based on actual occurrences. Although much has been changed for rhetorical purposes, it must be regarded in its essence as fact. However, it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual on motorcycles, either. 1 I can see by my watch, without taking my hand from the left grip of the cycle, that it is eight-thirty in the morning. The wind, even at sixty miles an hour, is warm and humid. When it's this hot and muggy at eight-thirty, I'm wondering what it's going to be like in the afternoon. In the wind are pungent odors from the marshes by the road. We are in an area of the Central Plains filled with thousands of duck hunting sloughs, heading northwest from Minneapolis toward the Dakotas. This highway is an old concrete two-laner that hasn't had much traffic since a four-laner went in parallel to it several years ago. When we pass a marsh the air suddenly becomes cooler. Then, when we are past, it suddenly warms up again. I'm happy to be riding back into this country. It is a kind of nowhere, famous for nothing at all and has an appeal because of just that. Tensions disappear along old roads like this. We bump along the beat-up concrete between the cattails and stretches of meadow and then more cattails and marsh grass. Here and there is a stretch of open water and if you look closely you can see wild ducks at the edge of the cattails. And turtles.—There's a red-winged blackbird.

This article discusses the basic types of concepts of quality occurring in Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values. These terms refer to the different conceptual domains, creating diversified types of rhetoric. All kinds of rhetoric refer to the discovery and awakening of individuality. The quality of education at university or on a motorbike must extend to all possible levels of the Great Chain of Being, it can not only be addressed with abstractedness. Conceptual diversification means diversifying rhetoric and style, which possibly corresponds to different levels of quality for Pirsig. In this sense, his proposals of a metaphysics of quality is part of a current dispute about the crisis within the humanities and the need to give it meaning, practicality and socially responsible utility. A metaphysics of quality uses the rhetoric of conceptual schemata which include: road, inclusion and container.

This article is crafted through three scenes, through which the author tries to imagine quality as something that is third space, semiotic, plasticity, eternal, and simultaneously something solid and obviously good here and now, through a Spinozian/Deluzian/Braitottian joy/you/me. The author rhizomatically tries to lay everything out on a plane of exteriority – on a single page, the same sheet: lived events,

Ciascun individuo, quindi, è epistemologo più o meno ingenuo che compie operazioni e azioni atte a comprendere il mondo che lo circonda e se stesso. Questo processo non è un’operazione  individuale  e  limitata  all’interno  della  testa  di  ciascun  individuo,  ma  ha un carattere sociale e avviene all’interno di una cultura, intesa come spazio di scambio (Geertz, 1995) per la costruzione di significati condivisi, contestati e negoziati riguardo alla  realtà  (Benhabib,  2002).  Non  ci  sono  quindi “teorie”  su  sé  stessi  e  sul  mondo  che
sono  indipendenti  dalle  relazioni,  in  quanto  gli  individui costruiscono  le  proprie  teorie attraverso  il  linguaggio,  sulla  base  dei  rapporti  sociali  e  familiari,  in  un  contesto  di condivisione  della  semantica  e  delle  regole  culturalmente  determinate  e  messe  in comune.
L’esperienza è quindi acquisita e spiegata a partire dal rapporto attivo con la cultura in cui  siamo  inseriti.  Come  hanno  messo  in  evidenza  anche  le  più  attuali  teorie neurofisiologiche (Gallese,  2003),  non  è  possibile  una  conoscenza  basata  unicamente sulla  percezione.  Esiste  dunque  una  relazione  dialettica  tra  azione  e  sistemi  di significato:  l’azione  in  un  contesto  produce  un  particolare  modo  di  vedere  il  mondo  e questo  a  sua  volta  influenzerà  il  modo  di  agire  e  reagire  in  esso  (Maturana,  Varela, 1984).

A partire da queste considerazioni iniziali, questo elaborato vuole trattare sia dal punto di vista del dibattito teorico che attraverso la discussione di alcune esperienze cliniche, la dimensione del rapporto con la cultura e l’alterità culturale in psicoterapia. Quando al terapeuta  si  presentano  fenomeni  come  l’emigrazione  e  il  vissuto  di  sradicamento  che spesso si accompagna, appare un fenomeno complesso che richiede un cambiamento nel pensiero e nell’azione del terapeuta (Ancora, 2010).  Accogliere pienamente il concetto di  cultura  è  infatti  un’operazione  che  sfida  e  rivolta  ciò  che  gli orientamenti psicoterapeutici considerano come universale, indicando che le teorie su come funziona l’individuo  o  la  famiglia,  su  come  si  sviluppano  i  problemi  e  su  come  avviene  il cambiamento costituiscono “idee locali” (Fancher, 1995).
L’approccio sistemico, dal canto suo, sin dalle prime ricerche e studi accademici non ha mancato  di  sottolineare  l’importanza  del  contesto  socioculturale  nella  comprensione delle famiglie svantaggiate (Minuchin et al., 1967; Sluzki, 1979). 
Tuttavia,  pur  essendoci  tutti  i  presupposti  teorici  ed epistemologici  per  un  pensiero  e una  pratica  specifica  sul  tema  dell’incontro  terapeutico  con  l’alterità  culturale,  nonché pubblicazioni  in  questo  senso  molto  stimolanti (Ancora,  1997),  forse  non  si  è  mai pervenuti  a  delineare una  possibile  declinazione  specifica  e  sistematizzazione
dell’approccio  sistemico  in  questo  campo.  In  questo elaborato  ci  si  propone  di rintracciare ed elaborare alcuni elementi per questa possibile sistematizzazione.

L'interesse crescente per la corporeità mostrato da alcuni recenti approcci psicoterapeutici sembra accompagnarsi ad un ridimensionamento dell'importanza del linguaggio verbale e della conversazione nel processo terapeutico, fino ad arrivare a fare del linguaggio del corpo lo strumento privilegiato per la comprensione del sistema di significati personali del cliente. La psicoterapia dei costrutti personali – e la psicoterapia costruttivista ermeneutica che ne rappresenta uno sviluppo che ne esalta le affinità con la fenomenologia e con la teoria dell'autopoiesi – adotta una concezione costruttivista della
conoscenza che permette di trascendere i numerosi dualismi che caratterizzano molte psicologie e psicoterapie e, tra questi, anche il dualismo tra un canale esplicito ed uno implicito di comunicazione. Il presente contributo intende sostenere la tesi del ruolo ontologico del linguaggio nella creazione dei mondi personali, e mostrare, anche attraverso la sintesi di una conversazione psicoterapeutica, il lavoro fatto con le parole in
un percorso di psicoterapia costruttivista ermeneutica volto a favorire una comprensione di sé e l'apertura di nuovi orizzonti esperienziali nel cliente.

I examine this question through the subquestions of if certain human rights only apply in certain eras or to certain groups of people.  I critically assess several cultural relativist arguments, using an Islamic conception of human rights as my test case.

Most of the examined groups agree that some human rights are limited to the modern era.  Potentially all agree that vulnerable groups like children are excluded from some rights like participating in government. 

I summarize the Metaphysics of Quality by Robert Pirsig, which claims universality and provides a specific basis for the moral force of human rights.  It provides a moral grounding for human rights that is universal in its application.

Letter critiques media's credulous use of statistics, esp. the hyperbolic statements
about the US being 'outeducated' and how this is leading to
the demise of US leadership in the world.

New Yorker editors, God bless them, sort of  botched the edit.

You might notice that they actually used different data -- the PiSA results which had come out AFTER I wrote the letter and which make it seem, if not non-sensical, a little off.
At the last moment, the New Yorker  substituted  TIMSS and PIRLS scores that were released between the time I wrote the letter and the time they published.
So, while I say the US is in the middle, the figures they give put the US near the top. .

Not the worse thing that ever happened.  Just wish they had mentioned my book.
It was coming out that week and it really could have used the attention.

Beginning with Amy Gutmann's theory of Democratic Education, the paper explores contemporary education reform in the US by employing a heuristic conceit:  contemporary efforts at reforming education  in the US –on which there is much bipartisan consensus-- seem determined to be systematic in their rejection of Gutmann's conclusions. 
The paper recounts Gutmann's theory and looks at a variety of issues, but especially standards-based reform, charter schools, value-added measurements and the decline of creativity among school-age children in the US.  It concludes by looking at Robert Pirsig, John Dewey and John Adam for guidance and insight.
