Radical hermeneutics

Suffering is one of the affective dominants in the poetry of Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, in which many descriptions of painful states can be found. This article aims to analyse the methods of textually representing suffering in his works. In the interpretation of maladic states, the author uses the concept from affect studies (e.g. Brian Massumi), somatopoetics (e.g. Anna Łebkowska), and studies on senses. The paper analyses relations between intensive suffering and the body (microanalysis of internal reactions – as heart, blood and observations of the suffering body – convulsions), the hapticity of suffering, audiosphere as a space for the expression of the suffering (the scream).

The Question of Laughter: Reflections on Różewicz The subject of the article is the problem of laughter and the related phenomena in the work of Tadeusz Różewicz. The problem is considered in a broad theoretical context. The aim of the article is to develop a concept in which two pictures of Różewicz will be reconciled: the poet of trauma as well as the satirist and the comedy writer.

Żyjemy w epoce niestabilności planetarnej. Kryzys klimatyczny skutecznie zawładnął zachodnią wyobraźnią społeczną. Poruszenie stanem świata udziela się nadspodziewanie szeroko już nie tylko na gruncie nauk, ale także wewnątrz systemów religijnych, dla których natura oraz jej problemy nie mogły liczyć dotąd na szczególne zatroskanie. Być może wobec marazmu antropocenu i licznych kryzysów ekologicznych nauka i religia, zgodziwszy się na nieusuwalną nieprzystawalność i niekonsensualność, mimo wszelkich wzajemnych uprzedzeń byłyby w stanie długotrwale myśleć i działać dla utopii dobra wspólnego. Zakładam, że wzajemne przenikanie się dwóch odrębnych dotąd porządków wyobraźni społecznej „wiedzy” i „wiary” stanowi swego rodzaju symptomtakiej zmiany. Argumentując na rzecz zasadności takiego założenia, to, w jaki sposób obecna sytuacja ekologiczna wpływa na wzajemne hybrydyzowanie języka nauki i języka religii, przedstawiam na dwóch przykładach: argumentu ekoteologicznego Bruno Latoura i radykalnej ekologicznej hermeneutyki biblijnej.

This article deals with radical hermeneutics in Vladimir Makanin’s micro-novel The Loss. The article presents the position that John D. Caputo’s flow is fundamental to Makanin’s hermeneutics. The author refers to Vladimir Ivancov’s research and debates with Anna Skotnicka and Anna Stankevich

Różewicz. Necrographies The article deals with the phenomenon of an insistent and recurring interrelation between the living and the dead in Tadeusz Różewicz’s works. This motif – strictly connected with the generational and individual trauma of war experiences – manifests itself not only in the symbolic forms of memoirs and recollections, but also through the visions of physical, all-too-real presence of profaned, unburied dead bodies, taking revenge on the survivor tormented by ambivalent feelings of guilt and shame. All this leads to the emergence of the spectral ‘un-dead’ in Różewicz’s poetry. The analysis of this phantasmatic fi gure in the complementary – anthropological and poetological – perspectives becomes the main subject of the article

Narasi mengenai terorisme masih didominasi oleh entitas yang memiliki kekuatan, umumnya oleh negara. Sikap nasionalisme, yang selama ini juga digaungkan dan diusung oleh negara, ternyata memiliki pengaruh dalam aksi terorisme. Istilah balkanisasi, yang bersumber dari perpecahan negara-bangsa di Semenanjung Balkan, juga digunakan sebagai model untuk menanamkan nasionalisme.   This article aims to reveal the deconstruction meaning of the ideal women concept in film Pengabdi Setan through the characters of Mother and Grandmother. Jacques Derrida's concept is used in this study to see how text can be interpreted not only in a single meaning but also another meaning, as a main characteristic of deconstruction is to reveal the meanings that are marginalized, ignored, and hidden. We use deconstruction reading methodology to reveal the hidden meanings in the film Pengabdi Setan (2017). By deconstructing a concept of women which presented by mother and grandmother figures, we found several results were obtained such as the concept of ideal women that admitted in our society still shackles women so that if a woman does not conform to the ideal concept prevailing in society, then what will happen is a catastrophe. The article is an interpretation of the traditional figure of the hermeneutic circle made from the perspective of John D. Caputo's radical hermeneutics. It begins with a recapitulation of the most important modern positions on the hermeneutic circle, which postmodern hermeneutics radicaliz-es, noting the impossibility of its closure or fulfillment. Movement in the postmodern hermeneutic circle takes place not between the parts and the whole, but only between the different parts. Thus, one might say that this circle is twisted, and this has a dual meaning. It evokes Jacques Derrida's interpretation of a phrase from Hamlet, "time is out of joint", but it also plays with the meaning of the twist, which can be understood as a Verwindung: the impossibility of the transgression beyond modern hermeneutics.

The starting point for consideration is to put the Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy into question whether the status of “absolute Otherness” may also belong to the Other other than man. On the basis of the thought of Levinas it receives a negative response and it is because of his involvement in the so-called anthropological machine (which
he shares with Martin Heidegger and some other critics of metaphysics). But it is, however, possible to open the (broadly defined) phenomenological ethical thought drew on the achievements of Levinas to the question of the animal. This attempt might be centered around the proposals of Jacques Derrida, the author of the essay The Animal That Therefore I Am (More To Follow), where he spoke about the singularity of each animal, the problematic status of border between man and animal,and the being-with animals as a full-fledged modality of being. This is a provocative thought which asks us about our attitude to such issues as “responsibility” and “responsiveness”, “carno-phallogocentrism”, or the status of non-human animals. Derrida’s thought is here very close to some kind of phenomenological language, but it is rather the phenomenology of the otherness than the phenomenology of intentional subject. The same phenomenology that we find in Bernhard Waldenfels’s or John D. Caputo’s writing.

Książka oferuje pierwsze w polskich badaniach literackich systematyczne wprowadzenie do hermeneutyki radykalnej Johna D. Caputo. Prace amerykańskiego hermeneuty były dotąd prezentowane w polskiej humanistyce głównie przez filozofów i kulturoznawców, brakowało jednak ujęcia, które aplikowałoby język i narzędzia hermeneutyki radykalnej na grunt literaturoznawstwa. Patryk Szaj stara się nadrobić ten brak, proponując autorską interpretację myśli Caputo, oscylującą wokół imperatywu „pozostania wiernym pierwotnej trudności życia”, wydobycia hermeneutycznych aspektów dekonstrukcji Jacques’a Derridy oraz wpisania hermeneutyki radykalnej w dziedzictwo dotychczasowej, nowoczesnej filozofii hermeneutycznej, głównie Martina Heideggera i Hansa-Georga Gadamera, z którymi łączy Caputo ambiwalentny, aprobatywno-negujący stosunek, nakazujący traktować hermeneutykę radykalną w kategoriach Verwindung – „przebolewania”, krytycznego dystansu, permanentnego „żegnania się” z hermeneutyką nowoczesną, która jednak pozostaje niezbędnym, niezbywalnym punktem odniesienia. Z tych powodów hermeneutyce radykalnej metaforycznie zostaje przypisana struktura contradictio in adiecto: w przeciwieństwie do tradycyjnego rozumienia hermeneutyki jako „wykładania”, „objaśniania”, „przekazywania” podkreśla ona swoiście pojętą „niewykładalność”, „nieobjaśnialność”, „nieprzekazywalność”, zaś jej „radykalizm” oznacza, wbrew łacińskiej etymologii (radicitus – zakorzeniony), brak dostępu do źródeł, fundamentów, podstaw.
Przełożenie hermeneutyki radykalnej na grunt literaturoznawstwa polega przede wszystkim na uczynieniu z niej języka interpretacji twórczości pisarzy, których cechuje szczególna uczciwość intelektualna i egzystencjalna, nakazująca im mierzyć się z „trudnością życia” bez uciekania się do złudnych pocieszeń czy uproszczeń, warunkująca krytykę metafizyki, a także implikująca szczególne nastawienie etyczne, pokrewne Caputowskiej „poetyce zobowiązania”. Tak pojętą postawę danych pisarzy czy bohaterów literackich uznać można za hermeneutykę radykalną sensu largo – swoisty dyskurs bliski hermeneutyce Caputo, jednak rozwijany niezależnie od niej; cechujący się podobieństwem diagnoz, ale dochodzący do nich za pomocą odmiennych metod. Z tej perspektywy autor interpretuje projekty poetyckie Aleksandra Wata, Tadeusza Różewicza i Stanisława Barańczaka.



The book offers the first systematic introduction to John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics in Polish literary studies. Works of American hermeneut have so far been presented in Polish humanities mainly by philosophers and culture experts, however, there was a lack of approach that would apply the language and tools of radical hermeneutics to the ground of literary studies. Patryk Szaj tries to make up for this lack by proposing an authorial interpretation of Caputo’s thought, which oscillate around the imperative of “sticking with the original difficulty of life”, drawing the hermeneutic aspects of Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction, and inscribing radical hermeneutics into the heritage of current, modern hermeneutic philosophy, mainly of Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer ones, with whom Caputo is connected by an ambivalent, approving-negating attitude, requiring to treat radical hermeneutics in the categories of Verwindung – “getting over”, critical distance, permanent “goodbye” with modern hermeneutics, which, however, remains a necessary, inalienable point of reference. For these reasons, a structure of contradictio in adiecto is metaphorically attributed to radical hermeneutics: in contrast to the traditional explaining hermeneutics as “displaying”, “explaining”, “transferring”, it emphasizes specifically conceived “undisplayability”, “inexplainability”, “intransferability”, and its “radicalism” means, contrary to Latin etymology (radicitus – rooted), that it lacks access to origins, foundations, principles.
Translating radical hermeneutics into the field of literary studies is primarily conceived as making it a tool for interpreting works of writers who are characterized by special intellectual and existential honesty, ordering them to face with the “difficulty of life” without resorting to illusory consolations or simplifications, conditioning the criticism of metaphysics, as well as implying a particular ethical attitude related to Caputo’s “poetics of obligation”. Such a disposition of writers or literary heroes can be considered as radical hermeneutics in the broad sense – a specific discourse close to Caputo’s hermeneutics, but developed independently of it; characterized by the similarity of diagnoses, but establishing them by means of different methods. From this perspective, the author interprets the poetic projects of Aleksander Wat, Tadeusz Różewicz and Stanisław Barańczak.

Collating Tadeusz Różewicz’s poetry with Jacques Derrida’s critique of logocentrism and John D. Caputo’s so­‍‑called poetics of obligation, this article ponders upon the ethical relation to non­‍‑human animals – particularly livestock – in the aforementioned literary project. Although Różewicz’s volumes published early after the end of the war seem to drift towards negative anthropology, they tend to benefit from more modern interpretative codes, for instance Giorgio Agamben’s anthropological machine or Caputo’s poetics of obligation. With regard to the means of the latter one, it is argued that Różewicz’s poetry endeavours to rethink animal as the absolute Other, contributing to the ethical relation which has been previously restricted entirely to Human­‍‑Other. Such poems as "Walentynki", "Świniobicie", "Ucieczka świnek dwóch (z  obozu zagłady – rzeźni)", "Buty i wiersze" or "Unde malum?" confirm Różewicz’s sensitivity to animal suffering. Moreover, they often anticipate the ethical and philosophical debates upon the human/animal dyad, and their practical political and economic implications.

Autor podejmuje próbę wpisania poezji Tadeusza Różewicza w kontekst hermeneutyki radykalnej Johna D. Caputo. Artykuł rozpoczyna interpretacja problematyki fragmentu w dziele Różewicza wyciągająca jej radykalnohermeneutyczne implikacje, do których należą m.in. przekonanie o rozpadzie metafizycznej wykładni świata, sprzeciw wobec jakichkolwiek ujęć całościowych, bycie poddanym „upływowi” (flux). Poezja Różewicza realizuje podstawowy imperatyw hermeneutyki Caputo, aby przywrócić życiu jego pierwotną trudność: cechuje ją swoista „uczciwość” polegająca na wytrwaniu w stanie niepewności, chwiejności i płynności, nieneutralizowaniu ich za pomocą metafizycznych podpórek służących zabezpieczeniu gry znaczeń i upewnieniu podmiotu. Z tej perspektywy odczytane zostają m.in. wiersze Różewicza podejmujące problem fragmentu i całości, nihilizmu jako specyficznej diagnozy kulturowej, niemożności jednoznacznej rekonstrukcji sensu. W artykule opisane jest także „radykalne koło hermeneutyczne” poezji Różewicza, które okazuje się kołem zwichniętym – brak mu bowiem perspektywy całościowej, porusza się jedynie od fragmentu do fragmentu. Na koniec wydobyte zostają pozytywne implikacje postawy Różewicza, skupione wokół zagadnień poetyckich, ontologicznych i etycznych.

The author of the article attempts to set Tadeusz Różewicz’s poetry into the context of John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics. The paper opens with an interpretation of problems of Różewicz’s fragmentary work which reveals its radical hermeneutic implications that include e.g. conviction about the collapse of metaphysical interpretation of the world, objection to any complete encompassment, being subject to flux. Różewicz’s poetry realises Caputo’s hermeneutics basic imperative “restoring life to its original difficulty”; the poetry is characterised by peculiar “honesty” consisting in retaining the state of uncertainty, instability and liquidity, and non-neutralising them with metaphysical support the aim of which is protecting the play of meanings and reassuring the subject. That perspective allows to interpret, inter alia, Różewicz’s poems touching upon the problem of part and whole, nihilism as a peculiar cultural diagnosis, and impossibility of unambiguous sense reconstruction. The article also describes Różewicz’s poetry ”radical hermeneutic circle” which proves to be a crooked circle since it lacks in completeness and moves only from a fragment to a fragment. Ultimately, the paper exploits positive implications of Różewicz’s stance, focusing on poetical, ontological and ethical problems.

Artykuł podejmuje namysł nad jednym z najważniejszych tematów powojennej twórczości Aleksandra Wata – cierpieniem. Zostaje ono wpisane w kontekst hermeneutyki radykalnej Johna D. Caputo, który w swej filozofii ciała dokonuje rozróżnienia na body (ciało zdrowe) i flesh (ciało cierpiące). Podmiot Wata jest traktowany przez autora artykułu jako flesh, stawiające przed czytelnikiem – body – wyzwanie moralne. Interpretacja organizuje się wokół problemu „dotkliwości” tekstów Wata – poruszających, wywołujących zobowiązanie etyczne (jak odpowiedzialnie odpowiedzieć na cierpienie?), a przy tym skrajnie wieloznacznych, sensotwórczych, heterogenicznych (jak pozostać uczciwym wobec ich skomplikowania?). W toku interpretacji prześledzony zostaje fenomen konania, które jawi się jako nierozstrzygalność strukturyzująca całą powojenną poezję Wata i warunkująca jej aporetyczny charakter.


The article takes up a thought over one of the most vital theme of Aleksander Wat’s post-war creativity, namely suffering. The notion is set into the context of radical hermeneutics of John D. Caputo who in his philosophy distinguishes between body (healthy body) and flesh (a suffering one). Wat’s subject is seen by the author as flesh which issues a moral challenge to body – the reader. Interpretation is organised around “acuteness” of Wat’s texts – moving ones, calling for ethical commitment (how to responsibly respond to suffering?), and at the same time radically ambiguous, sense-forming, heterogeneous (how to remain fair against their complexity?). In the course of interpretation the phenomenon of dying is scrutinised, and it is viewed as an insolvability that structures Wat’s entire post-war poetry and that conditions its aporetic nature.

Artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do całej serii publikacji, wydrukowanych w numerze 5/2007 czasopisma "Pomiary - Automatyka - Kontrola", będących pokłosiem ogólnopolskiej konferencji naukowej odbywającej pod hasłem: "Informatyka - sztuka czy rzemiosło". Autor zdecydowanie opowiada się za poglądem, że informatykę można rozważać jako rodzaj sztuki, a dodatkowo broni jej jedności. Artykuł dowodzi jedności informatyki, niepotrzebnie wewnętrznie dzielonej na obszary. Przytaczane są argumenty, że obszary te w istocie składają się na jedną dziedzinę, mającą jednak - zgodnie z tytułem artykułu - wiele barw.

The present investigation employs a hermeneutical approach to interpret repetition as a technology of the numinous in performance. It achieves this by bringing together, under the overarching theoretical umbrella of radical hermeneutics conceived by John Caputo, Michael Foucault’s notion of ‘technologies of the self’ and Rudolph Otto’s concept of ‘numinous experience’. This methodological perspective offers an innovative framework of analysis to be applied to the performance The Artist is Present (2010) by Marina Abramović. The chapter shows how religiosity and secularity were closely intertwined in the theatrical and performative dynamics that this performance offered to its audience and examines how repetition was involved in these processes. The three elements of space, presence and action are closely analyzed to reveal how repetition informed a complex theatrical apparatus, which became for many spectators/participants the repository of powerfully personal, affective, religious sentiments.

ABSTRACT:
When it comes to documenting participatory performance, what ethical concerns do performance artists face? How can we consider consent in situations like this? In part one, I engage Nicolas Ridout’s figure of the mis-spectator, to examine the ethics of documentation using Marina Abramović’s The Artist is Present as a case study. Here, the participant-body is conscription as an object—a product—that performs as an extension of the artist’s body. The notion of ‘static consent’ that undergirds archival logic, upon which the art market rests, is unethical and I propose, instead, that an emphasis on a dialogical culture of care could allow for more ethical forms of consent. In Part Two, I examine an instance in which my own documentation of a naked performance art piece was appropriated unconsensually to pornography websites. Examining the complicated relations of power at play, I ask how we might do things differently.
